When my VW had a miss in it I replaced plugs, wires, distributor cap & rotor. Still had the miss. Time to take it to the shop. Mechanic tells me I just need new plugs, wires, cap & rotor. No, I tell him I just did all that. He says give him 20 minutes. 20 minutes later the old Scirocco was purring like a kitten. He replaced my crap with OEM parts. Lesson learned and I use quality parts now.

Many thanks for the video's during 2020 Eric - I have learn't a lot - including what a Tacoma is! Have a good Christmas and New Year will see you in 2021. Also, to all my American friends (I mean everyone on here) - take care, stay safe, wash hands etc - remember, we can get through this and look forward to a better 2021 - best wishes from the UK.

It's funny how the short and easy how-to videos are just so satisfying! Only thing I seen wrong was that the normal backyard mechanic (like me) doesn't have a high dollar scan tool to tell him exactly where to look, So I would've had to check each coil 1 by 1 till I found the bad one. Merry Christmas to Eric, Vanessa, and the chitlins!

Easy one to assess, I used to own a 2004 Honda Odyssey and did the same thing you suggested, switched the coil pack with another and the misfire jumped to the cylinder that I switched it on. Now the transmission on those Odyssey's well that's another story. I found out why they called them the glass transmission,

Thanks for the video. What's up with those inspection stickers? In addition to the safety and emissions sticker it has an additional safety sticker with the hole punched for trailer but no month punched. Never seen anyone stick a trailer inspection to the windshield either.

Eric, I am asking the question no one else dares to ask, what does the Tacoma look like underneath? If the owner is doing their proper Salt Belt maintenance (Rust Proofing) it should be good for another 200, 000 miles and fully justify OEM part replacement. If not.

I never get tired of SMA videos, even waiting patiently for the next one. Is there any routine you use when you find a bad coil, like inspecting plugs to be sure a bad plug didn't cause it? Or does the scan tool reliably pick up most of the secondary causes?

I've always heard that a flashing check engine light is serious because if you let it run like that, it damages the engine. Realistically, how long can you run an engine like that when doing diagnostics without having to worry about that issue?

When you have a vehicle come in that has been ran with a misfire do you recommend to the customer that the engine oil be changed? Just wondering as it seems like the unburned gasoline could easily wash by the rings and contaminate the oil.
