Chrysler Town & Country - Rotted Oil Pan Tom: Poor old T&C, we could see in the beginning that it had the classic It's raining headliner right over the driver seat. It happens. That was interesting that as late as 2006, you could see codes with the key dance (on-off-on-off-on. That's how I can check codes on my 88 Aries, but they are only 2-digit codes, and you count the flashes of the Check Engine light. I imagine that on some vehicles, dropping the oil pan could be labor-intensive, but this one looks like there was room to work, so that's good. Now waiting for Part II, and hoping it's not Chrysler's version of the classic Ford Triton plugs breaking.

Mr. O, great video, glad to hear your play by play again! Those may be the worst plugs in 30 years of doing my own work. And I have changed a lot of plugs over the years. Not near as many as you. But anyway I know you've been doing this forever, and you acquire tools over the years. But have you ever actually, not counting, lifts, building and business, figured out how much all the tools are worth, it has to be a crazy amount. I would never ask you to reveal it if you have done a rough estimate. But I can't imagine your cost, as mine might be 20-30k over the years. And I'm an electrician so I need sockets and pliers, screwdrivers. You literally have a new tool every video, lol. And all of yours seem to be a very expensive tools. Once again great video.

Had a trans pan rust/rot out on a Jeep Liberty which dealer rebalanced under PT warranty. 55k miles later the trans pan they replaced under warranty rotted out again? Dealer told me can t help it s customer pay this time. I explained I never had to replace a trans pan on any vehicle I ever owned in my 50 years of driving let alone two of them. Ended up donating the POS at 115k miles cause I wouldn t be able to sleep selling it with all the rust that developed everywhere frame, cross members, engine cradle, etc NEVER AGAIN WITH ANY CHRYSLER PRODUCT!

An old-school cheap clamp-on inductive timing light could've easily checked for spark without pulling anything apart. That oil pan didn't appear to be weeping so perhaps just knocking the rust off and painting it would have sufficed. I know the 3. 3L preceded direct fuel injection but I've seen the crusty carbon that dinosaur oil leaves behind, which is what's in the syn-blend, so it's nothing but full synthetic for this guy. And by the looks of the T&C, I'd say a high-mileage oil would've been a good call.

Anybody who owns one of these knows you should change that lower coolant pipe/O-ring; they corrode easily and should be changed often. Cheap/piece of cake. But if you let it go, you will be stranded - or worse. Get it done - and put some new antifreeze in there while you're at it. Spark plugs on mine were a nightmare. Corroded to hell and snapped off even at the cylinder head. Extracting the remnants was. interesting. Use the square extractors. '06 with 254, 000 and still going.

I got rid of my 05 Liberty with only 150K on it in June because I did not want to open Pandora's box. Leaky oil pan, bad wheel bearing, rough looking tranny pan, lotsa front end rust and rear end. . 2 shops really did not want to touch it and I had no place to do myself. Donated to Veterans cars copart.
Doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to throw money at it. cause there will just be something else.

It s great you try to save these total train wreck vehicles from the crusher but, let s be honest, that s where most Chrysler, Damlier Chrysler, Fiat Chrysler aka FCA, Jeep, and their latest bankruptcy creditor this week, Stellaris, vehicles really belong as among the least reliable vehicles you can buy and easily at the top of the worst of American brands by a wide margin.

That customer takes no maintenance to his car to new heights. I don't think he would have serviced anything if he didn't need to pass the inspection. I wonder how good his brakes are in the rusty/crusty capital of America. Lets not forget his tires. I wonder if the tires have dry rotted to the point where hitting a bump or hole in the road would cause the tires to explode.

I'm beginning to loose faith in the Felpro gaskets. I replaced one on my Honda Civic '03 version, and now this new one is needing to be replaced. The Honda original lasted about 15 yrs. These Felpro ones only go about 2 yrs. Going to call the Honda parts guy tomorrow and see what it costs to get an original if it's still available. The process is a lot like this Chrysler.

A fourth gen Chrysler minivan that is not completely rotted out is very rare, I scrapped one a little while back when the gas tank started falling out because there was nothing left underneath. I don't know what it is with their oil pans, my fifth gen Chrysler minivan has no rot anywhere, but the oil pan was rotting out, a lot easier to change on the 3. 6.

We have a company called Krown they do oil spray rust prooffng. My 2009 canyon is a total oil slick but the chassis, frame and body panels are still excellent. We are 3 hours north of you. Why don't vehicles get oil sprayed? I had a Dakota that the frame rusted out so I swore that I would not loose another vehicle to rust.

Eric - I love it when a well-laid pan comes together! Great job, as always. Lovely day ahead tomorrow, as I get to replace struts, control arms, ball joints and tie rod ends on my wife's '05 CR-V. Promised her I'd keep it running forever, which is ever so much easier in NC than NY. 250k and rust-free, thank God!

Great video as always. Even though Chryslers are mostly old parts and rust, the older ones aren't too bad to work on. Also had to replace an oil pan on my 13 Avenger, but it was way worse, to the point of looking like an onion blossom. Looking forward to the crusty plugs. Thanks again for another awesome video!

Even the old OBDI Chryslers can do the key dance, they just flash 2 digit codes on the check engine light starting with a 12 (one flash, pause, 2 flashes) meaning 'Battery disconnected within last 60 start cycles' and ending in 55 (5 flashes, pause, 5 flashes) meaning 'End of stored codes'

How do you feel about Matco tools? The snap-on brand I have lost faith in because their extreme prices on even the basic tools. I feel the Matco is more reasonable and the distributor guy is cool enough that he gives me good deals since I pay in full for the tools I need.
