2026 Subaru Solterra Review - Subaru Fixed Almost Everything For 2026

Subaru got quite a bit of criticism (and rightly so) for its foray into EVs in America. It was comfortable and quirky, but the range was unremarkable and the changing speeds were glacial. For 2026, that's all changed because we get almost an entirely new Solterra. A new battery gives it more capacity and faster charging, new motors and inverters dramatically improved efficiency and range, and the interior gets some updates to make it. well, less weird frankly. Here's why we don't talk about reliability much: And resale value Same thing:

I picked up a 25 BZ4x XLE in July when Toyota had the super cheap lease deals and it was one of the best car purchases ive ever made.
Work from home, drive 50-100 miles / week
Charge at home on Level1 from 11pm-7am cost in NY state is $0. 75 - $0. 90 per night of charging with 6-7. 5kwh of charge
For anyone that works from home or has a super short commute, if you have a 2nd car for long distance these things are a no brainer even for a 25 with the slower charge rate and less range

I like a lot of the improvements, but it's still a waste of area. It has a bigger footprint than a Forester (1. 3 longer, 1. 2 wider, but utility closer to a Crosstrek/Impreza because of the excessively sloped rear. Subaru needs to just EV the Forester. I have no desire to trade my Forester XT for a Solterra with 8-16% less cargo capacity and built so cheaply they don't even include a glovebox or rear wiper.

Good updates to the Solterra, having fixed pretty much all its negatives from before. Bodes well for the Trailseeker which I expect will be much of the same specs, but with a more wagon-like profile. Potential replacement for our old Outback given that the new Outback is just not our cup of tea (and long distance range isn't as much of a concern for us.

Alex, you are 5’11. Ok, it’s fine to round up especially when you have shoes on. Lol. Love your reviews. You somehow keep form with your deadpan humor and are not obnoxiously snarky. You can regurgitate facts and knowledge and again are able to keep focused probably due to your pace and style of speaking. Keeps the viewers attention on the subject.

A very helpful review. We were long time Subaru owners but traded our 2013 Forester for an Ioniq 5 three years ago. Next year we’re considering trading in our Tacoma. We’re keeping the Ioniq 5 but want a second vehicle with the off pavement capability of our old Foresters. The 2026 Solterra and the 2026 Rivian R2 are both contenders.

I have issues with the led front lights design for Rivian but it is miles more stylish than this crap. It looks like Subaru just dialed it in to push people to its ICE lineup.
Talking about improvements, R2S fixes many of the styling and other issues from R1S.
Who came up with these beautiful quarter panels and fenders on this car

reply

Alex, Call me crazy if you like, but I think BEV fans will keep buying them without a taxpayer supplied discount. On the other hand, tariffs may be an insurmountable barrier for many car companies including the purveyors of BEV and ICE vehicles.
Let's revisit this conversation in 12 -18 months.

3: 00 - this is matte plastic to make it easier to keep good looking over time
Uh, that's just bare plastic. don't make it sound fancy.
And that spoiler Does absolutely nothing. It's purely aesthetics.
This car salesman is good at what he does: misinform the uninformed.

range below some of the competitors Remember Solterra AWD standard. Only Model Y is longer ranged in AWD trim
Also Alex, in the awd version front and rear motor is the same output. Even the pre-refreshed version has the same electric motor front and rear in awd trims

This looks like last generations Kona EV to me in the front. I like the way my 2023 looks better than this. Also where are the Fog Lights! This is a Subaru after all! Where did my active aero on the front bumper go
I will say however the updated interior is superior.

I have 1 answer for you. Prologue
Edit: I understand people are frustrated with it not being an actual Honda, but the platform is reletively solid and specs are pretty much 10% better across the board compared to the Solterra! FOR ALMOST HALF PRICE these days

Great timing, what with the tariffs, the subsidies stopping (thx Trump for slowing the fraud and waste of my taxpayer money, and a general downtick of EV sales. These will be dirt cheap next year, once they have some lot time on them.

Some think 150kw is slow. Except Hyundai doesn't charge faster on NACS. Both Solterra and Ioniq 5 takes 30 minutes to charge. Only on a very rare 350kw charger will Hyundai charge faster so irrelevant for most people

Love the improvement and the lack of a frunk allows easy access to the 12 volt battery, fluids, etc. My wife likes the Toyota / Subuie offerings, but is totally turned by the bizarre decision to delete the glove box.
reply

It's almost like Toyota/Subaru came out with the Solterra/bZ4X quickly, knowing the range wasn't that great, just so they could have a Model Y competitor because they never change something this fast.

The dual wireless phone charging slabs take up so much console space. The Prius solution to have a slanted vertical slot is much better. I love my phone but i don't want my car to be a temple to it.
reply

Larger electric motor in front seems on par with Toyota or carry over to EV/shared EV. All the hybrids with eAWD have less powerful motor in rear. Rav4 Prime is like 180hp front 50hp rear motors
reply

I like how Subaru flattens the top of the steering wheel to better facilitate seeing the cluster display. Toyota BZ still has a round steering wheel which makes viewing a bit trickier.
reply

Would love to have the new motors and range but not worth upgrading. Maybe if the interior was better upgrade. Those 2 giant chargers are just ugly and never found one to be usable.
reply

not with the charger up front, out for me. I get what they did, but it is not how my garage can handle it. Now, if I backed in each time maybe, but I do not want to do that.
