Insulate your bed. The dead air space under it isn't always enough. Pack some leaves under there or pine needles. You may want to consider using rocks and clay or mud to build up a fireplace around your fire pit with a bit of a chimney. This would make your crane useless but you could install a spit of sorts to hang your pots from. A friend and I tried to build a base camp in was little forest area we had around his house and we got a very spacious enclosure made that took us about 5 hours and a fire pit dug that was lined with rocks and we were slowly turning it into an oven with the clay from the creek below but we came back after a couple days and saw it was completely trashed. We figure it was a kid that walks his dog in those woods every few days because he had yelled at us for clear cutting the woods despite our shelter being made from dead fall from the woods we were building in and dead fall from the conservation park about a half kilometer away.

As a young child I lived and camped out most of the summers I The 1950s/60s and my grandad taught me how to keep the creepy crawly things at bay by using natural things around us, any how I thought Id share these things with you. Carry on making these videos makes me feel young again. MINTMint is a great herb that can be used in cooking and in drinks. It also deters ticks, fleas and other insects it will also help to keeps bugs at bay, it also has a clean scent with it. ROSEMARYRosemary is an evergreen herb, also great for cooking. It has a lovely smell to people, but ticks and fleas hate it. Wild garlicThis is also another great deterrent.

Keep your crane. Great idea. I would certainly add a spit system to compliment the crane if that is where you choose your cooking station is going to be. Great Vids, great work. I'm so glad you didn't go the Dakota fire pit, those are temporary firing systems (in my opinion, only one system: 2 holes connected by a tunnel, effective and hot, but you have to constantly feed the beast)I used to be a teacher as well. Noble profession, alot of frustration, isn't it?

Great to see you back out there Mike. Your comment about peoples shelters being trashed was unfortunately all too accurate. Mine got burned to the ground by some idiot. Nearly burned the supporting trees down with it. Unbelievable Would love to find a woods like yours. My favourite tree is the Scots Pine. Would suggest building a small fire reflector wall behind the fire. It worked wonders for me in minus 2 night temps last winter. Keep it up

I seem to be watching the backlog of videos in a random order but I am getting the whole picture and because I am too eager to click on first that pops up and no worries because they are all first class. a question. what would happen if all your tinder and wood was completely saturated. can a fire be lit? Are there any do's and don'ts in the forest. thanks Mike TA Outdoors wins best award on the net. whoooo.

Have you tried notching the ends of your stakes to help them sit together better when you stack them at right angles as well as where you do your lashings to add a little extra strength? The same sort of thing you see in log cabin building when they bring the corners together? Just a thought, love your videos especially the 1s you do with your dad, keep up the good work Cheers from Australia

me and some of my friends made a really good shelter with a fire pit and a wall and a look out but some people trashed it. they set the while place on fire which was dangerous. we made a new one witch is better and bigger also out of the way. your videos have inspired me to make another camp coz I really didn't feel like making a new one after that so thanks and keep on with the videos.

I enjoy your videos. just a little late coming to your chanel. you ask for advise and suggestions so here goes. the masonry stones around your firepit. I know here in the states, concrete will pop and break if it gets too hot. you might wanna swap those out for maybe some bedrock of some kind, maybe some slate shards or something before you do any major fire.
