Although if you are looking for scenery, I'm actually more fond of the California Zephyr (especially between Emeryville, CA and Denver, CO, although it goes all the way to Chicago, IL) and the Coast Starlight from Seattle WA to Los Angeles, CA. The former train Westbound trip has amazing daylight crossings of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains and Colorado's Rocky Mountains. The latter has amazing views of Puget Sound, the Columbia River, the mountains of Oregon, and the California Coast. On the other hand, if you are looking for punctual schedules. ride the Tokaido Shinkansen

Noel - Want some advice? I know you have ridden on Amtrak with your wife and kids in the roomettes and also the family rooms, but next time try getting adjoining deluxe bedrooms. There is a wall that slides open between (I believe between room B & C) that turns them into one big suite. They both have their own shower/toilet so you dont have to go down the hall for that. Also, when its time to put the kids to bed, they can go to their own room and you can then close the wall between the rooms, giving you and your wife some privacy. I too have two kids and we used to do this all the time. It worked out perfectly!

I have taken the empire builder from Williston to East Glacier and stayed overnight at the East Glacier lodge then returned the following morning with a flag stop of the east bound Empire builder back to Williston, Thought the trip was exceptional in Coach, large comfortable seats and massive windows. We did 81 mph on all the legs between towns, i think the trackage is rated for that speed. Remember well the old 4-8-4 at Havre Montana. Hit by a blizzard shortly after leaving East Glacier, visibilty dropped to a few feet. Williston is 5 hrs north of my home in South Dakota

AND now that the President (who loves Amtrak) has set aside money for Amtrak they are buying new coaches and updating the decor in all of them. Now we just have to get the freight train companies to FIX THEIR RAILS! The state of the rails in America is tragic.

I grew up in Shelby. Fun fact, that isn't the original Oil City Saloon. That bar used to be called Teagadens and the Oil City was on the left across the street and I know this because my parents owned the original Oil City Bar! The building is torn down now. Good to see the Oasis is still going strong as well. Fun fact number 2, those bars on the wrong side of the tracks! haha

This is a trip I have wanted to do for ages! Now that my brother and his family live in Seattle, I might have to check it out since they are frequent visitors to Spokane for my nephews appointments at Shriners Hospital. It would be a fun way to get back home to St. Louis (quick flight home from Chicago!

Cant wait to ride the empire builder from Portland to Chicago, then hop on the capitol lonited to Cleveland switch to smother capitol limited to Toledo then hop on a greyhound to Columbus, itll be a 4 day trip in coach butbim sure Ill sleep fine if I have a drink or 4 before bedtime loln

Amtrak! I rode one of those in 1998. We went from Arkanaas to Los Angelas, CA and then to Sacremento, CA. It was an amazing trip! I love Amtrak and would love to go again someday. The scenery is breathtaking cause you go through Colorado coming back.

Amtrak Train Service in Midwest virtually does not existence. I took short trip from St Louis to Kansas City, Kansas in 2017. The Dinning Car was pretty bleak, the bathroom not very clean. And motions of train on track made my stomach very queszy

I rode the Empire Builder out of Chicago. I boarded In Minneapolis, MN, and it took 38 hours to get to Spokane. It was awful. The cars were old and the employees were surly. This was in 1972 and I hated it. Never again, good riddance!

Unfortunately with the scheduling you're sleeping through the best scenery between Spokane and Glacier. But the plains have a vast starkness that is memorable especially if you come from a more densely populated place.

Quite dangerous to overload the outlet like that it's designed only for a shaver with a very low current draw (20-40w. I'm surprised anything charged at all. and that you didn't light to the train: )

In most advanced nations, this journey would take as little as 10-12 hours via fast train. But perhaps there is value in going slowly. It is not very practicable, though, with limited time.
