2021 Hyundai i30 N review: 2021 Audi S3 review Shaun: The awesome Civic Type R keeps winning track battles but haters/Fan boys keep making excuses: -yeah but, but. -. Just accept that the Type R is a track weapon! That being said, it's not all about numbers - and a front wheel drive manual isn't as quick in a straight line from a standing start compared to dual-clutch auto AWD, we know that; you can't have it all - but the Type R is also a fantastic car to drive on the road. These battles are just a bit of fun - although, it is great to see a car you own do so well at them - but they are also an indication as to how well they go on the road. The CTR is great on the road, handles well, is so precise, comfortable and plenty quick. And engineering masterclass. And that gear-shift is outstanding. I couldn't care less if a car is front, rear, or AWD, it's how it drives etc that's important. If you prefer other cars. Great! If you want an AWD dual-clutch so you can race people at traffic lights. Great! Enjoy. The CTR is a great car to drive. The end.

I've been lucky enough to own a 2019 Type R, a 2020 S3 and currently own the new i30n (manual. The S3 was very quick in a straight line, and lauching it was insane. But day to day, it was a horrible car to live with. And I got rid of it after 6 months. I would have loved to get another Type R, I really loved the car and it was so much fun. But at the time of looking, there wasn't one in the country. But I am loving the i30n. Its so much fun to drive, great day to day. And, somewhat rarely these days, sounds great.

Notice how Steve is being literally bounced out of the seat down the straight by the i30n, whereas he isn't in the other two.
When trading my 2014 Focus ST in 2019 I went in to buy an i30n following the rave reviews. until I test drove it, the suspension in any mode was ridiculous. bounce bounce bounce, ridiculous, great hot hatches ride the bumps and mop them up to a degree, not try to pummel the road into submission like the i30n, hugely overrated car

There are many straight acceleration sections on that track circuit. Therefore, a vehicle with high engine output (power) has an advantage in lap time. So, the i30n, which has the lowest engine output, seems to be a great vehicle with the most kinematically set-up. If. the engine output of the i30n was the same as the Sijik Type r with 300-320 horsepower. the i30n would have the fastest lap time. I think the i30n is more technically good and nice car.

Tests should be done from a standstill at the finish line and to go for 2 laps (and then get the average), that's more fair, as passing through the finish line at speed can vary depending on the car/driver, unless when passing the speed is the same for all cars, which may be the case but I dont know.
Nevertheless, the Type R is king, no matter what!

I've driven the i30n and the S3. The hyundai was hands down the better and smile inducing car to drive on the road. The S3 was quick but felt bland and uninteresting in comparison. If I owned either, I would take the hyundai for a drive just for the enjoyment of it. The Audi I would drive because I needed to get somewhere.

Would love to own a Civic Type R, but in Germany these cars are priced WELL above their list prices; it would cost me around 44k- to buy one, but the Hyundai, despite having a similar list price, can be had for 34-35k-, which is already stretching my budget.

but what about options and trimline that highly compromise on weight?
hyundais usually are fully equiped with options in their basic trimlines that are elsewhere only found in higher trimlines.
track time is one thing but daily usability another.

The Civic here is definitely the best drivers car, but I was looking for an auto, something that wasn't designed by a teenager and a car that I could order and not have to wait a year for so I ended up getting the i30 N DCT and love every bit of it.

Audi S3 not your first choice car to take to a track but impressive nevertheless, Honda will take some beating with the civic but I don't think we've seen the last of Hyundai hopefully before the world turns into a big electronic mess
