I've had the great good fortune of being able to taxi around an airfield in a Lanc and trying out all the various crew positions. My respect increased 10 fold at least following this experience. As you said, doing this in pitch darkness, 50 feet above the dams with the local residents doing their best to kill you is beyond belief.

Nice video. My Gramps was an engineer at Scampton during WW2, he worked on the Lancasters that did the raid. His job was to weld the bomb release mechanisms which allowed the bombs to rotate. He worked on many different planes but the Lancs were always his favourites. Couldnt stand Guy Gibson though, but thats another story!

When they were training there was an incedent where one Lancaster over took another on a practice run. Funny thing is over take is technicall wrong, he literaly under took the other lanc that was already down at 50ft. Imagine flying at 50ft in the night and a Lancaster flies underneath you from behind and overtakes you!

We went there to the Dam last year while living in Germany! When you are standing there, you can see just how difficult it was to break the wall. Sadly, several villages of civilians, mostly woman and children were swept away when the dam wall broke, some very sad stories at the visitor centre.

Another great video. If you enjoy watching Noels videos then go and make a small donation at the Justgiving page at the end of the video. Its a great way of showing appreciation for Noels videos whilst supporting a very worthy cause. Lets get that target smashed.

I glorified this raid as a child. Then as an adult I discovered it was simply thealmost pointless killing of women and children and POWs. It is glorified to this day by the British as some kind of amazing achievement. It did little to shorten the war.

Did you superimpose the rear plane photo over a front shot? The movement follows the landscape not the plane! Either that or you have a very close formation very stable drone. Enjoy all your videos so keep them coming

Awesome video! At 4: 00 in the bottom right corner you can see one of the Oil Spill 727s that I see all the time when they come in for maintenance at Lasham (my home base)

Another brilliant video. I'm really enjoying these new videos with you in the cockpit. I'm curious, how do you get video from underneath the plane?

My favourite fact about Doncaster Sheffield is that the runway is long enough for it to be designated a Space Shuttle emergency landing site!

I always enjoy your videos, Noel, but I would be grateful if you didn't take the Lord's name in vain. You don't really need to.

I wonder how many British people living fairly close to the practice dams worked out what was going on. I'd bet quite a few.
