Just a quick note to those intending grabbing a UV light.
Not all UV lights are created equal.
Firstly, there's the _power_ of emitted light (Yep. a 100W light will throw more light than a 1W light. Pretty obvious huh)
Far more important though is the wavelength. We all know that a RED light is RED and doesn't emit a lot of blue light (Yep, that's wavelength.
However, UV light covers a fairly broad spectrum of wavelengths. (Just like 'visible light' covers all the wavelengths from red to blue.
THIS UV torch is rated as having a wavelength around 390nm and that is BARELY just in the UV 'range' (which is why we can SEE it so easily)
This is classified as UV-A and we get a whole bunch of this from the sun (along with a decent bunch of UV-B)
There's ALSO something called UV-C, and this stuff is quite nasty (it literally will 'dive bomb' the DNA in your cells. Thankfully, our atmosphere filters out the UV-C that comes from the sun. However, there ARE UV-C light bulbs out there and these are quite dangerous. (They often carry the term 'germicidal' as they're used to kill bugs.
NEVER use a 'germicidal' UV-C light source for finding HVAC leaks (unless you actually want to destroy your eyes)
UV-A (and to some extent, UV-B) is FAR safer, but it's still not 'ideal'. (Yep, that's why sunscreen got invented. To stop the majority of UV-B and UV-A from reaching our skin)

Eric, Don't know how to contact you, but a question I have wanted to ask and seeing that you did this tool review thought to ask now.
I am a retired aerospace engineer that loves working on my cars. I hate it when I follow the wiring diagram and discover that when the wiring enters the PCM, it is impossible to diagnose any further. So, could you do something to provide a DIY some advice on purchasing a decent but affordable bi-directional scan computer. What should one pay, what to look for, maybe what to stay away from. I know the addage that you get what you pay for, but often one can pay high dollar and not get what you paid for. I suspect many DIYers would appreciate some advice in this area. Thanks

Eric, I do enjoy allowing your viewers' DIY'ers to share in your knowledge and choice of tools. I have 2 scopes on a rope test lights including the mini long nose Vice Grip one that is An Astro tools example. I am a former retired industrial mechanic/ machine operator with the Coleman Company (coolers, stoves, lanterns) and developed a range of tools for my job for minor repairs and adjustments and such. I was wondering if you were ever a street Machine or Hot Rodder, or motorcyclist too. Please continue to share in your personal collection of tools I'm sure it would be interesting to us all out here in the peanut gallery. Thanks, be well.

Eric you should have gotten the 365nm high definition UV Beast. It works better than the 385-395nm especially if you use tracer products ac dye. You need different wavelength uv flashlights depending on the brand of ac dye you use and how it flouresces (sp. The 385-395 has more visible light as the purple light you see compared to the 365nm and tracer products a/c dye which will only show the dye/green color with visible light there is no purple hue.

yo eric, those glasses aren't for seeing the dye better, they help filter out the uv to protect your eyes brother.
of course if you're not looking straight into the light then you should be fine but it's a safety thing they highly recommend using them while operating that thing.
yeah that is a great tool to use, i'm glad someone invented it, in the past working on a/c units was a royal pain finding the leaks like you said.

What's the best tool/way to inject some dye into an ac system I bought some guages and a vacuum pump a while back. My car would hold vacuum but when recharged it would stop working after about a week or so. Slow leak somewhere. I remember looking at some of the tracerline kits but they seemed a bit spendy for DIY and then you had to buy their refills. I'll give it another go if theres something SMA approved.

Theyre gonna sell alot of those! I just got a smoke machine, ancel S3000 on the prime day deals. Would it be possible to find an AC leak with a smoke machine Do you think the mineral oil/smoke could damage anything I dont think i will ever be able to afford an AC machine, the new gas also i heard is crazy expensive but if i could find the leak and fix whats broken then send it to a shop to refill.

Get this, it had a bad electrical connection! Something you would have spotted in about 8 minutes. Enough gloating and crowing. Thank you for your video, I have to go strut about now!

Back in my day we used a propane torch to find the elusive leak. It took a real man not to burn up the interior or engine compartment. I remember when the electronic leak detectors came out then the dye additives and the UV lights which were not bright at all. Your UV Beast would be in my tool box if I were still in the business, nice unit!

That light does look bright
Our light is one of the old school big blubs that came with a 8 mm movie camera size the hotter the bulb got the better it worked
First time ive seen a led style with a lens that was actually s uv light
Oh the glasses are for your eye protection so you dont get eye damage from the UV light

Wicked Awesome now your talking this Masshole is stuck in a GA World. Those 18650's are button top and have a circuit board in them to prevent over charging and discharging beyond the point of no return unlike those flat top 18650's. When they go off its the 4th of July and not in a good way.

i have a couple of different UV lights that do split duty for me not only looking for leaks in cars but also looking for uranium and other radioactive items in thrift shops and stuff as well as looking for florescent rocks i have a 395nm light and a 365nm light and that 365 is bright for its size

Funny story
I have a VEHICLE with AC problems.
I have gauges, pump, flusher all the needed tools not used in years.
I have two uv lights neither worked when I opened the boxbattery's not the problem.
Strange this vid came out as I was contemplating a new one.

Yeah, I watched you use sniffers before and wondered why you didn’t used a UV light. I used many different Lights over the years. The Blue Point is the one I have used for over twenty years. Very bright and compact. It has a very long cord and hooks to the cars battery. I still have it.

Be extraordinarily careful with lithium ion batteries especially run in series. Extremely dangerous if not managed well. Also never purchase inexpensive ones. Quality control in their manufacture is critical. Japan is a good source. Stay far away from manufactured in China.

Speaking of Batteries. I always put the battery at the end cap in backwards that way it does not drain the battery when not used. Have not had a problem with corrosion either. I have a set of batteries in my gas sniffer that are 3 yrs old and still work. NO joke.

Just WEAR THE GLASSES WHEN YOU TURN THAT THING ON!
Don't refuse to because you can see the violet light. The glasses protect your retinas from getting BURNED!
Otherwise, great info and love your videos! I learn TONS watching you and my wife does, too!
