Chevy/GMC - 4L60E Transmission Replacement - Part I Derekigh: This is awesome, I usually do one of those in a day, but I have the transmission waiting, I find that the transmission in Chevys are much easier to change than almost anything else, the only hard bolt is the Bell bolt on top, thank you for sharing, always a pleasure to watch, and the amount of knowledge I have learned about wiring from you has been immersible. Thank you so much, I wish you were my shop teacher in highschool.

You might not think this is exciting but I have done a few of these in my lifetime, always amazes me how the job is done, you have this routine down pat and with the magic of TV you have it down and out in about 20 minutes lol. That truck looks like a normal Vegas vehicle not a spot of rust, I am looking forward to the rebuilt/new one going in, your use of the Torch is smart no sense in fighting the bolts on the Exhaust you would not get them out very easily. Also taking the time to mark parts, put bolts back. once you walk away from the job you will never remember where everything goes, kudos.

Always been my experience these things let go 100s of miles from home and you end up with whatever shop can do it and get you back on the road. You hope you get a shop like yours, but as we all know, that isn't always the case. What's worse, is that you could do it yourself if you weren't 500 miles from home with a loaded trailer on. I think we got a good deal for 4800 bux with towing and all. We got caught with our pants down, so forked out the dough and was thankful a shop was willing to do it quickly.

Done several tranny pulls and installs myself but can't do it now, can't even lift my left arm abovebthe shoulder anymore.
Never understood why everyone doesn't rust proof their vehicles, pay tens if thousands of dollars for a vehicle that can last hundreds of thousand miles and then let it rust away. My 99 Suburban is still in good shape and I have it treated by Zeibart every year, Nov 23rd is my date with them this year. Worth every cent.

Quite the timely video. I lost 3rd in my blazer, and gotta do a rebuild. Only 118, 000 miles; my beater has 230 shifts great. Bunch of BS if you ask me. But I know these trannies can be all over the place with reliability, and guy I bought it off of gave the ol' muh son is a mechanic spiel.
Also, besides a little surface rust on the frame, my truck is about the same. That fluid film is the cancer cure in the rust belt.

If I had a shop with a lift like yours I could do it even today. I pulled a 4 speed (SM420) and New Process 205 transfer (All Cast) out of a 76 Chev K10 in my garage, floor jacks only! Given I was about 35 years younger than I am now. In that model truck (square body ) you could pull the cab hump (floor of cab) out to ease access. It was still heavy! But as someone else I hear from says, If I can do it, you can do it
Great Video

Here's a, question for Eric or anyone. I have a 2002 GM With a 4l60E. It has 124000 miles on it. The fluid is brown not burned. Probably because it doesn't get driven enough and has moisture in it.
Question should I change it, some say leave it because it may slip if I change the fluid. Some say sure go ahead and flush it out.
There are no codes or problems it works fine.
Any thoughts? Alex

I yanked the manual tranny out of a 1992 Ranger this afternoon. He brought it to me with a new clutch and throw out bearing in the front seat. The clutch felt fine to me, then after I attempted to get it into a gear of some kind I realized I was dealing with a broken transmission. Naturally there isnt a used one in the country and a reman is at least a week out. UGH!

I thought the underside of that Chevy Thunder looked a little too clean for a Nu-Yarker, there. Jeez, musta put her on duh jack stands afta coming from the showroom. Ohhh, now I sees! Soos, yous got some farenor in the shop, dare. Yous gotta watch dem farenors! Yous better double check dat credit card, dare. Yous don't want to get bamboozled. Yaknowwhatamean?

Use magnet to see if draining fluid in transfer case bends while flowing out. Should take about hour half to remove that transmission. I usually removed the drive shafts then shift cable then transfer case. I used to do that 4l60 in about 55 minutes to hour. see how he drops transfer case that takes stength to do overhead about 80-110 pounds case.

What a time for this video. Just told today I need my 3rd tranny in my 09 silverado. Had a 2000 silverado with 280, 000 original engine, tranny, transfer case, even wheel bearings! parked it and bought an 09. Worst mistake I've ever made. The AFM/lifter issues and the tranny issues. This thing has swore me off anything GM ever again.

This reminds me of when I replaced my transmission on my 97 blazer. so much crap to take off before you can get to the transmission. It's almost like you have to unbolt the front seat, then the license plate bolts. Then you have to remove the left blinker then the right tail light then the transmission will come out

Good ole pneumatic ratchets & the gas axe just doesn't get any better if it was night time would have lulled my to sleep dreaming of the days of my youth. Can't wait for more. On another tangent I wish those scammers or what ever they are would leave you alone so irritating. Cheers Eric(daytime in Aus)

Thank you for another great video. Sometimes the work speaks for itself. For instance, I was watching an older video of yours yesterday regarding replacing a front wheel bearing on a Ford Escapay, and decided it wasn't a job that I could do here at home and to leave it to the professionals.

We had a whole fleet of these trucks, transmissions were not an issue. We had a few that went, but the majority of trans failures were in the F150s. Had more fuel pumps burned up from faulty fuel gauges and of course the ball joints! I rather liked working on this body style.
