JB, you should definitely whisk over and down to Mauritius I did so at Christmas 2019, and chose Emirates out of JFK, natch. Its my favorite in business, and a courtesy stopover in Dubai always delights. But with the connection via ATL from/to BHM, it was a friendly little 45 hours aloft. At least I had four flights upstairs on the A380 in business with the lie-flat seats and onboard cocktail lounges. I suffered through an SAA A340 from Dulles to Johannesbug in 2013 with a stop in Dakar and an add-on B737 continuing to Cape Town, all in the back end, sadly. But I took Kenyan onward to Nairobi then Emirates home the rest of the way to salvage. I did make the acquaintances of a couple of really nice SAA flight attendants on the outbound, Noland and his bride, and I wish them well. SAAs demise is a Huge blow. One last thing: even being an A350, that aircraft is kitted out awfully, looks horribly bland, and the food is presented so unattractively. What do/did you pay for? Id have chosen other alternatives, from Lufthansa via Frankfurt, to AirFrances lie flat business modules via CDG to, my default anything, Emirates business. But your attitude is always commendable. My dad would admire that. Cheers!

Sadly, SAA did indeed cease operations in mid-2020, but it was bailed out with additional funding in Jan 2021. The latest information I read was that operations will resume in late March 2021, but it may not be the kind of airline that it once was.
I flew on SAA between the US and SA about 18 years ago in premium class; it was the best in-flight experience of my life. SAA seems to have stepped up the experience with refurbished cabins, but became a victim of circumstances.
Update, July 2021. The airline was sold in mid-2021 to a private company who will be majority stakeholder. Operations may resume in Sept/Octjust in time for Spring/Summer in South Africa.

It's time for an update on South African Airways. Caution, it's long!
The airline actually survived! In May 2020 the airline was very close to getting liquidated, and it had returned all of its leased aircraft (including all their Airbus A350's. However two months later a restructuring plan that would prevent liquidation was accepted. The south African government bailed out the airline in October. In June 2021 the airline got new investors, and on September, the airline finally resumed flights! The airline still has a lot to go through though, such as its fleet, resuming international flights, etc. But hey! It's back, and that's what matters.

The Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (or, mini-budget) was met with a somewhat muted response. The question on everyones lips is, Do we really need an airline? This in reference to the R10. 5 billion bail-out of SAA. The money has been drawn from budget cuts to 41 departments, including police, justice, education and transport.
Mboweni says this is no bail out but rather that it will bankroll the business rescue of SAA. Weve heard it all before and if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, looks like a duck, it must be a duck, right? So slater the duck

Once I was sitting on a bench in a nice park on a sunny morning here in a city in Poland eating my breakfast and this lady came along, sat next to me and we started chatting. She told me she has been living in SA for the last like 20 years and at one point looked around and asked me: is it safe here? First I didnt understand what the heck she meant but when I did I decided I never ever want to live in nor visit South Africa.

Hey Jeb, dont know if you are gonna read this comment, but saa since the beginning of the year has done routes from Johannesburg to Durban, to get money up. They have ordered a few a320s to hopefully get back into domestic flying, through Cape Town to Johannesburg routes. So, according to saa, they should be flying internationally soon. Maybe an update video 2 years later?

Flew this in 2017 in economy on the A340-600 with 33 legroom. Great service. Sad they seem to be in liquidation. Great crew too. Great food also but entertainment did not work both ways LOL. Mauritius is nice but I prefer the Caribbean. Ocean was cold. Same for Seychelles. Was told Nosey Be is great in Madagascar. You can fly on Air Link.

I never will forget my flight from Jberg to the USA with a stop in Dakar. I think our flight time with the layover was 21 hours From there I had to fly into Seattle. Thankfully, I was in business class and we had lay flat seats. It took about a week for my body to feel back to normal after that flight

I have to be honest and say that I am not a Patriotic South African at all. Having said though, I am very very sad to see this airline make it's last bow. SAA offered the best food, seats and service IMH. Onto KLM/Air France/BA etc we go.

I admire your ability to keep a positive attitude when faced with a delay like that Jeb. I would be going crazy if they were closing the airport and I had to sit and wait without knowing when the plane will be airworthy again.

I took this flight in February 2020. As of today (April 2020, there are rumors that SAA may not survive. There are other rumors that the airline will reorganize as a new national airline. What do you think will happen?

I flew this same flight a few years back on an A340. I was happy with the service. But I flew economy class. Ugh. I am six foot one and about 250 lbs. I felt like a sardine in a can.

In the apartheid years, South African used to fly the same route with a stopover on the Cape Verde islands, as the 747s did not allow for such a distance to be operated nonstop.

Sad that the once flagship carrier of the whole of Africa is bust thanks to corruption cadre deployment and mismanagement by a racist South African government.
