Cape Air Flight from Boston to Bar Harbor

Cape Air is one of Americas most interesting airlines. And on this Cape Air flight, we flew from Boston to Bar Harbor in a Cessna 420. The nine-passenger airplane is perfect for the mission Cape Air gives it, flying short connections between major cities and smaller, more rural outposts. In this video, you'll see what it's on a Cape Air Flight and understand what makes Cape Air so special. You'll see the seats, the (lack of) inflight entertainment, and the spectacular views along the New England coastline

The Priority Lounge was closed because the web site had incorrect info, oh well, may be after the pandemic their web site will be more accurate. Jeb had to reveal his weight to the check-in staff, no worries, it's a good motivation to lose some weight. He wasn't allowed to film the boarding process, no worries, he'll just give his viewers a quick update at the gate. There's no bathroom on the plane, that's okay, Jeb does his business before the flight. There's no in-flight entertainment, no problem, he got his iPad with a movie all queued up. The Cessna engine is super loud, not a problem, he brought his own Bose noise cancelling headphones. His seat doesn't have an overhead light, that's okay, he'll just skip that novel he wanted to read. The weather was cloudy and he didn't have much of a view, that's okay, because as the flight descended, at least the left side passengers got a nice view. Some viewer said Jeb was incorrect about the co-pilot seat controls are disabled, he wasn't offended, he PINNED the comment and thanked the viewer. Jeb HAS THE PATIENCE OF A SAINT!

I used Cape Air several times out of Ogdensburg NY (about an hour south of Ottawa and just across the US border) to Boston, with a switch in Albany. I pointed out the plane just outside the airside door of the terminal as we were going from security to the lounge area and he said, Oh, I thought that was the plane that was taking us to the real plane! That trip was on the night that Hurricane Sandy was hitting Boston, we had a lengthy delay in Albany until the pilot came to the podium and announced, Boston has given us clearance to land there if we have wheels up here in five minutes. With such as small passenger load we made out of Albany in time, and landed in torrential rain and whipping winds in Boston. The ground crew brought a barrel of umbrellas out to the plane for us to use on the dash into the airport.

I will say, being able to check off Cape Air (and sitting right seat) from my bucket list was something else. Kinda brought a whole new perspective on commercial flying and seeing how a small airline plays a really large part for these small communities like Bar Harbor, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. Not to mention, who doesn't love ground boarding (when the weather is nice, haha. Two things that sorta stuck out the most for me during my short hop were: 1 - If anything were to happen to the single pilot, well, I guess I would've had to learn how to fly REAL quick. and 2 - landing at BOS in a C402 is REALLY unsettling when you have to taxi next to an A380. All in all, I would love to give Cape Air another go if I can find a route that has the new Tecnam P2012s.

The drive from Boston to Bar harbor is definitely a drive to take. Every time i fly into Boston to visit my family, weve taken a trip to Bar Harbor because i just love it so much, hopefully once i get a pilots license, i will be able to fly myself into the town. The town itself is gorgeous as well, I love every bit of it. though the gift shop prices are questionable, its nothing compared to my hometown of Las Vegas, where prices at McCarran(now Harry Reid) are ludicrously overpriced.

Great video! Im completing my commercial pilots license and Cape Air is my number one choice for my first professional pilot job. Cape Air is not only focused on giving top notch service to their customers, but also to their employees. Arguably, they treat employees better than any other airline in the country; some of it at a profit-loss, just to make things better on a humanitarian level. Thanks for highlighting a little known airline!

Just curious, how did you get from Bar Harbor to Acadia NP? Once I pass my PPL Checkride (hopefully in a month or so) I want to take weekend camping trips to Acadia in my Dad's C172. I know the bus service to the airport was put on hold so is Taxi the only other way? I could get my mtn bike and my small trailer and camping gear in the plane if I needed to.

I've done this route with Cape Air a few times and have loved it. The most spectacular memory I have with them was a flight from St. Croix to San Juan. I was the only passenger! Just the pilot and I, and she was incredible. One of my more memorable flights! Thank you so much for the flashback.

Nice video. I used to do the old U. S. Airways Express flights from Boston to Bar Harbor on their 20 seat propeller planes growing up. The cockpit was still closed for those, so I'd say your experience was definitely cooler. Still, I think I'll stick to flying into Bangor now haha

I went on that flight once. When we were arriving in Bar Harbor, I saw oil streaming out of one of the engines. As the passengers were getting off the plane, I told the pilot there was an oil leak. He tapped his finger on the oil pressure gauge and said, Oh, it looks fine.

That's cool. I'm in pursuit of my private pilot license. Currently, I'm studying for my FAA written test. I should be taking it and ready by December or January 2023. My goal is to become a CFI and become an first officer for an regional carrier. I like aviation too.

Next time you are in Seattle, you should fly on Kenmore Air float plane from either Kenmore WA, or Lake Union-Seattle to the San Juan Islands. This airline also requests your weight before boarding. My response: driver's license weight or real weight?

Remember the 1990 sit-com Wings? The fictional Sandpiper Air also flew a Cessna 402 in New England. The 402 in the opening credits was eventually sold to Cape Air and, at least according to Wikipedia, is still flying.

You should try going from San Juan to Culebra on Air Flamenco. Same idea, but I think its more fun than this. You dont fly too high and its only about a 30 minute flight - you get great views.

If I ever visit the US I would love to take a trip with them, and I found them thanks to your awesome video! Loved this video and I'll be back for more videos from you: )

Love using Cape Air to fly to Vieques Island from the mainland in Puerto Rico. My tip. Dont bring too much luggage or it may not make it on the same flight as you

Go to Marthas Vineyard, Massachusetts this summer, a great island with beautiful sunsets and beaches with 6 unique Towns each one different than the other.

I live in Maine and it is truly beautiful. Logan is an okay Airport to me, they have been updating that place for years but the new terminal is beautiful.

I got to sit up front in a 402 from Boston to Martha's Vineyard. Awesome experience, although the pilot was 300+ lbs and that made me a little nervous.
reply

I have never flown a 402 but I have flown its big brother, the 404. Oh, as a pilot, not a passenger. Never a Cessna fan but still great aircraft to fly.

My dad sold a car to a Cape Air pilot and he invited us down to check out the planes which was really cool since I want to be a pilot when I get older.
reply

Not to discredit your comment too much, but the right-side controls are very much still functional. Note how they move when the pilot's controls move.

Nice to see you in my part of town! Im glad you enjoyed the hospitality that Maine has to offer. Next time youre in town, Lobster Rolls are on me!

We built a hub feeder airline in Virginia in the late 70's. We were Air Virginia Airline, Air Virginia is now flying under American Eagle banner.
reply

I've been on small planes for Trade Canyon and Death Valley flights where weight determines seating. Got to sit next to the pilot on one.
reply

Your weight is very important. Because this will be part of the total weight. Light aircraft that is overloaded will lead to disaster

Flown Cape Air twice. Marthas Vineyard - Boston, San Juan - St Thomas. Both short hops, professionally done by Cape Air. Recommended.

Watching this after arriving to Boston after a long drive from Bar Harbor.
Bar harbor Maine is beautiful. I love it there.

reply

I never have flown out of Bar Harbor, but have Bangor International. At my moms house you can see the planes landing at BGR.
reply

That is an OLD panel. The state of the art in the 1990s LOL. I would still fly it tough. It likes an old shoe. comfortable.
reply

Small communities need airlines all-year round like Cape Air to transport them from crowded hubs. I live on Martha's Vineyard
