Come along with Eric O. as he has a look at this 2005 Chevy 2500HD 6. 0. The Check Charging System indicator (battery light) is on and we suspect the alternator has failed. The question is, how do you know if it is the alternator, the belt, the battery, corrosion, a broken wire or the ecm? Simple, you test it!

My friend at work is repairing his brother's car that isn't charging. It's a Chevy Malibu with the ECM controlling the alternator. He was asking me about it but I've never had experience with the ECM controlling the alternator but I just now got some schooling. Thanks. I thought I got electrical drawings before from AutoZone but today when I went there all I could find is a subscription service from AllData DIY. Can you tell us how you deal with electrical drawings and repair information for cars and how you get your info? Do you buy repair manuals or get your info on line? Thanks.

Those alternators usually burn up the voltage regulator or rectifier first. A bag of new parts that includes two new bearings, regulator and rectifier are available for a cost of about 30 plus, you can install premium grade bearings that are wider if it will apply and a more robust voltage regulator (XHD. Most shops won't rebuild them due to the labor cost would exceed a new or rebuilt one however, if a customer wants premium parts inside, at least they are available versus tracking down a premium alternator as most parts houses don't stock them.

Thanks for the time and video. My GF's 2010 Treverse's new battery is going dead after a few days. I found a. 161 amp draw and have not traced it down yet. However, while driving it, I noticed that the alt voltage, starts at 14. 3 but within 45 sec it starts dropping over a minute or two to what the battery voltage shows when I start it, 12. 4. I'm not much of a mechanic, but this seems like alt/voltage reg issues. Would you be so kind as to comment?

I had a 1995 Ford Windstar and the first indication that anything was wrong with the alternator was that the lights on the instrument cluster went dark, the engine quit and I just barely coasted to safety on the shoulder of the road. The alternator light never came on. Can anybody tell me why or how the alternator could fail and the battery discharge without lighting the warning lamp?

I have the same Mac cordless 1/4 ratchet and have learned the only way to get stuff out with it is the same trick. get it spinning and then hit the nut/bolt. Bought it used with 1 battery for 100 off the tool truck. Only advice the mac guy gave me was dont break the head. It costs almost as much as a new unit to replace it. Also the 3/8 head is interchangeable

Had the charge light on my old Land Rover freelander 2, garage had the car three days, chucked TWO alternators at it before they got a sparky to test the wiring and yes, one small broken wire from the alternator was at fault, a common issue on this model.
