Great video, I must try this myself sometime. Here is a suggestion for a train trip in Australia: Melbourne to Cairns. Yes, it is a long one, but it is interesting. You would start in Melbourne and go to Sydney in one day, just over 11 hours. This is just a regional train; the website says you can book sleeper berths. I think the food is basic. If you buy food on the train, do that early, or there may be nothing left. You can bring your own food too. I have done it and thought it was a great day out.
You would need to book a hotel in Sydney for the night. Next is the Sydney to Brisbane, which is about 14-15 hours. I think you will need to stay in Brisbane overnight. This is a great train trip, too.
The train from Brisbane to Cairns is newer and is more to your style. This is the longest part of the trip at 25 hrs. I think you will like this too. Love your videos. I have not done the Brisbane to Cairns by train, but I have driven from Melbourne to Cairns.

I do the DFW-SYD route twice a year from Australia. I am now Platinum status with Qantas so I get to use the American Airlines Flagship Lounge. When you have a 7hr transit it makes it much more comfortable. Qantas has only been using the A380 on that route every day from January 2026. I will fly that plane for the first time in Business Class (I have requested an upgrade to First in both directions) in May. Previously, they flew the 787-9 which doesn’t have First Class. If you fly Business with Qantas, choose a window seat in an odd numbered row in the pointy end. The seat is closer to the window with the bench on the aisle which gives you more privacy from people walking the aisles while you sleep. On the A380s Business is in the front of the upper deck.

Jeb, please take care walking on a concourse with a camera. I had the horrible experience of being transported at DFW on a passenger assistance vehicle. Several people sit sideways on it, the driver is at the rear, and it hurtles along with the driver shouting at people to get out of the way - what with people using their phones, talking into cameras, wearing earphones and just plain not listening, it was terrifying as we nearly missed what seemed like tens of passengers! They don't have hooters or beeping noises, just the drivers yelling! I use a wheelchair at airports so I get to see how people aren't looking where they are going, or aren't paying attention, and it's pretty scary!

Yesterday we did Melbourne to LA in the same seats as you - 3A and 4A on the Qantas A380. I’ve done it several times, always as a points upgrade from business and the single reason I do it is the bed. The food is nice, the staff and service good, but really the Qantas business class is fine in both those regards. However the bed is simply one of the best in the sky, chalk and cheese compared with business especially for a tall guy like me. It was even better when they used lambs wool toppers instead of the current memory foam but who’s complaining! I got 7 hours solid sleep on the trip, arrived fresh and ready for a full day.

I’ve bookmarked the Upgraded Points blog; thanks for the tip!
I recently booked a trip from Austin to Auckland for late this summer and found that my (United) miles didn’t go quite as far: more like 350K miles or $9K (R/T) for business class. Someday, perhaps, I’ll be able to be more flexible on travel dates and travel on the deals, but for now, Premium Plus (and throwing miles money at the chance of an upgrade at least one way) seems to be the best option when one has to purchase two tickets (if one wants to stay married) and can’t yet travel on the deals.

congrats on 1 mill! There is no value proposition for First Class, you either do it because you can or you don't do it! It is irrelevant how much more you get from Emirates or Etihad or Lufthansa no one who is flying first class is going. hmm I see the value in this ticket. They do not care as it is not relevant. Assuming I am looking for FC I am only going to choose FC with Qantas if it is the best offering on the route I am flying. 7 out of 10 times that is going to be not the case. 2 of the 3 other times it is probably the only offering: D

Have not been on Qantas F in a long time. Just went to that lounge on my trip to New Zealand ON American Business from there. Qantas Business always better! The only thing I dont like is no WIFI on Qantas. But American Free WIFI is not great over the South Pacific anyway. I love that steak sandwich. They have a special grill on the plane to make it. Its not that normal microwave stuff. I love Sydney! Those F seats are tough to find though. I always search.

Apologies for my earlier comment, data today has shown that Sydney has snuck back in front of Melbourne as Australia's biggest city. SYD leads MEL 5. 56M to 5. 35M but Melbourne is catching back fast with a bigger growth rate. But make sure you visit Hobart. Our city is the size of the difference between Sydney and Melbourne with a harbour better than the former and a museum better than all in Melbourne (and the world) - MONA.

The bed is such an underrated part of business/first class products, especially mattress toppers and bedding. I flew an overnight 'sleeper service' on Singapore Airline's A380 business class and there was no mattress and very limited bedding. For such a well regarded airline and seat it's really disappointing to see such lackluster bedding, especially on a dedicated sleeper flight

It is a bit rough having to share the lounges with the lower classes, like business! :-. Actually we like good quality more simple meals than the super-posh stuff. I don't know how people eat all that plane food, even if it is great. We starve ourselves before going on a business class flight, so we can enjoy the meals more.
The fee is more like $ 30, 000 in Oz dollars.

Your review is interesting. Many of us enjoy the lack of wifi and the purposeful disengagement while flying trans pacific. I would question the need for internet on this flight.
The airlines you listed as having a better first class product do not offer service between the USA and Australia - perhaps a more relevant comparison is to the legacy American carriers who do.

Ironically, when you posted this, our young person and I had been to Roma Street Station in Brisbane. He asked if both of you were there. I scoffed and said I thought not. Then to my surprise, you then posted about Australia! Trains is our young person’s special interest. He wants to know if you went on a train trip whilst in Australia

Look no matter which way you look at it. $20k is quite ridiculous for a 1 way flight. No matter how much you make. Points 100% it's ok. I can justify business occasionally. Ultimately, Qantas is not worth it (I'm Australian, apart from several routes I avoid Qantas like a plaque. From lounges to the hard product itself, it's not good enough.

I flew British Airways first class from Houston to London overnight. The crew was awesome. They came around and asked each of us if we wanted to sleep the while way, or if we wanted to bet woken up for breakfast a little bit before landing. Never had a US based crew do that. International crews just seem better.
reply

WOW, looks like Business class on just about every other international carrier. QANTAS, you just keep disappointing me.
I'm Australian, and after our last flight with QANTAS and the way they treated us after their multiple failures on what is the return flight you just took, we will never fly QANTAS again.

Not hating, but what do you two know about luxury You seem like Bill and Gladys from Ohio, too happy, and lack taste and style. (Using really really and amazing amazing to describe something ) Giving that food four’ stars, what gets three stars, a bowl of stale cornflakes with luke warm skim milk

I flew Qantas Business to Sydney from Tokyo and I had heard mixed things. At the end of the day, was it perfect No. But the service was amazing and so kind. The seat was good enough and the food was generally nice. I’ve no complaints. Congrats on 1 Million Subs. Can I get a watch video now; )

I am definitely a caviar girl! Had the opportunity of flying a couple of times first (LH and QA) and many times business (Emirates Airlines.
I found it so sweet: you had a red wine but chose a seabass fish for dinner and your sweetheart had a white wine but chose beefcheeks meat for dinner : D

I have flown Qantas First Class several times in the A380. I love it. Re the pyjamas, the logo is not over the top because it's discrete in keeping with Qantas First Class. Yes the bed is extremely good. The food is also very nice. Of course the crew are ALWAYS wonderful. Thank you Qantas.
