My Favorite Tent For 2021 (plus My Favorite Lower Budget Options)

I've have had several shelters, and I'll tell you what. For the money, weight and quality, the 3f ul lanshan1 is ridiculously good. I was caught in a torrential downpour in the mountains of North Carolina. By far the worse storm I have ever been in. Solid, heavy rain for 10+hours. There was so much rain that my shoes in the vestibule were literally floating in more than an inch of water. There was a half inch or more of water flowing under part of the tent. You could see the tent floor moving up and down on its own.
When I pitched it, I made sure to get it as tight as possible, and also adjusted the outer walls down as far as they could go.
I woke up in the morning completely dry, even though I was laying in a giant puddle.
I could have taken the time to clear another spot at camp for a new tent pad, but with rain starting to fall I wanted to get my shelter up asap, so I gambled on whether the lanshan1 would keep me dry. It passed with flying colors. I can't say the same for some big box name brand shelters I have

I would normally of said the Six moons lunar solo was my favorite 1 person backpacking tent. I m 6 2 and 215lbs and I can take my 6yr old or my 100lb dog with no real issue. However it may not be a cold weather tent. I hiked 20 miles of Mohican state Forrest this weekend and on Friday night the temperatures got down to around 12 degrees. At 4 am I was woken up by a very loud sound. The fabric in the vestibule actually tore in two separate locations. I couldn t find anything that could of fallen and hit the tent. My best guess is the fabric froze and that combined with the very tight pitch I usually prefer must of caused a failure. Luckily It didn t rain on Saturday night although some snow of course made its way through the holes. Will contact six moons on Monday to see about getting it repaired. It wasn t necessarily a defect but rather user error so we will see what can be done about it. The material is their newer sylpoly which I liked because it didn t stretch when wet but I wonder about the tear strength now.

It s interesting to hear that water came through your DCF without an obvious hole. The same thing happened to my zPacks Blast 26. That rucksack was brilliant and I used it a lot but the fabric in the roll top area eventually gave up and seemed to become porous. It took a lot of hiking to make the rucksack fail and I am not criticising zPacks but DCF appears to have a life span. My guess is that rolling and unrolling the top of the rucksack caused the failure of the matrix so I doubt whether it would be an issue for the walls of tents. At least, I hope so because I really like my Duomid and can t wait for lockdown to end so that I can get back into the mountains.

Great cover thumbnail) picture of you lying on the ground between tents: o). .. I do fold and roll my Duplex. I fold it in half (head to foot) then I fold it in quarters and then roll it up. It keeps the excessive wrinkles out of the fabric. I also carry a piece of a synthetic shammy to soak up condensation but I hardy ever get condensation because I leave two doors open even in freezing cold. Unless it's raining or foggy or freezing AND windy.

I paid over 400 for my B/A Copper Spur ul2- it weighs less than 3 lbs, has plenty of room, sets up fast, and is JUST rugged enough to not feel too delicate to hike with. I m 6 1 220 with a pack weight of 35 lbs. with water.
400 is a lot of money- 1000 for a Tiger Wall? According to Big Aggy s website, that s 35 per ounce of weight loss. Which makes sense- if you carry 550 in one dollar bills your whole hike.

I like Big Agnes tents, I feel they make them very well and it fits my needs plus comfortable for me being under 5ft tall. So many tents are too big for me.
I m not a fan of Zpacks because I met them at the last trail days and they dismissed me probably because I m short but when I asked them questions they were very arrogant to deal with so I ll never buy anything from them. oh well.

I love my Big Agnes Tiger Wall 2, but it should be noted that it is NOT the Carbon version. It's the original version introduced about 3 years ago. Sturdy, about 3. 5 lbs total. The two doors are my favorite feature! I backpack with a 75 lb dog, and this keeps me from crawling over her to get out, and also frees her to look out her own door during the cold mornings!

Tiger wall 2. Weight vs cost was the most reasonable choice to my budget. I might consider the duplex if they made the door zip from the bottom and not from top so your not having to constantly crawl on/over it. That pole add on option seems like a nice feature though. Thanks for your thoughts and reviews.

Love the duplex, my gf got me one last year with a garmin inreach, I was using a six moon design poncho tarp with big net which worked really good for me, even on a windy day it stood up, I m still planning on using it if I need the extra space in my pack but for now the duplex is my go to
