Could Jeep make worse vehicles? This is the same 4 liter that often ends up with near zero oil pressure assuring it self destructs while the gauge falsely reads 40 psi as documented in another SMA video. The heads crack. The 1000 TIPMs fail. The factory exhaust systems are crap. The grounds fail. The connectors fail. The fuel system fails. These are about the last vehicle I d want to be out in the deep wilderness with as I might die before someone comes along to rescue me outside of cell coverage. Jeep s are junk!

Forbidding milkshake. I would have gone down the blown head gasket rabbit hole. I hope there is a follow up on this one. Would it be worth it to pull the oil pan and get a visual on lower end to determine if a head slap would get your customer by until she can upgrade. Id hope what ever car she gets next she has SMA do a pre purchase inspection for her.

Those little xj's still get a premium in the snowbelt. If the floor pans aren't rusted like ever other xj out there. I would just dump in a few bottles of that Red Devil HG sealer, and run her till she blows. Drop in a used 4. 0 with a different head casting. A good 4. 0 will run to 400k miles easily. There's still life left in the girl.

Do you find that small volumes of coolant can cause sludging oil before you see a rising oil level, before you find separated fluid in the pan? Is the sludging always brown? From the DIY world I'd consider doing a quick replacement for the head, move on and hope for the best. Putting labor aside, I wonder how much that would cost.

yep one of those bit me in the hind end last year. Pulled the head and sent it to the machine shop, apparently the boss didnt elect to get it magnafluxed. Got everything installed and shipped it and it came back 2 days later with the same complaints. Needless to say they all get checked for a crack at that spot now.

I heard of this happening before. Now I got to see where it happens. I alway check the oil cap for yellowed mayo on any car I buy. If I see that time to move on. Not always positive indicator though since moisture can form and do the same thing if the motor is never at operating temp. I err on the safe side always.

I drove my 96 grand cherokee 4. 0 for 3 weeks with a blown head gasket. Massive coolant loss. got it apart, cracked head between water jacket and cylinder. Reman head, new gasket, fresh coolant and flush, oil and filter change. 40, 000 miles later she still runs great. These things are tanks. Especially the 4. 0

Most common on 0331 heads on 2000-2002 4. 0L engines. I've replaced a few of them, Clearwater Cylinder makes a beefed up casting that fixes the issue. They can be replaced by a DIY'er in a weekend. If the oil pressure is more than the minimum 12 PSI at hot idle spec the bearings are still good.

She could have a used head slapped on it, change the oil a coupke of times, and take a chance on her investment.
I know, I know. cars are not an investment as in increasing in value because they don't, but it is an investment of money and time that you want to maximize.

Dump the Cherokee, get a 90s Ford F-150. Thank yourself later. Had a 87 Wagoneer and 99 Cherokee Sport. I still got the Wagoneer.
Jeep Cherokee- 20 or 30 degrees from overheating if your electric fan isn't working 100%
