I know where you’re coming from I have a 2009 GMC pick up and it has cruise control that when you are going down a hill it starts applying the brakes and if you are on slick ice and your vehicle put on the brakes that is like you need to go clean your britches out situation and it also has stability control which is The most useless thing they could ever put on a vehicle literally when you are on slick ice you can not drive the vehicle at all once one wheel loses traction either when you apply the break or when you are trying to go somewhere it immediately goes on all four brakes and over to the curb you go due to the curvature of the street just think if the street lent the other way you would be right into the oncoming traffic. Vehicles that put this kind of crap on them should be sued, Plus the insurance underwriters who force them to put that crap on your vehicle. I am with you I want to be able to drive my own vehicle and I don’t want no electronic trying to do it for me when I know that I need to do something else that it is trying to do right the opposite. And another thing I wouldn’t mind all of that stuff if it was wired up traditionally and not all hooked up to these little electronic modules that you keep having so much trouble with when you are working on something. I live in Oklahoma and I have not experienced anything about all the salt and rush that you people put up with but every time they put salt on a icy road when it is safe to do so I give my pick up a good belly washing to get all of that crap out from under there. I always enjoy your videos I haven’t found a bad one yet except I know you use a Alltel scanner but is there any other one that you would prefer better than the Alltell

Get a product called gibbs. It is a penetrating oil but it will soak into a millionth of an inch and it will seal much of the salt from its effects. And keep that thing somewhat insulated from many of those problems. It won't cut salt but salt can't cut it either. Another interesting item other than of course putting Dielectric grease in the connectors is to spray a little bit of 303 protectant on any rubber plastic and things such as that. I had a 98 Dodge caravan. Once a year I would spray the engine down as it was running with Gibbs. A couple of days later I would go spray it off when I sold that vehicle with 254, 000 mi, I cleaned it off it literally looked like it was 6 weeks old or so. It was like brand new under the hood, and I had sprayed a lot of in the door Sills and the fender folds and the like. It worked well.
The other thing you can make up is if you were using a quart size spray bottle you put in 10 to 11 oz of transmission fluid about 3 to 4 oz of PB Blaster and 1 oz of Dawn dish detergent and mix it up and spray everything under the vehicle with that. If you do that to a newer vehicle the rust will be resisted for much longer.

Well. Since you ask. I would like for all these safety devices to be strictly optional- and then we'll see who is willing to pay the tab for the engineering, construction and maintenance. Personally, I think most of them are trying to be substitutes for an involved driver who is actively driving rather than just riding along fat dumb and happy. The only option I would choose would be ABS, but I would even want that to be switcheable. As you may know, ABS is your worst enemy off road - sometimes you NEED to lock up those wheels to stop. The other stuff; well, I'll pass. I've been driving for over 50 years and have somehow managed to survive without any of these gadgets. I enjoy driving, so I'm actively engaged in doing so. I could point out that while the law and common sense dictates that you pay attention and don't text or talk, all the while the manufacturers are installing yet more distractions; making controls only usable through menus and touch screens. Muscle memory just won't work when you have to change menus to turn down the heater blower. I could go on, but you get the idea.

I grew up as a shade tree mechanic, that as soon as I made enough money, I purchased a air compressor, a 3/8 and 1/2 impact, and 1/4 and 3/8 air ratchets. The new fangled electric tools were under powered and the batteries only lasted 6 months before replacement was required.
Had my A&P certificate and still used air tools with a nitrogen bottle and a regulator, as most places didn't have access to compressed air. Aircraft tires use nitrogen for filling tires, so I had a ready supply of compressed air.
All of the government mandated safety features only protect those that Darwin was calling. A real driver pays attention to their surroundings. Day time head lamps, don't need or want. Lane assist, nope, I prefer conventional steering box over rack and pinion of the electric type. The only thing I do like are the vehicle mounted camera systems, but not the factory versions, as the cameras aren't high enough resolution and aren't really up gradable.
Eventually, the manufacturers will work out the bugs, but I'm not paying to be their guinea pig.

I completely agree with you on the safety equipment. It all first started with the tire pressure sensors for me. It's really not that hard to use a handheld unit and check pressures. Then when they go bad which they always do it reminds you constantly even if the tire is good. Kind of why I drive a 2011 Impala and 2014 Silverado. The Impala is still rather simple on the inside with minimal computers going on. Whereas the Silverado has some more tech but isn't over the top. The Silverado has a backup cam which is very useful but I still look out the back window either way. I'd say my thing is to just be a good defensive driver. Pretend those safeguards don't exist and drive the car like they're broken. Unfortunately all those are probably not going away anytime soon since most of the features might be government mandated. I completely agree though they should take alot of the tech and crap out of new cars that isn't needed. Might make them cheaper too

I was just thinking about you today. I dont see the same situation at your shop, but up here un my neck of the woods, it seems all the independent shops have 2 or 3 dozen cars parked out front, back, side, and the other side too. Like ring atound the car shop, pocket full of spark plugs, ashes ashes, your never getting your car back!
Anyway, i wonder, maybe the other shops who follow your shop can answer:
Do you independent shop owners know that when you have all those cars out front back and otherwise for seasons, years, or decades, that some of us customers look and think - well theres one shop i will never use Do you folks know thats what the customers think
And heres why - i got 100% of the cars i need, and i got zero cars that i can tolerate hanging living withoit for months while it waits for the shop to fix it. So all those cars out front are just advertising to me that i can count on the repairs taking weeks or months.

I feel that modern safety systems do make you a lazy driver. For example allowing LKAS ( lane keep assist, allows you to distract your attention from the road. Some manufactures will actually steer you down the road with minimum steering input from the driver. Match that with adaptive cruise, and automatic emergency braking, you have made the driver less focused on the road and more focused on other tasks which is super dangerous. I have been next to others that were using ACC and LKAS and reading a book. GM now has super cruise where now you are almost 100% autonomous driving based off GPS location.
I Calibrate these safety systems and it dumbfounds me how many customers state that they were not paying attention to the road before the collision. Very scary. As always, thanks for your videos. I enjoy each and everyone of them.

Better Some.
Some things, like the backup camera, give us things we simply cannot do for ourselves. Yes, I can jump out, check the trailer hitch, jump in, turn the wheel 3/4 turn, back up 2 inches, and check again. But why should i
The collision avoidance sensors, on the other hand, try to protect us from being dumb. I am more than capable of checking my side mirrors myself.
My front collision warning is actually a real pain. It went off EVERY time I go under one particular overhead sign. I don't know why. Then it stopped.
I loved driving my old pickup - it has none of those things. But living in the salt belt - it's time is done. My current SUV has a lot of features, most of which I don't need. But the butt-warmer is really appreciated by my old bones.

I had wheel speed tone rings go bad on me recently and I lost power steering, cruise control, rear backup warnings, pre-collision assist, AWD, Hill Start Assist, and auto-dimming headlights. I could not get used to driving without the auto-dimming headlights even with next to no traffic on the road at night. I'd forget to dim them manually with the couple cars I came upon per trip. Getting the power steering back after the repair is sooo much better. They had to replace the rear axle for the tone rings replacement. Car only has 23. 5K miles. Maybe a solar flare killed the magnetism in the tone rings. This video tells me even more stuff can go wrong with other modules going bad from corrosion of the Northeast kind. The whole dash going out Yeesh!

I have a 22 Nissan Frontier that stopped me dead in the middle of the interstate in heavy traffic in Chicago. No one in front of me and was almost rear ended. Vehicle avoidance when there was no vehicle to avoid. It did it a few times and after three visits to Nissan they finally did an update to fix it. I hate most of this extra garbage they put on there. The more crap they put on the more that can go wrong. I am 57 and learned to drive over forty years ago and still do well without all the extra crap. I still use road atlas's to navigate and did not get lost once on my road trip from NC to Alaska. People can't even navigate their own towns without GPS. Can't back without cameras. It is making driving more unsafe ultimately, I think.

Well, I am a 70yr old driver and my newest vehicle is a 2016 Silverado diesel which I hope will be my last new vehicle in my lifetime. My 2nd vehicle is a 1989 gas Silverado which I drive mostly to keep the mileage down on the 2016. I am fortunate to live in TN and rust isn't an issue for the most part. I miss the old points and carburetor engines because that is what I grew up working on as a diy guy. So to get to the point, I never even heard of many of those systems you were talking about, but I do believe that it would make me a less attentive and potentially a worst ie more dangerous driver. My 2016 has some of them but I don't rely on them. Thanks for the great videos, I really enjoy watching you do your thing and doing it so well.

ABS brakes and airbags, that's all the electronicy stuff I need. Now I'm in a 2007 Volvo S60R, effectively crippled by the automatic rearveiw mirror. Mirror is fine, but the little computer for it died, took out low speed CAN, and they had put part of SRS, the Sunroof control, the WINDSHIELD WIPER control, and keyfob receiver all in the same computer - UEM
Now I'm getting a replacement but it will cost me $100s to get it programmed to my keyfob. MFKRs. It is rust free NewEngland car 210, 000 mi. I have a rust free 98 V70 260, 000 too, so it's not all pain and suffering, but Grrrr!
Just give me a 69' Camaro w/ABS, airbag, electronic fuel injection/O2 sensors, the Volvo's Brembo brakes. and I'd be set for life.

I love to DRIVE the car, not be DRIVEN around by it. My favorite saftey systems are power steering and 4 wheel disc brakes. Seat belts and airbags are good too. I currently have two 2013 Accord LXs, w/200k mi on them, that I drive like I am in the Daytona 500, to work everyday. What I cannot stand, and is UNSAFE, (besides my driving style, is the main brain box fly by wire garbage. If you brake hard, let's say to avoid hitting the back of a jam, then change lanes and try to accelerate back to hwy speed, it falls on its face and WILL NOT! So you are now in another lane unable to move with your ding ding in your hand, waiting to be hit.

I do find adaptive cruise control to be helpful on the long trips that I make a few times a year. I find that I'm not as tired, and I can drive longer distances with ACC. I also find blind spot alerts and the backup camera also of great benefit. My only disdain for electronics in cars are the damned key fobs. No level of expectation or dread can prepare you for being locked out of a rental car, dead of winter, blizzard raging and being forced to ride in a tow truck 60 miles to the rental car companies service center to exchange vehicles just because the key fob makes the vehicle think that you are stealing the car!

I don't think people should rely on sensors & other features to drive a car. A person should always have control of the vehicle at all times while driving and parking instead of relying on sensors to do those things because these days nobody knows how to drive anymore because they rely on sensors. What happens if these sensors shorted out and a car just took off and the driver has no control of the vehicle. I guess I'm old school I've been driving for 30 years now and I never use back up cameras or features on new cars. I always maintain control and drive a vehicle how i was taught long time ago lol

Automotive philosophy with Dr E. I like a lot of the new features, but, what happens when the sensors get infected with green crustie disease Or, if you rely so much on say, a backup camera, that if it gets blocked with snow, you can't figure how to back up HOw about automated parallel park (truthfully, I can't recall the last time i had to do that)Not a fan of the idea of stability control, with yaw sensors and all that. What if I WANT to go drift in a parking lot after the first good snow, just to practice in case I get beyond my normal talent level or need to do some really wacky emergency maneuver

Adaptive cruise, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, blind spot sensor (or camera for your Hondoo, backup camera, are all features that saved me from accidents as a professional driver. Problems come up when people use them as replacements for attentiveness. Autopilot has been around on planes for decades, and has reached a higher level of automation than ever. Pilots are still monitoring to ensure that the computer doesn't kill everyone. Drivers need to do the same, so all of these systems are extra LAYERS of protection.

IMO if consumers want all those features they can pay for them as options. The gov needs to get out of the business of mandating anything. Car companies should offer whatever they think consumers will buy. If I want a car without electronic aids and even no seat belt, and a some company is willing to sell such a thing, it should be my prerogative. I will pay extra for CARB non-compliance, steel bumpers etc. Regulations need to take a hike. Let the market decide what safety features people actually value.

The electrical is going to be the more failure prone in bad weather conditions and the inclusion of safety features. My fleet drivers can't stand the new predictive cruise systems work. It's imperative for us mechanis to learn these systems because they fail so often, or other system faults create problems that cascade into other systems. Like the rear camera issues that affect abs and other systems. So, electrical is jist as if not more important than the mechanical side to gas and diesel vehicles.

I come here for the banter as much as I do for the electronics/mechanics. But a video with Mrs O is definitely a win-win. Lane assist is a ball ache. Unless you indicate it resists the casual lane change. I know you have to indicate in the US. I prefer to drive a car rather than the car dictating. Mine will brake and beep when someone turns off the road and it's clear in front. There is too much interference from the car, in my opinion. I also switch the stop/start off every time I get in the car.
