Flying with Air Kenya to Masai Mara antony: I work at the Wilson airport(different firm though, and I love your videos, this particular one caught my attention cos it's in my backyard. made me realize how well maintained the dash-7 are. old but they perform very well especially when you are going for safaris, where the government wants to preserve the authenticity of the parks, the airstrips are all dirt. if it rains, buddy you will be pushing that aircraft out of mud puddles in the middle of the wild, now that's real bush safari. ooh and the mints, they've been giving those out since I was 12 years. karibu Kenya tena

Hey Jeb! When I graduated from UGA in 1984, my best friend and roommate went to work as a DJ at a Columbus, GA radio station, as he was a graduate of the J-school at Georgia. I flew on the De havilland dash 7 many many times, and sometimes they would move us around to equal out the weight. I was always amazed at the very short takeoff roll of that plane. a couple of years later, my friend moved to Albany, GA. and I kept right on with the Dash 7, along with the Shorts 360. Lots of fun stories there. Thanks for taking us along!

In January I flew in a Cessna caravan in Tanzania 3 times. One of those times in quite heavy turbulence. When we would fly through the cloud we would drop metres and make sharp turns. At some point we saw a big thundercloud. Afterwards we had landed the pilot told that we wouldve lost our wings if we wouldve flown through that cloud. It was quite and experience.

I was in this airport and flew to Masai Mara just a few years ago, great views, great terrain, great planes, great people, and great experience. I'm glad someone was able to document this uncommon and amazing journey so others could experience the beauty of it as well.

Love the Dash 7 and the Twin Otter Jeb. Ever thought of riding a Tyrolean Airways Dash 7 into Courchevel Altiport (LFLJ) in the French Alps? BTW. would love to see some more classic propliner action: Convair 580 (especially) or DC-3!

You're a braver man than I am (or more foolhardy. I'm not flying any African based airline. If I get an urge to see a giraffe, there's a few at a wildlife park about an hour drive from where I live.

That age for a plane is not as bad as people think. Its quite common to fly on planes that are 'old'. I have been multiple times on a Douglas DC 10 and I think they are in their 50s now.

The APU was either off or it was inoperative which is why the lights werent working on the ground. Once the engines are on, the source of AC load become the engine driven generators.

If you travel a lot because of work it reaches a point you are no longer picky about what airplane to use when flying around Kenya. Haja ni ufike ufanye works. you make those dollars.

Jeb thanks for these great posts
Just a side note it's an FAA and CAA requirement that all commercial Aircraft (even new ones) are still fitted with ashtrays, strange but true.

These were originally made by de Havilland. However, when boeing bought de Havilland, they cont. to produce it. Now Bombardier owns the rights and made them exclusive for viking air

Flew these on pretty much the same trip and loved the experience. The twin otter is so cool and because it doesn't go to high, the views are incredible!

Only 113 aircraft where build. Dash7 is the greatest aircraft ever for the special performance, Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) category!

we live in Kenya and those flights out of Wilson to Masai Mara are very nice and much easier than the stress of driving 5-7 hours from Nairobi

Is it just me that noticed the the reverse thrust, throttle, landing were on top of the cockpit instead of in front on the second flight
reply

Ok I have flew single engines, twin propellers, twin jet engines but never have I piloted or rid as passenger in a 4 propeller plane

According to another video there were 113 Dash 7's built. I just flew clear across Canada and got a small bag of pretzels, thanks guys!

This was actually more interesting than most of the ultra luxurious first class private luxury accommodations that you present.

Wow. Getting to fly on a twin otter. Great workhorse of a plane.
I liked it back when I was flying it around in FSX.

great! My flight into the Mara and back was by Cessna Grand Caravan - much less exciting. I did see the Dash-7 though.

I see these old aircrafts and I think however many people want to travel on them, flying it is a pilot living their dream

This video is a lot cooler after seeing Noels Air Kenya video yesterday. who knew Jeb was the terminal entertainment?
reply

Kenya is great. the dirt runways are great.
No need to mess with nature by adding tarmac at a national park

Those Twin-Otter seats looked lie ones from a train. And the great view into the cockpit was amazing!
reply

I wonder when the dash 7 will be retired because 4 engines for a 50 seat airplane wasn't a good choice
reply

Anyone know what that lever from the roof is that the pilot and first officer hold on to when landing?
