Good Looks, Great Value 2020 Nissan Sentra

With sharp styling inside and out, good fuel economy, and a boat-load of standard safety features, the Nissan Sentra is a compelling compact sedan. If you're shopping for a compact car that won't break the bank, and you don't need the extra power you find in the turbocharged competition, the Sentra should be at the top of your list

It REALLY amazes me how many people take the time to comment on EVERY Nissan review about how crappy the CVTs are. Yes there was a time that they were failing prematurely and the complaints are not at all baseless. BUT SHUT UP ALREADY (Let's not forget some of those failures were due to lack of following maintenance recommendations) All of the new cars Nissan have released recently have been pretty solid products. I personally haven't heard of the latest gen. Altima having any CVT issues. It's been on the road long enough that if there was a premature failure problem, they would have started popping up by now. This Sentra is 1000x better than the last gen. and is actually competitive WHILE offering a good value proposition and looks damn good and overall is just a more substantial car. Notice there were no comments made about cheap materials inside. Yes Nissan is cutting costs, but it seems they are doing it in ways that really don't hinder the products. like not having LED tailights on this and the Altima. sux but I'd rather that than cheap interior materials or skimping on important parts. Also they are saving by simplifying their lineups. Pretty much it seems that people can't simply give credit where it's due. if they can't find fault, hark back to the past. CVTs. bahumbug. See it on the rental lots. blah blah blah Very similar to when Hyundai/Kia got their act together and started making good cars, but everyone just had to remind everyone of their past. Things change. sometimes even for the better.

Alex, your new video format is fantastic Very sharp & professional You have always been my favourite technical 'go-to' reviewer. You're precise and thorough. I've been waiting for you to review the Nissan Sentra SR for a while, as I just bought one, (site-unseen too, based on my positive experience with the Nissan brand. I won't actually be taking delivery of it for a month from now or so, and now seening you have pretty much confirmed my reasoning for buying a Sentra SR, I'm even more satified I made the best choice. Thanks for that, and all your great reviews They provide the viewer with invaluable information when shopping for a new vehicle.

I can get the Forte EX or GT with more features than the Sentra SR. It lacks wireless charging, ventilated seats, 6 way adjustable passenger seating, which most competitors(Sentra) offers 4-way adjustable seating, rear seat vents, ambient lighting, and LED tail lights. Sentra could have added LED tail lights to give it more sportiness look instead cheaping out with incandescent. Same thing with the higher trims Altima. Overall, I will trust Hyundai/KIA IVT(CVT) engine over the Sentra. IVT engines are in-housed engineer built. Sentra CVT uses JAXCO parts which is manufactured from a 3rd party.

I think the car looks great. But I would not buy one. It would be nice if Nissan offered a manual. Because their CVT has one of the reputations in the business for those who care. To be fair to Nissan, I have decided not to buy any car with a CVT. In my research, all of the brands that offer CVT are having some trouble with them. Manual transmission are very hard to find and if you find one you might have a choice of one car. So I only have a choice of a couple cars not all sedans. All the best deals are on CVT cars. I am most likely have to buy a used car from a private seller

Personally dropping the manual option from value options like the Sentra is a miss-step, 1000 off the MSRP is a serious bit of cash in this price range and mostimportantly gives buyers an option other than the CVT transmission. Mechanically 2017+ models with a CVT should be fine but Nissan really hurt their image with it's initial introduction. Other than that I think Nissan did a great job with the Versa and Sentra refreshes, the only thing I really want to see from the Sentra is a more powerful entry with an SR trim.

For me, the biggest concern in this segment is transmission options. The only option for automatic in almost every car is a CVT which still, even a decade after it became widely used, is not a reliable transmission. The small turbo engines also suffer with reliability concerns, even the Honda. If you're just looking to lease for 3yrs then return, reliability doesn't matter, but if you want to buy it and keep it, the Mazda3 is the best combo of driving dynamics, interior quality and long term reliability.

Re 2nd Row Headroom chart. Am I nuts or is your chart inverted? Usually the larger numbers are at the top, like the Combined Headroom chart, no? Just a bit confusing at first glance. Great review of a nice cheap car. Went to see one at my local dealer and the salesman drove a 2020 VERSA up and started to tell us all about the new Sentra. I let him go on for a few minutes before correcting his mistakes. He said, Ooops. Oh well, he was a FNG.

I like the design, except for the needlessly large grille - but that is something most modern cars suffer from. It just feels so pretentious, because you know that only 20 - 30% of it is functional. But what breaks it for me is the CVT. If it had a manual option, I might be on board. But I know I'm in the minority with that opinion - the average car buyer probably doesn't mind (as long as it's reliable. and that's fine.

Questions. How will it sell? How reliable? With Nissan cutting costs like crazy, I am dubious about their cars. Their trucks I have more confidence in. The Frontier and the Titan, but the Titan needs to go the rest of the way if it is to compete. The cars have a much more way to go. Infiniti looks good but the core Nissan cars are a stay away for me. Your mileage may vary.

Toyota CVT, Hyundai / Kia IVT, Ford Fusion Hybrid CVT -- would buy, no problem. Nissan CVT -- NO WAY, too unreliable. My sister's Nissan minivan with CVT utterly failed only weeks after the warranty expired, no consideration from Nissan. So expensive to replace, they got rid of it and got a Toyota Highlander instead.
