My brother-in-law and i rode the Coast Starlight from Seattle to San Jose a few years ago. We took a roomette and it was great. During the day, we could sit face-to-face and enjoy the scenery while drinking a glass of wine and solving the problems of the world. The huge picture window was excellent. The most amazing thing was how quiet the train was. We could carry on a normal conversation while blasting across the landscape. While we were away at dinner, our car attendant converted the two seats to a lower bunk, lowered the upper bunk from the ceiling, and made up the beds. I took the upper and we both slept very well. BTW, our car attendant was a 30-something lady and she was wonderful. In addition to keeping us fed and caffeinated, she answered all our questions about Amtrak operations and generally made us just want to hang out with her. I would love to take another Amtrak trip.

Coach seats are cheap because they are The Worst! There's at least one person (me) who snores! I have seen passengers sleeping in positions I thought were anatomically impossible. AMTRAK employees don't have time for coddling rude people; they will get put off the train at the next station, especially in the middle of the night. You will get a headache trying to read on a moving train. Double check the bathroom door; the door will fly open without warning on a moving train. Get off the train during stops, next stop could be hours away. Clean up after yourself because that tells everyone you are not that guy. AMTRAK is a test of your endurance and the experience will break the weak. Don't be in a hurry; delays of 24 hours or more is not uncommon. Just Grin and Bear It and don't forget to be pleasant!

I work for Amtrak, great job to have! I have a few tips for travel on my trains. If you can always get a bedroom! They are the best on the train. Try to avoid room E though, its the smallest. If you travel by coach try to go business class! Better seats by far. In a bedroom, after using the toilet rinse it out with the shower. The toilets are vacuum operated so dont flush anything but bodily waste and toilet paper! That goes for all of them btw. Weve upgraded the blankets and pillows! They are much nicer now. Bring snacks too. By all means enjoy a meal on the diner, but snacks are a must. Enjoy the ride and know there are guys like me doing everything we can to make your trip safe and comfortable.

Hi, Jeb. I've traveled with Amtrak, a number of times. I had booked the roomette, and was happy with it until I was upgraded to a room! Whoa! What a difference! Regarding sleeping, the roomette did sway so I didn't really sleep that well, but enough to get me through the rest of the trip. When I was upgraded to the room though, I really slept so well that I thought I was in my own bed, at home, that's how great it was. I learned that with the roomette I was sleeping with my head to the rear of the train, and the feet toward the engine, and with the room, I slept with my head toward the window, on one side, and the feet toward the window on the other side. Fantastic!

I think all you guys for the comments. Because for Thanksgiving I just rode the Amtrak train. In the regular seats however I'm disabled and it was very difficult for me but I did it from North Carolina to New Jersey and vice versa. The only problem was they didn't tell me the sea legs went up until late in the trip but I found that that was even worse for the back of my legs it was very painful. So my sister was telling me that sleeper cars were not good they were very small and unaccommodating due to my size. But I was able to see from the videos and your comments that it probably will be better for me so I'm going to try that the next time I travel

Hello Jeb, we need advise as trying to understand & navigate A track website is difficult. We want to go from Tacoma, WA (10: 25 a. m. pick up) to a drop off 3 hour layover at Sacramento, CA (hard pew seat for 3 hours! & no food in station) Then to get onto another train to head up to Salt Lake City Utah getting dropped off at 3: 00 am! is that part of the ride better to get a coach seat since we won't get the full night to sleep in a bed? Plus it looks like for the return trip it goes up north instead of going back the same way we came? Is it better to get a bedroom for that trip? I'm confused what's its telling us.

This was a great breakdown. I'm a huge Amtrak fan, but so far I've only rode in Coach and never a private room, and I suspect that will remain the case for some time to come. Even the Roomette is really expensive, especially considering that it's just the cost for one way, and that taking the train already increases your costs to begin with because then you'll likely have to rent a car at your destination. I've heard that trying to sleep overnight in Coach is unbearable, so not being able to afford a Roomette also means that my Amtrak travel will be limited to a day's worth of distance for the time being.

Thank you this was quite helpful! We want to travel from Tucson to NOLA next spring. do not like airlines anymore, thought about driving but ugh. so looking at the first time. I did go to the website first and was so confused! thanks for your help. I wonder how/if we can get any deals or discounts? I did sign up for the Amtrak Traveler deal. or whatever it's called. So, should we bring our own pillows? Overall, are they pretty clean and well kept? We would prefer our own bathroom for sure, so guessing the bedroom option is best for us. tho perhaps won't need the shower option. again, thanks

I think the thing that most everyone forgets when talking about the rooms is to mention that if someone is claustrophobic that they would be best not to get the roomette. I had one some years ago on a trip from Connecticut to Georgia and at night I had to leave the room a few times and go to the dinning car for more room for awhile. I've had better sleep in the back seat of a car than in a Roomette.

Worst service ever I had my ticket canceled after I prepaid and then they tried to give me a voucher for canceling my ticket I dont think they care about the problems of white people I felt completely ignored for being stranded states away from my home after arranging a prepaid seat - they took my money for nothing and now Im stuck thousands of miles from home with no car or hotel

I've traveled 30k miles around the country using a rail pass. One time I booked room when they had bogo. Found the room was very small. no leg room, I had to ride backwards. Very difficult to get out of top bunk at night when you wake up to go to restroom. Like having meals delivered to room and drink, like shower but wait till train stops. In coach go to middle. to toavoid no

I'm a victim of congestive heart failure, bad knees, and a problem back. I find the accessible bedrooms to fit my needs perfectly. They can let your bed down immediately and meals can be served to you in your room. The room has a toilet and sink and the shower room is a very short stride down the hall (Superliner. new viewliners have an ample shower in the room.

This sounds like a more comfortable way to travel for a wide array of people. Some people are afraid to fly. For anyone who deals with chronic pain, airplane seats are tight and uncomfortable. A visual learner would love the experience. Others would read, knit, or nap. I would love to travel between big cities that way do I hope more routes are added.

Question for a someone who has never traveled AmTrak. when you book a roommette. for, say $341 dollars, and it of course accommodates 2, is the cost $341 or does that cost double for two persons traveling together? I hope that question makes sense. thanks in advance for the help.

Here's one other reason why a family room might be the winner, if you have toddlers or young kids the space acts like a small hallway so they can move around without leaving thr room. The extra space helps pass the time for extended travel. Keep up the good work!

Thank you, Jeb. I'm going to start my transcontinental travel experience w/ Amtrak just to enjoy the views, eliminate traffic and road challenges, and to get to a destination quickly. I've watched you and your wife's other videos - which got me hooked.

Youre not lying about the app/website being a pain, im on the phone now with Amtrak trying to figure out why its breaking up my trip into multiple trains, im wanting to do the California Zephyr but its saying its going to be multiple trains. Im confused

I'll travel with my best buddy and I wanna book a room. My question for you: we each pay $1250 for the Room or we both split the total. Say if my buddy book the room on superliner, I chip in, correct?
Please give me some feedback. Thanks much

Never again would I take a train, my butt got numb from sitting, and snoring of others keeps me from being able to sleep a minute, the food was good, that's about it, people were not friendly, being real. I tell the truth others here are not.

I just got done with my first Amtrak trip. I took the crescent to DC from Atlanta.
I rode coach, and from here forward I'm taking a roomette. I didn't hate coach, I would just prefer to lay down, because I can't sleep in seats like that.

reply

I will get a roomette. But I want the most WINDOW space for my buck. My entire reason for taking the train is to see as much as I can out the window. Do you have any tips for which area of train to book a roomette for most window?
reply

The example given $150 per coach seat is only for one person, and a roomette, or bedroom accomodates 2 or 3, so when you compare prices, count how many people first and do the math. So 3 people would take $450 in coach seats.
reply

Are the roomette and room prices per person? I'm trying to figure out how to book a trip for me and my husband and I can't tell how to add a second person to the trip and whether that's going to add to the room cost.
reply

If traveling with spouse how is the charge, each paying full price for bedroom or is bedroom one cost and extra person another fee discounted, same with bringing a car, two charged for that or one charge for car?
reply

Hello Jeb. Just to let you know, Superliner coach cars, some only have seats upstairs. Downstairs would storage for checked luggage. As oppose to a baggage car. Sorry you don't like the pillows that Amtrak provides.
reply

Thanks for doing this! I agree, the Amtrak website is not very clear, so I appreciate this deep dive! $1259 for a bedroom - how does that work for 2 people? Is it $2518, or is the $1259 already for two people?
reply

Excellent video! This is the exact breakdown on rooms I needed while trying to book a trip from San Jose, Ca to Sacramento. (The Amtrak website really could do a better job at showing the seat/rooms differences)
reply

If your going Solo and Book a Roomette, will you get thrown in there with a random person? If you book a family room and there are 4 of you 2 adults 2 kids under 16, assume you paying that price times 4?
reply

My bf and I are night owls. We plan to travel in a roomette during the day. Can we turnover our own room? (i. e. Is there linen and a pillow in there already) Thanks for all you do!

I tried to get a sleeping car on Amtrak in October 1995 but unfortunately they were all sold out None the less the trip was exuberant inspite of that ( The Pacific Northwest Oregon )
