How Air Traffic Control Works

How Air Traffic Control Works

video description

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) oversees the enormously complex Air Traffic Control system in the United States. Thanks to the FAA, this video goes behind the scenes at Air Traffic Control to places never before seen by a YouTube Channel in order to understand How Air Traffic Control works! The airspace around the busiest airport in the world seemed like a good place to explore How Air Traffic Control Works, so thats exactly where we went: Atlanta, Georgia. There, like most of the rest of the world, Air Traffic Controllers manage the airspace. As important as an Air Traffic Control Tower is, theres a lot more to How Air Traffic Control Works than just that. In this video, well explore the whole system in order to understand how Air Traffic Control Works

Awesome vid. Just to clarify the sequence a bit --
Ground - handles pushback from the gate and taxi to the runway.
Tower - gives permission to enter the runway and clearance to takeoff.
Departure (TRACON) - handles the aircraft as it climbs away from the airport.
Center - handles the aircraft at high altitude as it cruises towards its destination.
Approach (TRACON) - handles the aircraft as it descends towards its destination.
Tower - handles the aircraft in the landing pattern and gives permission to land.
Ground - directs the aircraft from the runway to the gate.
Sounds complex. Is complex. But works very well most of the time.

Just caught your video. Good overview of ATC. Really great to see Brian Kellerman again. I worked with him when he left the USAF at KFOK over 20 years ago. I am still in ATC working in the Federal Contract Program. Let me know if you would like to know more about this part of the ATC as the program runs over 300 control towers in the USA including Hawaii, Guam, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. We are a huge part of the National Airspace System. Tell Brian I said hi and hope to hear more soon.

Oh yes absolutely go back for a deeper dive into it! We are so thankful to the FAA for them letting you in so we can see the important job these Men and women do for us so we can go on our vacations and do our business day to day! Thank you Torrance and Brian I think it was the little guy that sent the invitation to you to come! They do such an unbelievable job at Atlanta Airport! I have flown in and out a few times over the last few years! I just now saw this video!

Man, the most highly trained, qualified, competent, and proficient people in the country who keep millions and millions of people safe every year, all whittled down to an 11 minute vid. These people are second only to the two guys (gals) up front in the jet who keep the pointy end forward. Good stuff.

This might sound weird coming from a 13 year old, but I would really like to learn more about Air Traffic Control as a future career, and I would love if you could go into each facilities and describe them in your videos, like either certain things that set them aside from the other ATC facilities.

You should go back and get the perspective from the maintenance side of the house! We maintain the communication and Navigation systems, Radar, Weather, ILS, etc.
Really cool how the systems work together! Thanks for posting this video! People ask me what I do and it's hard to explain.

This is great only request to u is if u can show the latest developments in Air Traffic Control as due to Technological advancement in USA I think there will be some changes in the System, also parallely if u can make Jeff about air safety it will capture those who r frequent flyers!

I just got hired as an ATC Specialist and heading to Oak City in a few weeks! Thank you for the behind the scenes and different job functions! Looking forward to all the training! I'm asking this before looking but do you have any videos on ATC training? Have a good day!

i might be late to the party but this is so cool to see, being from ATL and flying out of this airport when I need to, sometimes you dont realize how much work is going on up there. Also im curious where all the ORD people again g they are busier than ATL

I love how 5: 05 he mentions that TRACON is the last person a pilot talks to before landing. Then the Tower guy gets interviewed and mentions that TRACON hands pilot over to Tower to handle the final approach before landing. lol

Enjoyed watching your Video today. I think Ive been thru ATL. Can you prepare a video on what passengers can do to make sure luggage is routed properly and what happens to lost luggage b4 it gets to a public auction.
reply

At the beginning of the video one of you said tracon or whatever direct traffic from ground to 12k feet but at the 4: 55 mark of the video you said to they handle traffic from surface to 14k ft. Which is it.

I could never be an ATC, seems like one of the most stressful jobs you could have with hundreds of lives in your hands on a daily basis. No thanks. My hats off to them though for the ones who can do it.

Another awesome video! I remember touring Oakland Center in Fremont back in 89. All the controllers were very professional with explaining the various aspects of their job. ARTCCs are very interesting places.

I literally thought this was like a peon occupation. I had no Idea you had to go to college for this. These people in real life have 0 professionalism. It's literally like no one holds them accountable.

Jeb - This is the first video I ever gave a thumbs up to. Great job getting the permissions to make this video. As a 'Rail Traffic Controller, I'd love to see a video going deeper into this.

A question i have had is it allowed to have a scanner as a passenger to listen to radio comms between cockpit and traffic control while on board. Of course listening to it with headphones only.
reply

Jeb, I went to Aviation High School in New York City and my teachers used to try and explain this process. In 10 minutes, you condensed the 4 years they tried to explain this to us. Thank you!

how do they coordinate planes taking off and landing back to back non stop? i live in front of MIA and sometimes within a period of 10 minutes, i swear 20 planes take off and land

I'm currently a high school senior wishing to earn a B. S. in Air Traffic Management at Embry-Riddle. This video increases my excitement for the profession!

Awesome Vid! Definitely want more from ATC. I think this is a great way to show the world How It All Works and tone down the astigmatism and fears of Flying!
reply

Its not all the time the average person gets to see the ins and outs of the complex ATC system. So, thank you for this video and, please, keep them coming.
reply

Im so amazed and THRILLED that you got access to the tower! Im so happy for you and thank you for doing this video! By far, its been my favorite so far!
reply

First time seeing what an en route center looks like, Ill be going to one myself in several months. Thanks for the video, it was shared by an ATC

Jeb. you should do a day at the life of an air traffic controller video of NY, Chicago, Atlanta. you name the airport, it would be fantastic!
