In this video, youll see exactly what its like to board this Amtrak Commuter Train at Washingtons Union Station and travel through eight states over 458 miles inside an Amtrak Roomette, Amtraks smallest private room. Amtrak Commuter Train service through the northeast corridor is Amtraks most popular and theyve recently added an Amtrak Viewliner with Sleepers. I have only traveled on this train years ago also in a newer style roomeette. However I was traveling alone and found it to be spacious and comfortable and got a reasonable nights sleep. I have traveled extensively on Amtrak overnight trains and as you mentioned sometimes the track can be rather rough and make it harder to sleep. I generally found out my biggest problem was when the train would stop especially if it was for a longer time. It would tend to wake me up. I was surprised to hear the track on the northeast line was so bad, I generally ride this line on daylight coach trains and did not notice bad track, however at high speed especially if you are passing through track junctions the train can sway and rock. One other suggestion is the location of your sleeping room, I noticed you had room 3. If that was near the end of car you were most likely ridding over the trucks that have the wheels of the sleeping car. Middle of the car rooms usually ride smoother since the vibration is not directly under your room.
One last comment, the lounge car, snack bar attendants really vary in friendliness. Some are quite nice while others are like what you encountered. The best ones always announce at departure that the car is not open yet and then give another announcement when it opens and also give a warning announcement before they are ready to close it. I would suggest you try this trip again but if its for two the bedroom sleeper is much superior to a roomette for comfort of two people.

Ive slept in a roomette and in a passenger seat they both have advantage and disadvantages. The roomette yes a travel pillow of ones choosing would be nice. The old roomette with toilet Ive used, but yes it feels strange. The new roomette you would have the real toilet down the hall much better idea! Passenger seat you sleep barber chair style, not bad. Its the DVD players with movies that arent fun. Roomette access to dining car, for breakfast trust me in 10 minutes Ill be up for hot tea and food

Something nostalgic about the old name 'Night Owl' as it was known when Amtrak named all their trains. It makes me think of a train passing through the foggy darkness of Connecticut in the middle of the night being guided by the solitary headlight of an ex-NYNHH FL-9 locomotive.
As of now, Amtrak isn't using the Viewliner sleepers on the 66/67 trains. I'm guessing because of a shortage of needed sleepers on other trains or they are being refurbished. .

Im gathering Amtrack is very mediocre way of travelling. maybe the owners and staff need to travel on some of the better trains around the world to see how its supposed to be done. no yelling at customers/guests to get out! I wonder if that staffer still has her job, not if I had been there for sure. I dont tolerate rudeness nor should her employers. Loved the way the breakfast boxes sat on the toilet all night or seemed to anyway: )

What! 10 hours from Washington DC to Boston! Really? America, wake up! You really need highspeed rail! The distance from Washington DC to Massachusetts is 438 miles. That's between 7 and 8 hours by car. Reaching speeds of up to 240 pluss mph, a bullet train would get you there in 2 hours or less. Wow! Amtrak truly is slow and lethargic. Highspeed bullet trains and maglev super train technology, the new american dream.

When we moved from NYC to the Bay Area we did a similar thing. Our POD was going to take a week to arrive, California hotels are expensive so we figured the train would be a nice adventure. We travelled via the California Zephyr, three of us in a room. Was tight but not uncomfortable. Enjoyed meeting people in the dining room (most times we had a extra person added to our table. We love meeting new people

I used to travel to see family via Amtrak, and loved the roomette. I would put in earplugs, turn the lights out, and wake up the next morning. Onetime we had a hot box, and, of course, it sounded like it was all happening two feet under my pillow, cast of thousands coming to see what could be done, etc. other than that crazy trip, its always been great.

Great video content as always your spot on in keeping us well informed about the Amtrak rail system including both the good and, not so good things. For me I find that the roomettes although they can technically sleep two passengers. The space was very limited for two adults but doable for short excursions, but not long hall cross country travel!

The sticker price was a bit shocking! You can travel Beijing to Shanghai (just over 800 miles) in a first class sleeper for about 75 USD per person. Or on the high speed train (about 5 hours) in business class (highest class in China) for the same cost as your overnight train. The US is far behind in train travel!

I just did this train. in COACH. With a kid playing video games with no earphones all night long on the trip up. and then the trip back 2 small children banging the seat and asking the pointless kid questions. do not recommend. Well, in coach. I would take the issues in a roomette anyday!

Amtrak website was confusing. It would be simpler if they allowed one to input destination city and from, on stead of region. I never got the info I wanted.
Like to see: From XX to XX, date, class of seat. How hard could that be.
I thought there was no toilet in roomette?

I travel from Chicago to Tucson in a Roomette. It was fine for one person. It was so tight that once the attendant made my bed I couldnt move at all. It was better than sitting in a chair on the train. I would definitely do it again. More pluses than minus.

Enjoyed Suzanne. Ive been married 53 years - did not notice that/if she talked over you. Did like her point of view. Single use umbrellas are better than walking in the rain - sometimes. Strange, the eateries would close at 5: 00 - dinner time; BUT it is DC

I like the roomettes. California Zephyr doesn't have in room toilets or space for two suitcases. I would have considered this lucky - although we do have car toilets, coffee, and water all time. My husband and I don't find it uncomfortable.

I take the Northeast Regional all the time from Petersburg to DC except in coach. Its a nice train. Lots of legroom in the coach seats which is perfect for our 3 hour ride. We always pack a lunch too. The staff is always so friendly.

If I were with my wife in a roomette I dont think I would use the in room toilet like Oh dont mind me! BUT, having a roomette is a plus for both of us regardless and Amtrak has done a fantastic job of updating the older roomettes.

You mention the lack of showers several times. Most dermatologists recommend taking no more than 3 showers a week. I would not think on a short trip like this that lack of showers would present a problem. Like your videos BTW.
reply

In every video you talk showers a lot. It was an overnight trip. How many showers do you normally take in a 24 hour period? Unless you have a medical condition one is normally sufficient. Not trying to be mean just curious.

Ive always been happy in the roomettes, even with two people. Best part is upper bunk window.
And only the Viewliner 1s have in room toilets and sinks, the Viewliner 2s and Super liners have common facilities.

I'm a fan of amtrak because I love riding the rails, but over the years I've crossed paths with some lounge car employees with some real pissy attitudes, amtrak needs some under cover bosses on to fix this
reply

To use the toilet in the old Viewliners, one party usually steps outside the Roomette. The newer Viewliners do not have the in-roomette toilets. There are a few at the end of the car for use by all.
reply

I've heard a lot of people say the world umbrella but you seems to have won the most interesting pronunciation of that word. um-brellah. its almost like your pronouncing a foreign word
reply

I don't know who told Mr. Ramos Roomettes were shared with strangers. It doesn't happen. However, those coach bathrooms are gross - especially on those overnight trains!
reply

Dude you are P whipped my friend. The upset bunk is smaller so she should take it but she talked you into it and you agreed. Got to admit lost some respect for you.

I personally love trains but flying is a very close second in my heart. Im hopeful Amtrak can get it together, and cant wait for the new high speed rail on the NEC.

Public transport and Railways in USA are purposefully kept backward so that auto industry profits and juggernaut at expense of even low income household.

Does Amtrak have trains that can hold a handicapped person, plus that weigh over 400 pounds? Please help I want to go to Philadelphia from West Palm Beach
reply

I remember, so well, when trying to walk from the roomette to anywhere, that the train's rocking motion made me feel as though I was on board a ship!
reply

Jeb you and Susan should try the Alaska marine highway from Bellingham WA North. I'm from Sitka Alaska, so there you go. You two are my Fav.
