As a cartographer, the reason Africa looks so small ''on the map'' is because the projection most people are exposed to in the global north is the Mercator. Mercator was designed for shipping in the Age of Sail and in presenting straight lines for the purposes of sea navigation, it distorts towards true north and south, so that the lines of latitude are a shorter distance apart at the equator and further apart at the poles. The result is that Africa is displayed as being geographically smaller than it actually is compared with places like the United States, Canada and Greenland. (Greenland is actually 14 times smaller than Africa as a continent, not as large as it appears on most maps)
Madagascar is around the same size as the UK and Ireland, and the main continental mass of Africa would actually comfortably fit the US, China, Japan, India, Eastern Europe, Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Portugal inside.
If you want a better idea of relative scale, the Gall-Peters projection is more realistic with relative size, though it flipping the script so the lines of latitude are further apart at the equator than the poles tends to vertically stretch the image of the continents towards the middle.
There is really no perfect 2D map projection. They all have limitations that are the result of trying to present a map of a globe on a flat surface.

Africa is such a DIRTY, corrupt, politically unstable continent. I would only go there with a tour group, where my security would be a bit more guaranteed, I reckon.
Noel, PLEASE DO NOT BE SO PASSIVE AGRESSIVE. Tell people be be far quieter, on a flight, if they are bothersome to you.
Your listeners can do nothing about your passenger complaints.
ONLY you can.
TELL PEOPLE THEY ARE BEING TOO DAMN INCONSIDERATE.
Stand your ground.
God knows I would do in a flash.
If anyone is banging on your seat, and you do not like that, TELL THEM OFF!
Let them, know in no uncertain terms, that you mean business!
And, as I've stated before. STAND YOUR GROUND.

Noel, the short Airspirit flight from Oliver Tambo Airport (JNB) to Nelspruit (MQP) Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport is a great trip. The airport is one of the nicest I've been to with straw roofs, you can get up close to the aircraft and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Lowveld, from the restaurants overlooking the airfield.

You make so much money yet don't want to pay extra for a window seat and always ask at the airport for a free one instead so you can't really complain when you don't get one. By the way if you slipped her a $20 she would have given you a window seat. Just the way it works in some countries.

I'm a little surprised Noel is so trusting most of his documents are on his cell phone! (yes, I see he often carries docs in a plastic folder too. It must be a travail to keep it fully charged! I find it so and I don't go on such complex trips as these.

Good lord i give you credit! Patience and humility of a saint! I seriously couldn't do Africa because of my NYC patience! But we have people like you, so we can watch the beauty of the magnificent continent from home! Thank you! Mille Grazie!

So good to see that even when it's going pear shaped at check in you maintain your composure. It always pains me to see people really going off at the ground staff/crew. Things go wrong, . so its good to see you just roll with it.

TBH the Electronic Toothbrush being take in Dakar makes sense, bcs it has a Lithium Battery in it, that you can't have in checked luggaage due to fire hasard, and not just in africa but most airlines have that as a policy.

Hi Noel
The shortest international flight is between St Gallen in Switzerland and Friedrichshafen in Germany. The connection operated by the Austrian carrier People's Viennaline takes 8 minutes.

I assume in some places a UK passport may be more useful than a USA passport, and vice versa. Although perhaps some other country's passport travels the globe easier! One wonders.

I am so sorry regarding your experience in Togo. I hope you felt better You need to keep some rehydration sachets. Water alone will not help since you loose salts etc. through sweat.

Always funny to see a traveller from the first world trying to come to terms with the less efficient and less palatial surroundings of less developed parts of the world.
reply

There's no problem.
The real problem for them is that you didn't open your wallet. Airports in Africa are notorious for problems. Only a handful of airlines are safe to fly.

This fellow always complains about each and everything. He should stop traveling to other countries and stick his bum in his own country and harvest potatoes and cabbages.
reply

Observation rather than a criticism. It's funny Noel goes to the most out-of-the-way 'exotic' places on obscure little airlines and then orders. a cheeseburger!

I enjoy watching business and first class experiences I will never get myself but the real pleasure is watching people go through flying discomfort for us.
