First Flight from the ONLY STATE Without Flights (Avelo Airlines)

Watch this video to see what its like to fly with the new low cost carrier Avelo Airlines! We took the inaugural flight from Wilmington, Delaware to Orlando, Florida in February 2023 to see what this low cost airline is really like. If you watch this video youll see everything Avelo Airlines offers, which is not much. Well even showcase the extras we paid for including carry-on bags, priority boarding, and even seat selection, which didnt work. Youll even see a JebScore for the airline at the end of the video and a water cannon salute for this brand new service. This is also exciting because low cost airline Avelo Airlines adding service to Wilmington, Delaware means Delaware is no longer the only state in the United States without passenger flights! So, that made this celebration a big deal, so youll see the party the Wilmington, DE airport threw, too!

Flew Avelo from Wilmington to Fort Myers Feb 10th. A quick Friday-Monday weekend trip. The airport experience was great. Easy parking (only $8/day, and was through security in minutes (took longer to take shoes/belt on/off than it did waiting in line. The waiting room after security (there is only one, is nice. Plenty of seats. But the only amenities are 3 vending machines! I'm used to several restaurant choices for breakfast, etc. NOTHING! Luckily I brought some snack crackers, and I got a bottle of soda in the vending machine. Glad I did, as there is NOTHING given or sold on this flight. No water, NOTHING! So keep this in mind for anyone considering. Bring food with you, and plan to purchase any liquids out of a vending machine. Found it odd that the inaugural flight included water (bad tasting or not.
When planning my flight, I chose a seat with increased legroom and I always choose a window seat. I love looking outside. I chose 8F as it was both an extended leg room seat, and a window seat. To my surprise. Row 8 is the ONLY row in the plane WITHOUT a window! Come to find out that it is the row with reinforcement rings around the fuselage to protect the cabin in the event of an external engine failure. Flight crew was very nice, as was the overall experience.
Flight home was better as row 4F had two windows!
My issue with the company is that I've now sent two emails with pictures of my non-existent window that I paid extra for. There has been ZERO reply to these emails. I was nicely asking for some sort of reimbursement as I did not have a window. Where as if I paid extra for an aisle seat. every row has an aisle! So. Avelo Airlines. Please check your emails and at the very least, reply.
Keep up the great content Jeb!

The price isn't bad but I think Breeze Airways (MX) offers a better pricing & glad to see them continue to grow as they get more A220s. I flew them in December nonstop CAK-PBI in the Nicer section (it was an E195 & didn't have the Nicest cabin. My fare was a total of $109. 00 one way and included a seat with 3 more legroom than the Nice cabin, 1 personal item, 1 carry on bag & 1 free checked bag, priority boarding, my seat assignment when I made the reservation, & a small snack (bottled water & a Kind bar. I wish Avelo well because it's nice to see these airlines starting some of their service to underserved airports. On a historical note; I remember when ILG had daily service with EA DC9s & AL CV580s. The flights were very short with the service to PHL, DCA, TTN, etc.

Frontier only started serving Wilmington in July 2013 with flights to Chicago-Midway, Houston, Denver, Orlando, and Tampa. Fort Myers was added later in the year. Then in June 2015, they announced they would leave Wilmington, only for them to make the announcement in January 2020 that they wanted to return. I think you can see where this is going. Due to the pandemic, it was delayed but they returned in February 2021 before leaving once again in June 2022. If that doesn't show how cursed Wilmington Airport is, I don't know what will. And that's just a PART of the curse, as another airline that tried to tap into Wilmington is Skybus Airlines on March 8, 2008 with flights to Columbus and Greensboro. the airline ceased all operations not even a MONTH later on April 4!

About a year ago, we were at the Baton Rouge airport to rent a car. It was taking forever to process the rental (time moves SLOWLY in Louisiana, apparently) and some 45 minutes went by while I had my eye on the runway waiting to spot a plane. In that entire time, I never saw one single plane land or take off from this airport. Even as we finally drove away from the airport, I kept watching and never saw an airplane. We came back a few days later for our scheduled flight home to Atlanta and it was canceled (we had to rent yet another car and drive ten hours home) To this day I am convinced that Baton Rouge has no passenger flights, either!

My family used Avelo to fly from Redding, CA to Burbank, CA in June 2021. We were very happy with our flights. We weren't expecting any frills, but they delivered what we expected, they got us from place to place safely. I'm sorry that they lost your reservation for a seat with more legroom. I booked one seat in an exit row for my husband and the row behind him for me and the kids. This worked perfectly. We were all comfortable. I was sad to see that they have now limited the number of flights to and from Burbank to one day per week, but on the upside, they also fly from Redding to Las Vegas, NV. I would still fly with them again.

I used to also wonder if also Rhode Island has any city major enough to have an airport with commercial airliner flights, but they do, Providence. I've also wondered that about Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine, but Vermont has Burlington, N. H. has Manchester, and Maine has Portland. Delaware is the only state with no towns big enough for a commercial airport.
I've also in the past questioned North or South Dakota, but Fargo N. D. has a commercial airport, and so does Sioux Falls, S. D. Their airports aren't very big but they have one

Enjoying your videos! I've flown from New Haven which saves me a lot of time and hassles than heading to the NY Airports; Flying Avelo you have to 100% know what you're getting and what you're not. Hit one of their sales, bring a carry one non-rolling bag to avoid the bag fee and you can get to anywhere for less than $99 on the East Coast. I can say so far, the people are much nicer that work the flights and on the flights but then again I've not flown on any other point except to Florida.

Avelo opened a base down here at RDU in North Carolina last February. The airport isn't exactly a regional one or lacking passenger service (they're competing with AA, WN and DL on most FL routes) but Avelo has caught on with passengers. Within months of them opening the base, they've announced four more routes (Manchester, Memphis, Rochester, Melbourne/Orlando) on top of the six Florida routes and their hub in New Haven they already serve.
Can't wait to try them out this summer.

I flew Avelo two years ago here in California from Burbank to Santa Rosa. No frills, yes, but on a fairly quick flight it's not that big a deal. The crew was awesome, the plane nice and clean, and the hospitality packs passed out included water, cookies and a hand sanitizing wipe. But the best part was my round-trip fare of just $48. You can't even drive from Burbank to Santa Rosa for $48, so that fare was quite amazing. I look forward to flying Avelo again soon!

Naw, I'd rather have just booked a flight on Southwest, not that I really like them. But you'd get snacks and soda / juice, often times then are exactly the same or a few bucks more than discount airlines usually with lots of frequency. Just my thoughts but good luck to Avelo ( the airline that mandates there entire company to be vaccinated, I'm also not a fan of corporations playing doctors so that's a BIG plus to SWA for reversing course early on!

we have discovered Avelo from West Palm Beach to New Haven, since it is hard to find a non stop flight from West Palm or Fort Lauderdale to Connecticut. As you stated it is no frills, as long as you understand that it is fine, i will say the extra $$ for more leg room is well worth it, i am 5' 11 just like you are Jeb, and i did take one flight like you did, basically without legroom, now we pay for the legroom

My only gripe -- and all airlines are guilty -- is the hype about there having been no service. As pointed out in the video and the comments, it's been only a few months that ILG has been without service. United used to serve the airport, and Eastern long before that. Avelo's not an airline for me, but I hope they're able to make this work the way the others couldn't.

As someone who goes to college in Daytona Beach and is from Delaware, having Avelo fly directly to Daytona Beach from Wilmington is amazing, I will say when departing Delaware arrive around 45 minutes before boarding, with just one security machine it does take a while, seats past security are enough and vending machines are all thats available so do bring a snack.

Not only is Philly too close, but BWI is an hour train ride away, both major hubs. I don't see this lasting without either another airline or more destinations besides Florida.
New Haven is different since their nearest competitor, Hartford Bradley, is an hour away on a good day, and not a hub. They're much more likely to stick around.

From Delaware myself! ;) It looks like they've added Wilmington to Nashville as an option, I plan on going to Tennessee soon and trying to debate to drive 15 hours or take this airline for almost 2 - 3 hours then get a rental car to Memphis. Happy to see you in my neck of the woods!

Dover DE is apparently the only state capital in the 48 that has no interstate highway as well. Honestly I am just over the bridge and had no clue Wilmington had an airport, I know New Castle has one. I knew it was an alternate to 30th street for the Acela train.

I've flown a lot, on every major carrier. This low cost airline is everything I want in an airline. Great airline. All I want is to get from A to B. I don't want anything but water. I don't need a lounge. Prices are perfect. Seats and service are great.
reply

Low cost/low fare/budget airline. All equal a cheap airline. You got nickled and dimed to fare that compares to any non low fare airline. You know that old saying you can put lipstick on a pig. it's still a pig.
You score of 10 out of 25 says it all.

Andrew Levy (CEO of Avelo) also worked at United in addition to Allegiant, so it doesn't surprise me that some items on the plane were sourced from UA. And they have a contract with Delta TechOps for the aircraft maintenance.

If my state had a choice between remaining without regular passenger air service and getting it with only CRJ200s, I'd have to think long and hard before I say forget about it or Sure. Great! Now, what's a masochist anyway!
reply

Pet peeve as a Delawarean: the CEO and founder of Avelo said Delaware valley, but the Delaware valley is actually a region in southeastern Pennsylvania right on the border of Delaware, but not actually in Delaware
reply

Avelo is very popular in New Haven, CT to places in Florida. You are stuck either going to NYC airports or north to Hartford, CT. Plus New Haven is expanding their airport as they want more airlines there.
reply

27 pitch? Outrageous. Avelo won't b getting any of my 6'5 business.
So how do the FAs fill their cruise-time if they're not doing any catering service? The airline's missing a revenue opportunity.

reply

Avelo is how many airlines to begin and end service at Wilmington New Castle Airport in Delaware? The airport has ample charter flights. Years ago saw Air Force One there when W came to the area.
reply

Airport should be closed. Un needed airport waste of tax payer money! 41 dollars for a 25, 000 airline ticket! That's how much those tickets are worth without government assistance to airlines.
reply

Flown Avelo from Burbank to Eureka, it's the perfect type of flight if you're taking a short flight. Honestly if it wasn't for Avelo, I probably would have never gone up to Eureka and explored that area.
reply

Avelo seems to do what it promises to do well. The price certainly cant be beat. Losing your seat assignment isnt good form, though, and the seat pitch is horriblebut seat pitch is horrible everywhere.
reply

The fare seems about typical but what is aggravating is the airline is aggressively trying to trick its customers when the plain ticket is like of the price of everything with the add-ons.
reply

We had Avelo in Arizona twice - from Phoenix-Mesa Gateway and Tucson, both times flying to Burbank. Both times, they pulled out, likely becAAuse of stiff competition in the Southwest
reply

Love all the new airlines these days. Im in Canada so Flair swoop and lynx have changed the market (more so Flair and lynx since westjet only operates swoop to kill competition)
