That's pretty cool for sure. Being able to do the remote programming through the scantool and send all them _ones and zero waveforms_ through the thin air & interwebs wires. Technology is pretty cool sometimes. I'm glad Kieth was able to share his screen with you too so everyone can see it, that's another cool feature on this.
Anyways, nice work on this one, that was some crazy stuff going on with the injectors all firing like that. That first shop messed up pretty bad but that connector being EXACTLY the same as the alternator plug right next to it was absolute craziness. Glad you got it all figured out, thanks for sharing all the screenshots too.
What's going on with that red Kia that's been on the other lift for like a month now It has just been sitting there in the background of the vids with nothing going on except wheels coming off

37: 39 Hit me up if you are interested in understanding networks. Fiber is not going to reduce latency any appreciable amount over copper. Both mediums are operating at very near light speed. In addition this application is not latency sensitive. Keith's claimed 35ms of latency to his own server is a rather baseless statement. Is that round trip What is the path Is it leaving his network going to Autel, and back to his server I heard him mention that streaming music increased the application latency. That should not be a thing unless his network is constrained as music streaming takes very little resources.
There are means of improving / prioritizing traffic both inside your network, and what gets sent to the public internet. Granted it requires a router that is capable, but they are not high dollar.

reply

They want 20ms latency. HAHAHAH. They are really high on their own supply. To get that kind of latency you would need get some higher end networking equipment, minimize the number of steps between the wall and your device, tweak a couple of settings, and have really good internet.
Oh and if you have a dongle it ain't never gonna happen, the latency added by the USB protocol is going to eat up a good portion of that. We've been doing remote access for more than 30 years reliably elsewhere. Its almost like Autel doesn't have anyone with expertise in hardware or software engineering.

So SouthMainAuto I'd love to do a forensic tear down of the old ecu to see what the failure mode was. 10-1 it's just a bad diode lol. What do you do with the old ecus As for remote prog; I'm a telecom, networking and protocol stack engineer, so this remote DLC is very interesting to me. Personally, I would have put a span port on my L2 switch and captured every packet to and from the Aultel's wired connection lol. Basically capturing the data from the entire remote session so I could tear it down and see what the comms are doing.

Programming subscriptions have gotten out of control to the point only shops specializing in one or two makes, or dedicated diagnostic services like L1, can justify the cost. Late model euro cars usually have well over 100 modules, nearly all of which require programming for a replacement. Add even more layers of subscription for secure gateway subscriptions and NASTF for immobilizer jobs (keys. At this stage of my life, I have only a few more years for this to be a problem for me. I expect it will get a lot worse.

Keith had already started programming the OLD module when Eric told him it was not the new module. I wonder if it's possible to re-flash the old module and have it work I would have gone through the process on the old module and see if it was fixed at the end. Nothing to lose. The worst that could happen is the vehicle was just as broken and you'd have to re-do the programming again for the new module. Only 45 min lost and possible $1000 gained. Just a thought.
reply

That really blew me away. I am so scared of bricking a module. What I am also afraid of is that the process will change and my instructions no longer apply. Happens all the time - I make detailed instructions to step by step complete a process - and the software updates and changes the process, and then I just go round and round. Even if I make it thru the process, at the end I don't know what I did and I cannot update my instructions.

Great Video Eric and I think that the best feature of doing programming this way is the safety net that you have by having Keith there just in case you run into that oddball situation, such as different programs in a stock ECM or Heaven forbid you get a bad ECM that will not program easily. When you consider all that plus the quick reprogram it sounds like a win-win to me. Thanks for taking us along on this one.

Not that it concerned you, but I’m curious what caused a hemi engine to fail at 106k. I kind of feel for the other shop if it was brought in that way and they just replaced the wires where they were. It wouldn’t take long to wash a cylinder or spin a bearing with a pan full of gas. Nice work Eric, i thought that thing might have had a smoked injector.

Hi Eric. It was great seeing you and Keith at the TST Big Event a couple weeks ago. We have an Autel S2 and I never tried the Remote Expert feature. It was great to see the process on both ends. We also have the OPUS Drive-pro2(it has an ethernet port for wired internet) and use RAP for programming. Its good to know we have options. Great video!

You do the job, you accept the responsibility. Next time around they will be sure not to make the same mistake. It can be a tough business because customers often don't know how cars work and could blame you for something you did not even touch. Could also be due to the hustlers out there that purposely cause issues to get a job that they caused.

On the subject of the interchangeable connectors for the alternator and the #1 injector - did I understand correctly that it was the the alternator connector that had been repaired Is it possible someone spliced on a different connector to make a non-OE alternator work, and it happened to be the same as the injector connector

Master Witech tech here at Andy’s Auto. Nice to see a familiar set of screens. If the MPD Micropod wasn’t so expensive I would recommend you to bite the bullet and pay for that software, but it also depends on how many jobs like this you get. I deal with many wholesalers so it’s at least a couple times a week for me

That remote programming was wild. Down the road you’ll be able to plug your car into an Ethernet cable and get a remote diagnosis. Then you’ll try to fix it, mess it up, and end up towing it to SMA. Nicely done Kieth. Thanks to both for the video
Do you know if the other shop covered the cost

I am in Oklahoma and have used L1 before and they are hands down professionals. I have been in the industry for now 34 years and there is no way I could retain all of the knowledge that they have. Their business model is also one that I would consider unmatched. Fantastic group of individuals.

I’ll tell you what that Keith is a great guy. He’s got a pretty heavy job and he is smart way smarter than me which ain’t saying much. I guess but he’s way smarter than me. Good that you know him. Good luck Eric good luck Keith I don’t even know yet but good luck, sir.

When I finally lose my mind with these modern vehicles, it makes me GLAD, that learned on and understand old school systems, simple DC wiring system, contact breaker points ignition and Rochester, Holley and Edelbrock carbs. If my brain twists, I can jump back into that world.

try disabling wifi to make ethernet the default, if that doesnt work, i'd look in the DHCP settings of your modem.
Atleast you know where to look then, because its usually the case when it simply doesn't connect that it's not receiving a local IP from the routers DHCP.

Yes we will.
Only the bootloader is normally on there, and that’s it.
SW/Cal came afterwards.
Also I’d like to inform you, that messing around on the computer while flashing is a pretty bad idea. Just sayin. And don’t ask me why.

that was really cool Crazy how you almost need a computer science degree to work on cars nowadays. While im here was wondering if i could get that website where you get all your diagrams from i dont have time to go back through your videos i wish i did
