Just went through this on my mom’s 2011 in southwest Pa. Worked in GM body shop 23 years and now have my own shop. Saw a ton of frames starting to rust while at the dealership but only 2 people that I can remember complained about it while under warranty. The only thing that will fix this is a high volume of people taking them back under warranty. This junk coating is already coming off when you buy it and there’s a service bulletin on it if you ask. It’s not a real solution though. Did a frame swap because the truck is so nice and didn’t want her to just throw it away. Had to go to the bottom of Va to get a frame. Can’t even buy a new one anymore, discontinued. Customer with a 2019 saw mom’s torn apart and was shocked by the shape of the frame and asked me to check his. It’s well on its way. Still using the just wax coating. They know it’s a problem, they don’t care. Toyota took care of their customers. Btw, not worth a frame swap unless your son’s can do it for you.

Is putting salt on the roads really that necessary Is there really no other way for civilization to carry on life up there w/o putting car destroying salt down, these cars are very expensive sensitive machines these days. How bad would it be to live w/o using the salt! If the snow & ice gets bad use chains or something or drive snowmobiles like places in Canada do.
The town up in Canada where my dad grew up every year at a certain time with snow certain streets were Snow machine only roads and 4x4s were used as best they could.
I can't imagine living with 10 year max car life! Hell we are not wealthy. I bought a new 2004 Tahoe with all the great stuff, 280k plus on it and a new GM engine, I will drive forever, no payments I can afford to maintain her well! vs the price of a newer Tahoe, $40-$80k no way in hell. Same with my 2010 Toyota Rav4, paid off and can afford to maintain it forever!

Your right about buying your chevy truck down south, I live 600 miles south of avoca new York, I bought a new 08 colorado work truck, 2 wheel drive, I've done regular maintenance, clutch fuel pump, timing chain and water pump, brakes when needed, I have 190k on her now, and I also have an engine and transmission from an 2010 colorado that was smashed at 51 k miles, so when my engine blows, I'll have an engine ready to go, this newer trucks are junk, and cost way more than the 18k I gave for my truck new, but when Eric says get your used truck, get it from the south, because if you get it in salt belt, it's junk, my truck has little surface rust, but I have my truck crowned ever 2 years, great investment, keep up the great work Eric, we all wish we had an Eric o everywhere, he honest as it gets, LOVE SOUTH MAIN AUTO

I have always been a GM guy and I own a 2010 and I have plated my truck frame being an Ohio truck it always sucks to see someone whose hard working get took for their money it’s a sad an unfortunate thing to have happen and I totally agree with everything you said in this video I appreciate you posting these informative videos I enjoy watching you and I have learned a lot from your videos I am also in the auto industry I work at a shop and it’s just sad to see cars and trucks just rot away with all the cheap material manufacturers use to build these vehicles and I also agree with buying trucks from down south that is always a good option! Take care and thank you for all your informative videos!

My work operates a fleet of GM trucks and vans. Until very recently, we had 4 2013s, the lowest mileage one was 360k. Highest 480k. We even have a yard truck that just stays on our property and it has 560k on it. They would go out every day and do 200 miles and come back. They hardly ever had problems. Working there made me a GM faithful, especially since Ford axed the legendary straight 6. There isn't a Ford engine without a 'gotcha' anymore. Turbos on ecoboosts. Timing and break-in-half plugs on the V8s. Several states here in the south don't have inspections of any kind, so we get a lot of y'all's Silver-ROT-ohs, but they run just as well and if the government doesn't care, neither do we.

Yeah, come on down to the south and buy you one. We don't have rust issues. I got a 2005 Silverado LT Crew (not 4x4) I'll sell ya for $25, 000 with only 139, 000 miles and the drivetrain and underneath frame and the whole kitten caboodle is in excellent condition. lol. Interior could use some work. sunlight and dashes mean cracking. So glad I don't live in the salt belt. You guys have it hard and don't get to keep a vehicle very long, where we can usually run it til the wheels run off and over 300, 000 miles and barely surface rust. Come on down and move down here and save a car and ride. a cowboy or a Chevy or Dodge or Ford or whatever. LOL. Take care Eric and Mrs O. Cheers.

Wild how these rot out. Wife has a used 2010 that the frame is super crusty- But oddly enough it's solid!
Really don't know about that. I'm in the Oswego NY area and the bulk of Dodge's, GM's. And Ford seems to be the worst! Looked at one and stuck my finger through the frame behind the rear shackle.
Picked up an 05 Dakota- 230k on the clock, ran great for the last 4 years (has a code for the transmission now) We nicknamed it Crusty. As the frame is also covered in crust. But rock solid
Never really figured out what the deal is. Super cheap recycled metal. Surprised we didn't see a Mt. Dew logo sticking to the side of the frame.

Sounds like to me you’re hating on iron oxide. How dare you wait no, that sounds right.
1996 Dodge RAM with a 318cci Magnum. No rust, needs shocks has 300K miles on it. Purrs like a kitten and runs pretty dang good with those platinum plugs I put in 50K miles ago.
Next up is shocks and a paint job. Not buying the 2025 junk. Chevy can’t build an engine that doesn’t grenade a few miles down the road. Mercia forgot everything they learned about metallurgy. Or designing reliable engines.
Don’t get me started.
Thanks for taking us along. Stay safe.

My 04 suburban I bought new in Dallas has zero rust! I-mean none. And mechanically has been bulletproof! My heart bleeds for you guys in the rust belt. Really a shame. My brother moved down here from Kansas recently and he had a five-year-old car that looked really nice until I climbed under it. OMG! IT LOOKED LIKE ABOUT A $4000 CAR ACTUALLY IT WAS AN SUV UNTIL YOU LOOKED UNDER IT OR PICKED ON THE QUARTER PANELS. I WOULDN’T GIVE HIM 500 FOR IT. SAD, and cars aren’t cheap anymore. I don’t know how y’all do it. I couldn’t afford to live up there.

Wow so i watched the video where he put upper control arms on. I believe they were the kryptonite upper control arms. His family was in the background playing and getting wild as kids do. Anyways yeah my Sierra literally sat in the for 3 years. And just sitting in the driveway caused a light skim of powdered rust all over everything. Now when I picked it up it was PERFECT ZERO rust. Like what in the heck are these pickups being made out of. Idek what to say about it I don’t have any more money to get another truck. This is very sad and upsetting

I paid 25K for my 13 GMC Sierra White Diamond Edition 2 years ago with 75K miles on it in Oklahoma from a GMC/Cadillac dealer. One owner loaded with every option except a sunroof and i wouldn't have a sunroof on any vehicle. It is in great condition and will last me a very long time. I have put 12K trouble free miles on it in the 2 years I've owned it. The original window sticker was in the glove box and was 50K when new. I have had lots of offers to buy it since I've owned it but I will keep this one for a very long time.

I’m a tech at a dealer (Toyota) in WNY, and do a lot of used car inspections, we look closely at frames, and body, rockers any issues they go straight to the auction. We will not sell anything with a rotted frame, rotted rockers, suspension components. Most new car dealers are like that. However, you ain’t gonna find a $10, 000 10 year old truck at a reputable new car dealer. You buy a truck like that from a corner lot anywhere around here I guarantee it’s got a bad frame. So you get what you pay for in most cases.

I tried Mitchell for a couple of months on two separate occassions because it was less expensive than ALLDATA but finding info in their lame unorganized material pissed me off so bad I went back to ALLDATA. ALLDATA isn't perfect but is better and faster plus a library request will usually get you what you need. Also, their tech assist line will help finding info and speed things up a bit on common issues and newer methods to test stuff. Plus they hate Dorman so we bond. LOL

I find it amusing and ironic that whenever a sensor tells you something's bad, the first thing people do is replace the sensor. It's almost always, never the sensor.
Second observation and thought is I don't know how people in the rust belt justify living where they do. I could keep a Chevy truck for 10 years here in a flyover state and the thing will still look showroom condition. The cost of everything has to be overwhelming where you live.

Thank you for the rust education over the years. A friend of my wife just bought a used car from up state NY and brought it to sunny Utah. Why No freaking clue. When I heard about it, I told my wife to have her bring it by so I can crawl under it and take a look. A couple of years ago I wouldn't have even blinked at this. Now I know it's a serious issue and I want to inspect the car. Thanks Eric!

Got three Toyota v8's. 01 Tundra, 02 Sequoia. 03 LS430. at 73 that should last me. After listening to your crowd a lot I preach Toyota all the time but nobody listens to me. I've had that Tundra 17 years. one coil pac. that's it! Keep up the good advice Eric. Back in my day if you didn't know something, you continued not to know it. Now we have the internet and Eric, Ivan, and the whole gang.

I had a 1995 Silverado many years ago. It had many of the common problems--broken leaf spring, clear coat delamination, rotting cab corners, intake gasket. I traded it in 2006. Two years ago I see it in the local town, just as sorry as ever but being driven. I've had other Chevys, but they were all horrible. Now I drive Toyotas and I rarely find anything to fix.

Ouch only 10 years out of a new Chevy up north. I'm still driving my 1989 GMC Sierra here in Texas. when i climb underneath to work on something (i always take wire brush and a can of spray paint) if see any rust on frame or control parts. i clean and spray with Satin Black Rustoleom. My frame springs everything is black underneath. from years of spot treatments.

GM Tech, I get it entirely, my coworkers and I do what we can to keep them on the road, here in the Midwest isn't terrible but nothing like the North, but after a certain point there is just waste, feel sorry for the guy though, know what it's like to be screwed over like this, I hear your bell Mr. O, just wish others would hear it too

I own a 2010 Silverado that I bought new. Fortunately the truck has lived in SO. Cal. and now in northwest Arizona so there is zero rust underneath. In this area the sun will kill the paint and high mileage kills the drivetrain finally putting the vehicle in the junk yard or in this area parked in the back yard with other dead equipment.
