Is there anything more romantic than a flight on a Boeing 747! Well, I recently flew UPSTAIRS in Lufthansa Business Class on one of Lufthansa's Boeing 747-8's (D-ABYF! It's the first leg of my amazing journey from Washington, DC to Kenya's Masai Mara. Over the next several weeks, I'll be sharing more trip reports! This Lufthansa 747-8 Business Class upper deck experience was really amazing. Watch this video to see what made the trip so special. And there was a lot! Not only was sitting on the 747 upper deck in business class amazing, but the cabin crew also offered a few extra treats along the way. Along the way, this flight report will include information about the seats, the inflight entertainment, the food, and the cabin crew from this Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 flight! You can even watch the Boeing 747 upper deck take off! What do you think of Lufthansa Business? Let me know in the comments!

You rock! Such a great review of Lufthansa's J product! I decided to forego non-stop carriers for a trip to visit family in Sweden before the pandemic hit in '19 and specifically chose Lufthansa (LAX-FRA then FRA-ARN) just to enjoy upper deck business class on the 747-8. Snagged seat 81A and had the row all to myself. Best part of the cabin if you want that cozy, private jet like feel. 83 A/C and H/K in front of the exit door are a close second as nobody is behind you tapping on an IFE monitor.
As for my ideal time vs. $ value in each cabin class.
1-3 hours in Economy
5 hours (Transcon routes or West Coast to Hawaii) in Premium Economy
12 hours in Business Class
14+ in First

Ideal length of flight? Well, in an ideal world no aircraft able to hold fuel for more than 4 hours of flight should ever have me onboard, but my work has a nasty habit of making mince meat of that ideal. On my own dime, however, Ive hold true to that for the last 25 years.
Ill be on this flight in a little over a week. It was selected for the sole purpose of flying the 747-8; Im not a big fan of either Lufthansa or connecting in Frankfurt. But I still chose this over a direct flight because, 747-8. Oh, and Ill be the best seat upstairs for an eastbound flight: 84K

I love going to the airport. The energy of starting a journey, seeing the hustle-&-bustle of people going to all destinations, boarding the plane and taking off. But, once at altitude the buzz wears off and my inner child starts asking (are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet? ?. And I despise landings. No fear of flying but I am truly afraid of the landings. Only when our speed has been reduced to just a few MPH do my nerves let up. By the time I arrive at my destination I am so, so ready to get off the plane and exit the airport as soon as possible.

I flew Lufthansa from Houston to Frankfurt back in 2016, for a birthday trip to Berlin. I left the day before my birthday, and as we reached our cruising altitude, the head flight attendant came to my seat in economy and asked me my name and said is it your birthday? I said tomorrow is, and she said well its today in Germany and handed me an amenity kit. I thought it was so nice of them, even though it gave me trouble when going back through security in Frankfurt to continue on to Berlin

Yeah, every time I walk down the Business class isle, I also think, as I'm continuing walking to coach, how these turkeys got bailed out, didn't pay it back, and also have the nerve to fly most expensive. So, I bought there ticket and I also bought my $900 coach ticket to Hong Kong. Class division is right. What's next? Business right offs that I'm not allowed to do, even though have the same expenses? Yeah, right. That wouldn't happen in this fair, educated, CW progressive system.

I love this flight review cant wait to try to try Lufthansa on their beautiful new 747-8 I love the 747.
Although their new A350 is beautiful( I also love your A350 review of Lufthansa minus the cruddy cabin they kept! ) as well I cant say I love the A350 more but both jets are beautiful
For my ideal flight length Id say 2 hours Economy, 6 hours Business, 10-11 hours in First Class!

Unfortunately I never flown on any double decker aircrafts and still fly economy. I am close to business class for Qatar airlines but not yet. The best plane I have flown so far is the Boeing 777 Qatar. But 2 years ago It was my first time flying in a 787 And my first time flying KLM. It was good but the service was bad lol. I fly Qatar most of the time cus of good service.

We flew non-stop from San Francisco to Istanbul in Turkish Airline's Business Class. About 11 hours. Being able to sleep on a flat bed made it wonderful. The only hitch was on the flight home the gate would not allow my wife to bring her CPAP onboard, even with all the medical certifications we were asked for before our trip. So she had to stay awake the whole flight.

I like seven or eight hours, especially over land where you can see landscapes. Australia has internal flights of four or so hours. Overwater where all you see is water, I prefer flying overnight. Also, seven hours into a new location I have never been to before, Which basically means the next time I fly into Singapore I will need to fly in and sleep overnight.

2 hours in economy. Not comfy, and amenities are lacking, especially now during cv19.
10 hours in business, so long as you have aisle access. Gives plenty of time to enjoy the seat, but you don't get stir crazy.
ALL THE WAY 18 longest flight for international first haha. The amenities are always amazing, and I never get tired of flying in these seats!

Great review! Thank you for posting. We are going to be traveling on Lufthansa in 747-800 Business Class and were wondering: You were in 88A on the upper deck. That seat looks good because there is no one behind you. But, do you have noise from the galley behind you? Or, since you are near the stairwell, does that produce any noise? Thank you for your help!

I agree if you're in biz class then a 7 hr flight is too short! We are in the West so it's a real treat if we can book a biz class from SFO to Europe direct cus it's 11-13 hrs so plenty of time for a food, sleep and a movie. If in coach then 7 hrs is pretty much how long a BOS-SFO flight takes so that seems easy-peasy to me.

If I was flying in that business class I could stay in the air for a very long time. Problem is I fly coach because of company rules so I cant wait to get where I am going fast. Coach should be relabeled Cattle Class. I remember the glory days of commercial flying so it saddens me greatly to see what it has become.

Here I am with the longest flight I've been on being 2 hours in economy. I never travel internationally, and I always drive when in the states. Flights are just SO EXPENSIVE. It has to be a good 17hr+ drive for flying to even be economical, and I hardly ever go farther than a 10hr drive. Oh well. Maybe someday

I flew upstairs in a BA B747-400. The business class seats were four across but not side by side. Two faced forward and two faced aft but all had easy aisle access without worrying about anyone else. That huge jet feels rather small when in the bubble. It was very quiet and that was terrific.

I just upgraded my ticket to business so I can fly upstairs! If I only get one flight on a 747, I'm okay blowing a little more cash so it's memorable
Edit: I was absolutely gonna ask to see the flight deck anyway, but now I can almost expect them to say yes!

I live only 20 minutes away from dulles and my house is perfectly lined up with how the planes go in for landing. It always puts a smile on my face when I see some of the wide bodies like the 777, 787, 747, a380, a330, and a350s. Dulles is such a nice airport to me.

When I was 7 years old I got to fly upstairs on a 747-400. Virgin Atlantic actually had one configured with Economy upstairs and two others with Premium Economy upstairs. and it's what turned me into an AvGeek to begin with. I will never top that flight.

i have only ever traveled in economy, i have had 2 14 hour flights, 4 9 hour flight 16 7 hour flights and way more short flights, my favs where the 9's, but that was because it was to japan and i love japan, so fav length? probs 8-15 hours

My son and daughter-in-law are stationed at Ramstein AFB. I looked at the first class prices on Lufthansa for a potential trip later this year. OMG is it pricey. I guess you get what you pay for.

I like Cathay Pacific from JFK to Hong Kong over the North Pole. It was 16 hours with the usual coming into Hong Kong 1 hour in-air tour, but that's Hong Kong.

Why not show a flight map that closely matches the actual flight - over Newfoundland, Ireland, and England, not the one you show (at 0: 20) going over France
reply

asa shortr as possible. the extra money spent on longer flights, with their good food, could have been used on the ground in a 5 star restaurant.
reply

I've flown on a 747-400 four times, from JFK to TLV on El Al. I can't wait to fly on the upper deck of a 747-800. Been my dream as a kid!

Flew upstairs on Lufthansa from Cairo to Frankfurt several times. Loved each trip. Actually wished it was a longer route.

It depends on my seat but if its a good seat I would like as long as I can and if its a bad seat shorter would be preferred
