2023 Toyota Tacoma Review Living On Borrowed Time

We all know there's a new Taco in the wings, but exactly when it'll land is anyone's guess right now. While we wait for Toyota's re-invention of their successful mid-size truck let's answer the question on all of our minds: is it really that good? Right: Alex, Tacoma may be living on borrowed time but it is certainly NOT living on borrowed money. When it comes to my bank balance, I might borrow money to buy a 4Runner coupled with a handy utility trailer not a Tacoma. Am I the only one pining for a simple, single cab Hilux with a manual transmission and the tried and true 2. 7 truck engine?

Strange cab. A squat low cab made for simeons. Not really for humans. Drivetrain is never going to break. I sat in one and thought this was a 4/5th scale prototype, and that odd seating arrangement. The new one hopefully is made for humans, but with drivetrains that are the reliable Toyota hallmarks. Being a Toyota fan for almost 60 years, this is the oddball. It is my favorite truck I don't want to sit in. Give me a more vertical spec'd Land Cruiser Truck. If I am going to be slow I want a more meaningful truck. The competition is better in all things except reliability. Heck give me an updated FJ and give it a chance to sell a ton. Even an FJ truck would be fun too. Twin Turbo 4 cylinder 4X4. 10 speed automatic. Or 6 speed manual. This generation Tacoma makes sacrifices that its reliable drivetrain can no longer justify.

The 3. 5 is kind of a dud in that heavy platform. No power until revs are screaming. It was a parts bin motor used in the Camry. Toyota knew they were sales leader and could get away with it for a few years. The manual trans is geared lower and a bit more tolerable with the 3. 5 than the slushbox auto. A 2. 4 turbo should be better in the next gen.

F 150 owner here but Fairly id say the Frontier ( besides parking issue now ) is bout as Reliable. See many many old models and news ones out there. Fair you said new ones but most say much on it aint really new so. Just my opinion.

The larger trucks are too wide for my parking area. The quality and reliability are second to none which is why I just picked one up with all of the features I wanted including a 6 bed. I expect to have it a very long time.

If you don't keep your truck long, then this not for you. It not the best midsize seller for a good reason. You don't need all tech for a good working/fun truck. Just a straight forward and reliable one will do.

This push for Turbo engines equals less reliable. If turbochargers were the ticket than Toyota would have done it 30yrs ago. They had turbos back then. That 22reT was never as long lived as the N/A 22re

I would rush to buy a base one under 25k. if they offered a Manual for the 2. 7L 4 Cylinder, still.
I thought TRD sport could be had with a Manual?

Driving position was one of the reasons we didn t buy a Tacoma, also the many complaints regarding the engine/transmission incompatibility for towing

If new vehicle prices weren t so overpriced one would have a nice down payment on the new and better 2023 canyon with the equity in their taco.

Considering that Toyota will absolutely screw up the next generation Tacoma and 4Runner, you better hurry and get the remaining ones
reply

reliability will only get you so far. It's lazy, almost insulting, how ancient some of the vehicles in Toyota's lineup are
