NEBRASKA: Forgotten Rural Towns FAR OFF The Interstate I was working in this exact area over the summer! Had a job flying drones over fields to image crops for the famers of the area and got to see all these small towns firsthand. Very neat places! I stayed in Stanton Nebraska for about two months during that time, probably one of my better summers that I can remember. Verdigre is probably one of the most interesting Ive been to, but theyre all nice places, especially not far off Highway 275 and the other local state highways. Watch out for the sand out west! The minimum maintenance roads I was driving on may as well have been play sand pits, seemingly endless depth of loose soft sand. Even had cactuses in some places!

Sitting here watching these videos of beautiful old towns with houses around $100k or less, scratching my head wondering why the hell I live in a small city in New Zealand where the average salary is similar at about $65k but the median house price is over $900k and it costs over $150 to fill the tank of the car. Would be interested to know what the price of food is, with the weekly grocery bill in NZ for a family of 4 being between $400-$500. Might be time to seriously consider emigrating.

I think you do a very fine job in giving people an insight into what America is really like now. Your videos will be looked in the the future
to reflect the 2020s. One recommendation: It would be useful to learn more about the economics in each town. This will give us a deeper understanding of each community. Who are major employers, for example.

The Dalmatian reminded me of something: The fire dept. on Wilson avenue (Chicago) used to have a real Dalmatian that would sit on top one of the trucks and howl like crazy along with the sirens when they were making a run. He has since died and they have a little marker outside the station where he is buried, with his name Whisky on it.

There's parts of Nebraska and Colorado that are just desolate, even along the interstate. You have to be really careful about planning gas and bathroom breaks. And Colorado, from the state line w/Nebraska to Denver Pathetic lack of rest stops. For such a rich state, you'll find better road services in Iowa or Nebraska.

How are they earning a high income
There's nowhere to get a high paying job. They can't be retirees if the average median age is in the 30's and 40's. Working at Monas, Jims Food, Monas, Dollar General or the Cardinal Express gas station isn't going to pay that much. :) Nice tour thanks for posting these videos.

At the beginning of the vid when Lord Spoda mentioned these towns in Nebraska that had high income levels for towns that seem to have not enough high income businesses. It made me think that many people in such towns are either heavenly invested in stocks or have valuable lands that are rented out.

Really enjoy your videos. I was born in Fairberry Nebraska. Family movied to Colorado when I was two. I have family back there there. I will tell you, most people in those small towns are farm people trucking and so on. Most all very independent hard working intelligent people.

Runza's are ground beef, cabbage, onion, salt and pepper. Heavy on the pepper! When my kids were in high school I would make 4-5 dozen at a time and freeze them, individually wrapped. Great healthy snack for growing teenagers. Next time try the smothered chicken.

It's interesting to see the vastness and large spacing between all of the houses. Here in the UK, unless you live in a rural area, houses are mostly terraced and semi-detached. You feel like you live with your neighbours. Their house is joined onto yours.

I don’t know why this popped up but I just took a trip to a small town in Nebraska, also the last week of June thru July 6th. The town I went to only had 300 people, we had to stay in the next town over Aurora. The farmers do a pretty good $.

That high Hispanic population in Wakefield is due to that egg facility. I've been into many egg places in iowa and it's all Hispanic for the most part. They don't speak English so I'm guessing they are all 1st generation to the area.

Most of those towns have hire incomes because of retired farmers. They don’t buy fancy places but they sell the farm and move into town. Was raised in small town NE, lots of retired farmers. Check a cafe in the morning lol

For those who wonder what people here do for entertainment I looked up racetracks and there's 21 ovals and dragstrips in Nebraska and probably a few places for motorcycle racing and tractor pulling as well.

I would hate to be stranded in those areas with no gas stations in sight, maybe GPS will tell how far to the next station, my car uses little gas but my goodness it only has an 11 gallon tank.

Yes in the real non liberal world your dog can roam freely, you can smoke inside anywhere, because it is called being free which is something most people have forgotten how to be
reply

In the mid to late 70s, my family were coming back from a family campout and the bugs were so thick, they had people set up on both sides of town cleaning windshields.

When you are half way eating a Runza you wonder why people think they are so good. But then on your last bite, you wish you had more. They definitely grow on you.

Glad you figured out how to pronounce Pierre, which as you now know is pronounced as peer not in the traditional way the word spelled as Pierre is pronounced.
reply

I've yet to see you comment on police presence in these small towns. In fact, I can't remember seeing a single policeman in any of the videos. Just a comment.
reply

You must try and interact with the locals . That would add a lot of perspective to the narrative and make it more interesting for the viewers .

Love the cobblestone / brick streets in some of these old towns / villages. Still looking forward to when the Roadtrip comes to Western NY.
