I have a look at a Jeep Patriot that is having trouble running. It starts skipping, bucking, engine light flashing and has a code for the crankshaft sensor. Is that really what is wrong with it? Let's find out

replace the alternator. check the coils on the heads as well. your problems is alternator. its throwing out wild amps. you can replace the weakest link if you want. its the alternator that is the problem. she'll be in the shop again. another weakest link will fail. i know because i had the same issue. they need a recall on all alternators supplied on the jeep patriot. i had 3 coils fail and the alternator. one dealer replaced the transmission on a patriot and found out it was the alternator that was putting out wild amps. killing electronics

My 2002 Ford Taurus had the same problem. Crank Timing Sensor.
No knocking, slow acceleration, worse mpg.
32 (O'Reilly Auto Parts) lifetime warranty, relatively small part, Just 2, 5mm bolts to take off.
Much easier. On top of the engine block, underneath the wiring harness. 45 min fix.
Original part replaced, runs like brand new.
Moral of the story, Don't buy a jeep.

I had this happen. Similar symptoms, but what's obvious is the issue only exist under load. I had intermittent cam, also correlation code rarely!
Next time, just fyi check the desired cam actual angle vs desired, if these aren't in synch-you'll have crank/cam codes because of poor actuation, i wound up eventually replacing oil control valve, oil changes would work temporarily

Isnt it a hall effect sensor thats prone ta heat gremlins as it ages? Its like my toliet float device which has an adjustmen ta stop trickling of water creatin tgat annoyin high pitch sound. I adjust it and its like all gud then 1 hour later the dang trickle is back. Gonna have ta replace it in other words cause the dng gremlin has jinxed it and claimed as its own.

Hey Eric I just wanted to let you know that I just ran into this today. set a P0300 P0315 and a P0335. I would say the sensor to me was definitely shorted. looked kinda like a waste spark coil firing. And I lucked out better then you guys did because mine was FWD. definitely used parts of your video as a guide. great help

I do love how car manufacturers always like to put things they know will ultimately fail deep under a bunch of stuff that has no access, it's time consuming and expensive to replace. Plus also frustrating for mechanics like your self how much involved you have to get for such a simple replacement of a sensor.

UPDATE:
Jason replaced the CKP sensor the next day. It was much easier than it was portrayed to be initially. After that we again cleared the adaptive memory and ecu reset, ran the vehicle through a misfire profile relearn and shipped it down the road. All is well in the land of Jeep oo

Kinda like my 07 Galant where I had a battery drain and found voltage over the door lock fuse and seems to work ok since I pulled the fuse and the system seemed to reset itself when the door locks where activated 2x's yet still leaves me a bit unsettled. Thanks for sharing.
