Same problem for the same car. It should have been a recall (one of many) for this model. Tried the one handed method, and it worked - until next time you got gas. I replaced all 4 feet of the fuel filler neck, since you can't just replace the flap assembly. Later models had an exterior door flap that closed with magnets and kept the dirt out (you are right about this being a N. E. geographical problem. Now find a 2012 Fusion with intermittent air conditioning PROBLEM (blows hot as a heater, and then it's fine. Fix Or Repair Daily.

Hey there,
I have a 2016 ford fusion se with 75k mileages. I am having the same problem. Engine light came up with p0456 emissions evap leak. After the light came up after couple week I started having problem starting the car everytime I fill up gas. I have to start 5 times and hit gas paddle in order to start the car. I really need help! If anyone can explain me and how much would It cost to fix? Is both of the problem related to eachother? Much appreciated!

Id like a discussion (lecture) on scan tools. Ive noticed a Snap On and a Bosch then there is the laptop. Some jobs use a smaller scan tool then there is a host of other digital wonders that are used under the hood.
All that said, let take it a bit at a time, Id like to start with scan tools knowing why each is chosen for which job or why one is better than another.
Thanks for your time and interesting topics.

I have been putting up with this issue since I bought by 2012 Fusion used in early 2013. Got a scan tool just for clearing the check engine light. It's the only reason my light has come on every few months. I know it's the EVAP leak because the light sets as soon as you turn the key and the engine runs fine. Load up on WD-40 and keep the filler area clean.

The owner needs to keep that area behind the fuel filler door CLEAN! Accumulated dirt can easily get through and cause problems. NEVER had a problem with the capless fuel filler system on my 2010 Taurus that I've owned since new because I clean around the nozzle area and behind the gas door regularly. That customer's car is filthy!

No not location related. Just had to do the same with Daughter's Tarsus in NC. Fixed the problem and the Check Engine Light cleared up. Dealership wanted 600 to replace the filler neck. For that, I will clean the filler every few months as necessary. NOT one of FORD's better ideas (as is the elimination of spare tires.

While the gas cap-less system can have problems like shown here, the reason the old caps were eliminated because people were falsely reporting problems to dealerships when all they did was not put on the cap tight enough. Ergo, why they developed this cap-less system which now can have issues.

Honestly, I have never heard of a capless system. Guess I'm getting old. Still like my old points and plugs Ford truck. Can let it sit for a couple years, and it still starts. Gotta have straight gas though. Ethanol wrecks the power valves in the carb.

Great video. I own a 2012 Ford Fusion SEL andnd I purchased a fuel plug and it helps keep the fuel port clean. Also, when washing the car it helps to wash the area inside fuel door which helps to cut down on dirt accumulation.

I had the same exact problem a couple of years ago and carried it to the Ford dealer they ended up replacing the filler neck and after that it was fine. I was told those things are notorious for going bad.
