Ford's 2024 Ford F150 PowerBoost Isn't Selling On Hybrid Fuel Economy, And That's Fine By Me

2003 saw the first hybrid 1/2 ton truck in America. It flopped. Fun fact: that hybrid Silverado had 42V electric power steering, so there Cybertruck! (Kidding of course. Anyway, the reason it failed is the reason that Ford's PowerBoost hybrid has succeeded, well, the inverse is the reason to be specific. You see, the Chevy Silverado Hybrid (the 2009 one, because the 2003 was a micro hybrid at most, and that's being generous) gave a fairly small economy benefit, was wicked expensive (a $7, 500 option adjusted for inflation, and didn't do much other than improve your MPGs by 1-2. The F-150 hybrid however, that's a different beast because the hybrid is the same price as the 5. 0L V8, AND the same as the regular 3. 5L turbo V6 while giving you up to 7. 4 kW of onboard power inversion to power your house, well pump, arc welder, job site, whatever. This F-150 seems to be selling not on the small MPG improvement (which is small) but on the promise of more capability. I'm intrigued.

We absolutely love our 22 F150 Powerboost, Lariat 502A.
There’s been recalls but they’ve all been nothing burgers. Recalls have been minor in nature and have been completed during routine maintenance at our local dealership and I was provided a courtesy vehicle. You can drive this vehicle like you stole it with with 437HP and 570LB-Ft of torque or hypermile it to get insane gas mileage. We regularly use the propower onboard for dry camping. I liked ours so much I have one for one of our businesses and I’ve ordered a second Powerboost for personal use. Waiting in stop and go traffic or a drive thru is no problem. a/c runs from the battery pack and you’re sitting not using any gas.
It’s a fantastic truck and has been dead nuts reliable for 60, 000 kms.

The optional bigger wheels you have on the your King Ranch effect the ride in negative way. The base King Ranch wheels or 20's and ride much better than the optional wheels, which I would skip its a $1, 000 option for those big wheels. The King Ranch has adjustable shocks as standard but those optional larger wheels really hurt the ride. I drove both a King Ranch with the optional wheels and without. The King Ranch without the optional big wheels rode allot smoother and had better NVH too. I agee the Hybrid is the way to go its like the swiss army knife of trucks.

It's almost the killer feature. There are some Ford disadvantages, but those are balanced if not outweighed by the hybrid fuel economy and functionality. Now if they were to double the HP and 4x the battery (or allow the battery to be expanded aftermarket or dealer) it would be the category killer feature. Imagine in town driving all electric, with the 700 mile highway range. Could probably even gear the transmission higher (take out the bottom two gears) because the electric could do it.

I wish all hybrids had the 7. 2kw inverter. Other than some additional cost, it seems like a no brainer to use it as an alternative to a very expensive whole house generator since 7. 2kw is mroe than enough to power a house in an emergency.
This is especially true with EVs. Most have the more energy capacity than even several Tesla powerwalls. It's an absolute waste not being able to harness that battery to backup your house and work with your solar panels if you have then.

I would love a white Lariat with the blackout package. It's such a good looking truck. I assume the hybrid GM is coming with the next gen. I would note you have to get at least a Lariat to get auto AWD and I dumped my 2016 XLT not because it wasn't a nice truck, but the ice where I lived in Minnesota made it a problem. Ford needs to make that standard on all trims and they'd sell more trucks.

My 2021 Powerboost - just a Lariat with a few additional options - has been outstanding. Exactly in line with the EPA's 24/24/24 mileage projection, a great road car and, it's most appreciated feature, the transmission automatically controls descents on 7% grades when towing our 6, 000# trailer. Just renewed its Blue Cruise, which is also enjoyable.

Great video, Alex. Powerboost is available in the XLT also. I have a 24' XLT powerboost I ordered and received in May. One other interesting thing is Ford changed the operation of the powerboost a bit for 24'. Engine now spins up through the transmission instead of a typical starter. Seems a bit smoother in operation vs my buddy's 23' powerboost.

Interestingly, my Dad worked for Humble Oil on the King Ranch many moons ago. Decades actually. King Ranch was really about to be divided up before Humble exploration found viable fields on the property. Everyone else knows the King Ranch today because of Humble Oil, and in small part, my Dad.

Basically one of these and a Lightning also w a 7. 2 kWh plug should be good for a country cabin to make it through any situation since the hybrid could power the Lightning if it’s out of juice or use for fuel runs for a house generator or to use AS a stand alone 2nd generator also.

My 2021 is doing great, a few recalls that were quick fixes. Around 20mpg average over 3 years, and giving my driving, about 20% of miles are on electric. The 7. 2kW powered the basics during the hurricane earlier this month. Ran over 30 hrs nonstop and just under 1/2 tank.

Powerboost is only NOT available in XL trim for 2024 and is available in XLT and above. Great video and as a 2023 PowerBoost owner I could not agree with you more, it’s baffling others have not followed suit. I absolutely love the efficiency and functionality.

50k on my 2021 powerboost Lariat, now 8k on my new 2023 powerboost Lariat. 21 mpg average overall, and the 7. 2 kw generator is hilarious for what I've run on it. It's crazy to me that Toyota didn't bring that tech to their hybrid max Tundra.

One of my work colleagues brought a MY24 F150 XLT Hybrid and he loves it. Our office is in an urban area but he likes to go camping, cook on site and also play games on his PC in his camper, so the onboard generator is exactly what he is looking for.

Picking up our '24 Lariat Blackout Fx4 HEV tomorrow as it happens! Was surprised how good it was on a test drive. Will be our solution for boondocking and return avg fuel economy similar to our 1/2 ton diesel. Was waiting for this review from you!

My only gripe with the powerboost is its only paired with the 3. 5tt. I am waiting for a 2. 7tt powerboost. I don't need the extra power or torque, I want the extra fuel economy. The 2. 7 is also fully capable of being a 7. 2kw generator.

Alex, I'm curious - does the F150 have an hours-of-use feature to let you know when to change oil since if you're using the motor as a generator on a worksite You're not adding miles but are adding wear.

I like the new grill. I like the interior.
Brown plastics are always better than black plastics.
I've always preferred the competition over the F-150, but this one I can choose over the competition.

People who have the means of plugging in at home and don't need to tow long distances are really missing out by choosing the hybrid over the Lightning. The EV ownership experience is so much better.

I am really excited about the Ram Ramcharger coming out, that seems like the best solution. Also the early Tundra's had some problems putting in mildly, I think I'd choose the Ford betwen those to.

My problem is none of the car buying websites list this as a feature and it’s a pita to search for a truck. Related, none of the car buying sites let you search for the larger battery in the lightning.
