Toyota Prius - Front Wheel Bearing

he shows how to replace the front hub assembly / wheel bearing. It is a pretty simple job even with the rust and crust! Ardent: The reason why you are having a hard time removing the wheel hub is because the force you applied using the impact hammer is mostly in a horizontal direction when what you really need is the force to be applied in an opposing direction to the position of the wheel hub. Which explains why the slide hammer is a more effective and practical tool for removing wheel hub assemblies. Like what the old timers would say. Always use the right tool for the job.

Did you ever think to use two or three 1/2 bolts and nuts as jack screws? Just knock out the lug studs to insert the bolts, and start turning the nuts and bolts until the entire hub jacks itself out. No hammering or fuss at all. I did this yesterday and had both rear hubs off a 18 year old Prius in about 10 minutes, just without all the noise you made. Anyway it was fun to watch you and your air chisel again. LoL

You probably already know this, but for the viewers, dont have the Prius keys in proximity of the car when doing a brake job. The brakes can actuate when the calipers are off and push the piston out of the bore, then it becomes a much more expensive job. Recommend to leave the keys in the house and put a short 2x4 in the caliper to keep the piston in the bore just in case.

I know this is an old video but I really really wish you would wear a respirator instead of breathing in all that dusty crap flying into your face! My grandfather did the same thing you're doing and spent his life working on cars and in the end he died from lung cancer at 54 because he didn't wear a respirator. You have 3 kids stop this shit!

Just a heads up, i did this job after watching him and having a impact gun with enough pizazz and then some. I had to replace the axle as it stripped the threads on the axle. Dont ignore knocking the stake mark out! It will cost you more time and money. Just trying to save someone extra work and.

Do you think that an electric hammer like a Bosch Bulldog or something bigger would have the same effect as your air chisel in loosening the 2 nearly welded pieces from each other? I'm going to try it. I don't have an air chisel with a beefy 220v compressor.

That is a 3rd generation Prius.
Watching the video, using manual tools, possibly an hour or so for each wheel bearing to be replaced from start to finish. Replacing all four wheel bearing might be around 4 to 5 hours. Yay or Nay?

The contact area in the housing is at least twice the thickness of other models I dont even try I take the knuckle to the press the press even has trouble with it flat rate pays a lot for Prius that's why

I dont understand the air hammer to spin the old bearing to remove.
I borrowed the slide hammer puller from parts store that I used to replace a press in bearing. That would put outward force on it.

How much of that anti corrosion spray and brake cleaner do you typically go through? You use them so much I figure you probably buy the stuff by the case, especially the anti corrosion spray.
