Is Airline Food REALLY That Bad Watch this video to see the answer! We'll compare it on AA v Delta v United. In this video, we'll see what it’s like to taste test in-flight burgers on every major US Airline including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines. We put this question to the test: is airline food any good We’ll try America’s favorite food - the burger - on three airlines to find out. Watch to find out! We chose burgers because all three airlines serve one, but they're very different. But after years of cost-cutting, it is harder than ever to even know when you’ll be served a meal onboard, even in first class! We’re sharing our secret hacks for knowing the airline rules around when you will, and will not get fed. American's burgers and fries look half-hearted with the expectation that the pretzel bun adds all of the flavor. But then, you have to fly AA which never fails to disappoint in other aspects, in my experience (thanks for the cancelled route [not just a flight] that caused me to miss a $7k cruise. Delta's Shake Shack burger is all that and more ) in my two experiences. Almost heaven in the sky. The only downside is that one's fingers get super greasy and that leaves fingerprints on the IFE screens as well as personal devices. I flew United today (into the face of this great winter storm on 1/24/26 - crazy I know) and the flight met the conditions for a burger but all we got was snacks.

Yeah I agree. I'm a fan of selective carry on from concourse to consume in air. There's a group that feels there should be no carry on food at all to the plane.
Which is correct etiquette on this subject
Especially nowadays were there is no food service
I think a burger is where I'd stop cause even a whopper will have a strong smell but I'm not bringing Indian food, fish, etc. Yet I definitely check for a sandwich shop option, it's a win/win for everyone
Only reason I would be upset at someone is a ridiculous strong food or the fact I didn't get something for myself!
Chime in! Whacha think

I flew Delta first class last Saturday around 11 am. The Shake Shack meal was excellent! It's my favorite and they didn't disappoint. The bottom bun was toasted and I burned my fingers on the super heated dish. I have to mention the potato chips. I don't like crinkle cut fries so I was glad they didn't try. These potato chips were perfect - not a single spot, eye or skin - just pure white. I have never had chips that good. But the brownie - omg, salted! Best ever! Nothing was greasy. Top bun was perfectly warm, not toasted.

Thanks for the terrific video! I rarely fly any airline other than United, so it's nice to see what they offer.
I can say from first hand experience that United's burger is pretty good. Flight attendants have told me it's not unusual for a First Class passenger to request one instead of their FC meal. If you sit too far back though, there is a chance they'll be sold out before they get to your row.
In a related question, how are United's Tacos al Pastor I've been curious about them since they were added to their menu.

The shake shack burger comes with chips and not fries is for the reason you complained about with the American Airines fries. because there’s no kitchen, fries r harder to reheat on an airplane n shack shack n delta would rather u have crispy chips instead of an inconsistent experience with fries reheated. That also goes with the burger buns, sometimes they can come out hard so they are instructed to leave the top bun out of the oven and this is how shack shack requests delta prepare the burgers.

I would love to see this blown up to international, do all the partner and alliances. For instance, American Airlines, British Airways, etc. and try to go around the world with the partnership and make it back to the U. S. The challenge is to eat food of the destination country, so if they serve you American food, you cannot eat it. It has to be food that would most reflect the destination country. I have always wanted to try this.

As a chef, it’s so fun to see how the airlines pull off burgers (and occasionally fries) at 40000 feet! Looks like some are reheating and others may be using sous vide and a toaster oven Would love to see the United Offering. I also have an inkling some airlines may be using a convection/microwave/circulation appliance for the fries. In that case, it very much would come down to the FA’s level of knowledge/effort.

Love the sad trombone. We too have noticed Delta’s removal of salad’s from domestic first class as well as removing bread from breakfast service. Talk about cheap. On our flight from ATL to DC last week, the FA in front told us they only catered (4) of each type of spirit, so no G&T for us by the time they made it to the last row of F. Trevor is a fan of the Shake Shack burger with the fresh toppings!

Delta definitely has the edge with traditional burgers in the sky at this point (my better half has tried those and the Alaska option and Delta wins hands down) It's an interesting point to fight over other than maybe for the US market as there a other things that make much better options at 35, 000'. Honestly, I always really enjoyed the Alaska cheese plate. Thanks for the vid sir.

Its amazing how cheap and terrible food has become on flights. I remember in the 80s still getting full dinners in coach on mid range flights and then in the 90s and early 2000s you could still get a sandwich or a breakfast sandwich in coach. I'm amazed that some airline doesnt try to beat the other by starting to up their game in food for coach as well to get more passengers.

I always say every airline I have flown had good food. Surprisingly though when I think about it, Singapore served something they called ice cream but it wasn't. I did not like that and my wife excepted an extra sandwich for me (cause I eat everything. But it was a soggy vegetable make me sick to my stomach sandwich. It wasn't well labeled.

It's possible United loaded the burgers onboard, but they may have run out by the time they reached your row. I know 1K fliers receive a free menu item, and they were probably seated further ahead in Economy Plus. I've often experienced this when sitting in the rear of the plane in economy when they often have sold all the hot menu items already.

I guess the main point of an airline is to get you from A to B without crashing. I’ve never expected much more from them so I’m used to the delays, crappy food and uncomfortable seats. They are usually faster and you can’t take a train overseas so there is that.
Also I can just watch your experiences and enjoy them.

My only time flying first class was on United a few years ago. Pre-ordered a burger on the leg from DEN to Houston on a 777 and thought it was pretty tasty. Liked it enough that on the leg from IAH to ORF on a 737 they offered it as a menu choice and I had another one! I don’t remember having fries, but I didn’t miss them.

I don't fly on commercial airlines. I much prefer road trips with a rental car. I'm guaranteed meals to eat because I'm stopping at restaurants to eat and much better food than what is served on commercial airlines. That's my thoughts on the way that I travel. Plus, I can plan my own itinerary, not missing the flight, etc.

Just flew Delta first class and had the breakfast. Not bad but could've been better. Had to fly main cabin on the flight home, had the Sun Chips and I couldn't believe how small they were. This is probably the most expensive of the legacy carriers and they are still cutting corners on cheap snacks. Honestly just pathetic.

I had a burger in United economy a few years ago. It exceeded my low expectations. It wasn't anywhere close to the best burger I've ever had, but it wasn't the worst, either.
On another note, what's with the packaged brownie for dessert on the Delta flight You'd think they could do better than that in first class.

Hello Suzanne and Jeb! I noticed in your previous video and this as well that your voices are garbled during flight. I can't recall noticing this phenomenon n earlier videos. It appears to the layman that you have new gear or settings which doesn't work out so well) Maybe you could take a look into this matter

Ok I love me a good burger. but the only place I would do that on a flight would be if desperate on Ryanair (still have not reached that level of desperation. Fries do NOT belong on the reheated menu - lasagna is awesome, hummus and creamy stuff is great, why the hell are you destroying a burger in the air

Bro, I LITERALLY plated that Shake Shack burger you are eating on Delta, 5 times a day. It is pretty fire but there are so many times where we have to make them on the fly and those Crinkle Chips, they are nice. We go through so many case a day. I work for the catering company that makes the food
