NIssan Altima 2. 5: Runs Rough, Stalls, CEL On - Part I

I have a look at a Nissan Altima 2. 5 that came in running rough, stalling and CEL on with codes for the over advanced intake cam and a issue with the intake manifold runner control. I don't see a lot of Nissan's in our area so it is a little bit of learning and looking through service info to understand the system. After all, if you don't know how it works you can't fix it

the solenoid closest to the firewall is the lock solenoid and its purpose is to lock the Valve timing at 10degrees during cold engine start up (it usually is 10 degree, 9 or 11. I believe it is turned off when the coolant temp reaches 150degrees or something like that. Those solenoids are high failure. all 3 of them (same part number) and they do get stuck either open of closed. Best repair is to replace all 3 at the same time. I did a video on this. I have had 1 cam phaser failure for VTC however it was a totally different DTC like p056b or something strange like that. but typically the Engine internals are very reliable on this engine even with neglect. Cold start you should see 10degrees intake timing until warmed up. snap throttle you should see anywhere from 6degrees to 30degrees on the intake cam timing. You can test the exhaust side by holding the engine RPM at about 2k RPM and it will activate the exhast VTC solenoid. You should see anywhere from 5degrees to 20degrees. Dont focus so much on the amount of timing change but more so that you see an obvious change. I cant explain why some vehicles will give like 8degrees of change sitting still and some 20degrees. Either way the ECM dont care, its just looking for a change in timing. You may also see brake booster DTC's with this if you encounter a exhaust VTC issue on any 13-18 nissan 2. 5 liter because of the stuck exhaust timing and overlap and blah blah you already know.
2 or 3 a week with this issue where i work. Very surprised it has not become a TSB yet.

Nissan Wiring diagrams are usually just good enough to really tick me off because I wan't a real diagram. The wire colors are crazy. Black, Black with white stripe, black with yellow stripe, black with yellow dashed stripe, black with purple stripe. They also are paranoid about chafing they have all these brackets and wire loom holders all over the freaking place making it hard to get to the harnesses. I keep about 3 different Nissan starters on hand though, I do a crap ton of starters on them.

When your setting up scheduling of cars to see, Obviously you take into account nature of reported problem, How close do you come in estimating job time, when all is said and done. Just a estimate or average. Hitting it perfect would be good, but Im thinking would be hard to do. Maybe to hard to answer.

Thank you for taking the trouble of recording the screen for the pick and showing the diagram at the same time. Your videos have a very good production value by the addition of all these extra video sources. They also make following the diagnosis a lot clearer. As always, thanks, Eric.

Got a P-0011 on my 13 YO X-Trail. Fault was clearance on all valves down to. 003 -. oo5. They'd done 100, 000 Kms since last checked! Symptom was low power on start up and on cruise control tendency to change down a gear on slight slope.

Went to tour colleges last week, drove on the 390 and saw the Avoca exit. Haha, I so wanted to stop, but we pressed on. Only 2 hours from Buffalo. Love the videos, you are in the most beautiful part of our highly taxed state.

AutoRepairSource (formerly known as AutoMate) is from EBSCO and pretty much only has factory information but it does have quite a bit of missing information which can be frustrating and you have to find other technical data

Is it possible when bi directionally controlling the cam timing with Autel it is only commanding the cam phaser actuator and not the lock solenoid? Is lock solenoid a separate special function in the list?
