That is unreal. Here in the UK, our equivalent of an inspection is called an MOT. It is a standardised test so no matter where you go the outcome will be the same and for some people, the conditions of what will constitute a failure are harsh. Like, not having any fluid for the windscreen wash.
Now, that isn't to say that there aren't some unscrupulous characters in the game and it is not like you can't get an MOT for a vehicle that should have failed. But the overwhelming majority of those qualified testers are by the book and they do not want a vehicle coming back to haunt them. And on the rare occasion you can get an MOT for a vehicle that should have failed, often times it will be for things like worn windscreen wipers, a bulb being out or a leak in the exhaust. Anything beyond that and it is an instant failure.

Wow. Please dont turn a blind eye to this. These guys think they are helping. They arent. The system is in place to keep the highways safe.
Option a- contact shop, suggest they fix this mess or face consequences.
Option b- report em.
You just pointed out a couple grand in repairs, and i get it. Owner cant afford to fix it.
Another week of driving and there would be zero brakes in the back.
Finance? I dont.
I will sell parts at just over cost and drop labour to near nothing. But, only for those in need.
Stoners, drunks and gamblers need not apply.
There are some out there that genuinely need a leg up. Especially now.
Eric, i would never let this thing out of my shop, unless owner agreed to park it until its fixed.

Great example of why state inspections are a scam. The owner depends on the government to tell them their car is safe - big mistake. Rather depend on your local honest Mechanic and make your own decisions on what should be fixed. I live in a state with no inspections and people get educated by mechanics on what is bad and should be fixed. They learn a bit and understand the implications of driving an unsafe car if they chose to do so. Contrast that to a lot of people saying Well, The government says its fine so off I go to the scene of the accident. I guess you can say that inspections dumb down the owners and provide a false sense of security.

. Although, if a car went on the lift with brakes in that condition, by law, the shop could not release it to you, as it wasn't road worthy. You weren't required to have that shop make the repairs to get it legal, but you couldn't drive it out. I've seen brakes where the steel pad backing was gone & the caliper piston was contacting the rotor. I've seen vented rotors worn right to the cooling fins. Customers didn't care. I have to pick up my child from day care. I need my car!

ANY time the govt. is involved, Problems arise. Governments answer is always more Government. Removing the state inspection in Indiana was the best thing they did. The process is always filled with corruption. If a Car I'm working on isn't safe, I do my best to put the Fear of God into them. Living in the rust belt you have to educate your customers on when it's time to quit throwing good money after bad.

Is the yearly inspection more of a cash grab than being driven by safety? I can't imagine the shop makes much money on each inspection but collectively it could be a gold mine for Albany. If it really is driven more by revenue than by safety, having this system may be worse than nothing at all as it can give drivers a false sense of security.

I have written repair orders on unsafe vehicles. Usually the customer gets pissed off and refuses to repair the vehicle and at that point I call a tow truck to have the vehicle and customer taken home. I work with some great tow companies who give me a flat rate for towing and I have them bill us for the tow. Not worth losing our repair license.

I hear you my fellow brother from another mother! Hear in ILlinois we have a test station over here just like that one and it infuriates me that they get away with this! My wife and kids are on the same roads and now no why I teach them about offensive driving skills! Stay true and keep on keeping on my fellow brother from another mother!

It's reassuring to know that there are guys like you out there who try to go the extra mile to make sure their customers are safe and that their vehicles are up to snuff. Pity you can't report the other shop, but I suppose it's an attempt to stop shady shops putting in false reports on their rivals.
