Mazda 626: Ready For The Scrap Heap

It's always my job to just tell a customer just how I see it. In the case of this high mileage Mazda 626 I quickly saw that the engine was drinking copious amounts of oil therefor replacing the catalytic convertor would be pointless without fixing the original problem of the oil burning. The customer had told me they hoped the light could be fix for just a couple hundred bucks. The EVAP code? Sure that could be fixed cheap enough. The P0421, well there is ways around that but it's a tad on the illegal side for me to tamper with emissions control devices so I'll leave that for the other shop to decide

I borrowed a company van this weekend (had to bring it in this morning on re-freezing roads after it snowed from 11pm on Saturday pretty much until 3pm on Sunday. not fun. Had it had any obvious safety problems, I'd have called the leasing company to have it towed to their shop and get a replacement van. So would any of the regular drivers. On my own car as well. regulatory standards allow many less than optimal vehicles out on the road already, why would you risk life and limb in a car with a glaring safety issue?
Here's where I don't get Americans: not only, blitheringly, would you, but, on top of that, you demand the right to do so if you so wish. In other words, you'd like you saying I know this car is a death trap, but it's my decision to keep driving it anyway, make the government go: ok, fine. In yet more other words, you demand the right to be spectacularly wrong about your ability to deal with an issue on your car. That is insane.
That's simply not ok. You're endangering yourself and other people and the government has to take responsibility for you there. It's almost as bad as not wearing a mask in public during this pandemic; at least the EMT won't get sick 10 days after you kill someone in an accident.

Honestly it isn't that bad for a 21 year old car with 233k. Especially in New York. I mean. replace the vent valve and put an O2 spacer in it and some Stabil or Lucas treatment and try to help with the oil burning. It's obvious that the customer can't afford a better car (or a replacement engine) or she wouldn't be in this position. It's a shame NY passes laws that force people to go into debt they can't afford to buy cars they'll immediately be upside down in. The world doesn't like poor people. Try and keep your older stuff running folks, it's built better.

OMG you sneezed all over that pristine car, it's now contaminated and HAS TO GO to the scrapyard! Just the force of the sneeze probably cracked that rusty frame! PS-- just saw the tail end of the video, you are so trusted even THE POLICE send their cars to you for repair! Congratulations! What happened, the State fleet repair garage couldn't figure out a weird problem?

There's a lot of chatter in the comments about how the expense of the cat is the important issue. However, let's get real, this car is puking blue smoke all over town, and a new cat won't help that. It didn't get better on removal of the PCV, so you know the rings are worn. That car is worthless, I hope she didn't pay much for it. Time to move on.

Last time I installed a Cherry bomb muffler was on my Opel Manta. It was winter and the wrench slipped and got me good on the mouth. It hurt so much I couldn t even scream. Last time I ever messed with an exhaust. Now I take it to a muffler shop as Eric is too far away

With that car I would not have stood outside it with my foot on the gas. Wouldn't want to be pinned if the car leaped forward. The Northeast is a car killer, time for a new used car in my opinion, no way that should pass inspection.

I've got a Honda Accord with a K24 that is using oil from somewhere. No blue clouds yet though. Replaced the PCV and it doesn't seem to help. Kinda sucks I think it's the rings that Honda installed for efficiency OEM. Bleh

Funny my sister in law had asked me to check her car as it was rattling and pinging like mad. Some mechanic told her she needed an engine. First thing I did was check the oil. 4 quarts low! Added the oil and noise went away.

I thought this was a remake of Cheech and Chong: Up in Smoke 2! That battery may give the driver a surprise when going over RR Tracks and the positive terminal pokes through the insulation. Fourth of July comes early!
