No Parts Required Rich Running Chevy Truck calholli: I hooked up to a 2010 Dodge nitro today. And the fuel trims were adding 10+ at idle. but once I hit the throttle- it would immediately hover right around zero again on short and long trims. I reset the memory, and it still very quickly pulled up 10+ on short trim (at idle, and relearned that into long trims within a minute or two. So I'm wondering why it would add fuel at idle? Maybe a small intake leak I guess? - I had it fully up to temp; it was only slightly cold this morning- maybe 45F. It's causing the idle to slightly struggle, just enough to be noticeable, and making a slight hesitation/ stumble if you stomp the gas too quickly at a stop; but it runs great otherwise. I might go ahead and clean the throttle body, just to make sure it's not sticking open slightly.

In 1978 I put Mobil 1 oil in my Dads Olds Cutlass at his new house. My youngest sister scratched her name and the year in the cement garage floor when they poured it, that's how I know what year it was. The Mobil 1 oil can said it was guaranteed for 25, 000 miles. When I changed that oil my Dad said he was not comfortable going 25, 000 miles on an oil change, so we adopted a 10, 000 mile interval. Mobil 1 wasn't brand new brand new, but it was relatively new on the market so I didn't know anyone using it. We felt like pioneers using it. Today I have a 1998 GMC Yukon with 325, 000 miles on it, and I have always put Mobil 1 oil in it at 10, 000 mile intervals. Dad's Cutlass was a cast iron 350 Olds I have a cast iron Chevy 350 Vortec. Dad's car was Quadrajet carbureted I have Central Sequential Port Fuel Injection commonly called a Spider. Neither one of the 2 engines used any oil to speak of at all. I do live in Southern Michigan and have to admit the salt ate Dad's Olds and my GMC is an eyesore, but they didn't use oil. We never ever added any between changes. I also have a 2017GMC 4. 3L V-6 VVT GDI w/ AFM and it uses some oil between changes, but I go by the DIC when to change it, so I don't know how far it goes. I wonder why my newer truck uses oil. It's not leaving spots on the garage floor, so it must be going out the tailpipe. Why? And I wonder how much fuel we had in our iron 350's oil at 10, 000 change intervals.

Eric O saved my marriage. My mrs got her Fiat product serviced at a non dealer, day later breaks down starts but won t drive cuts out. She gets recovered to the garage mil light on, garage says no idea what s wrong mil light off now and works fine, 2 days later same thing. Anyway, they give in say go to the Fiat dealer, in the meantime does it again and now she pi ed cause recovery Co says no recovery for same thing x2 - so on a cold and dark night I go rescue her she takes my car and I clear the code with a generic reader and get it home then to the dealer next day they say no mil no fix, I say you know what the code is so couldn t you look at live data to diagnose, they say basically go forth you don t know what your talking about. So I go home follow an Eric o vid and look at the data on my crappy basic scan tool and see the 02 data is all over the place. Have a poke about and find the air cleaner box slightly ajar at the back of the engine (it s a crap design very hard to get properly shut) hey presto data looking good and I only know thanks to Eric. My mrs thought I was great. for an hour or so.

Worth noting that the learned alcohol content isn t the cause of the problem, it s a symptom. The vehicle learns the wrong alcohol content because it s getting bad information from something or something is making the engine run wrong. Alcohol content is learned based off of the oxygen sensor readings after a refueling event. If the engine is running lean after a refueling event, the vehicle assumes that you refueled with a higher alcohol content fuel, and adjusts the inferred alcohol content accordingly. If it runs rich after refueling and the current learned alcohol content value is high, it assumes you refueled with a lower alcohol fuel and adjusts the alcohol content back down. Aside from early flex-fuel cars, they don t have a sensor that physically reads the alcohol content. It s all inferred. So, if you have a vehicle that s running wrong and the learned alcohol content is off, just clearing that value doesn t fix the car. It still has another problem.

My 2015 F150 with the 2. 7L Turbo Direct Injected engine is always OVERFULL of oil by 5K. When I first got the truck, I noticed the oil smelled like gas when due for an oil change (even before. I sent an oil sample off to Blackstone Labs, who said 3. x% of my oil at that point WAS FUEL. When I expressed concern, they basically said, Not to worry, this is common in direct injected engines. The fuel gets injected under such high pressures, some gets forced past the rings and into the oil. They said will not result in accelerated engine wear, and to just stick to a 5K OCI instead of when the truck's Oil Life Monitor wants it (closer to 10K) I think most would agree, a 10K OCI would be just asking for trouble.

I have a question on fuel trims on my 2000 Lexus RX300. It's the big 3. 0 1MZ-FE. It's not terribly off, but just odd. The front bank runs lean, and the rear bank runs rich. +6 on the front and -6 on the rear. It has 3 Cats in it, one on each bank and one at the rear. I'm thinking it's the cats are worn out or something. The sensors have normal signal on the intakes, and the rear one seems to be fine as well. It's confusing. I've cleaned the MAF with an actual working can of CFC. I'm trying to chase down bad fuel mpg. I'm getting around 12, where I should be getting about 17. The only other thing I can think of, is the timing belt needs changed and the engine is running too loose.

I drive a 2009 GMC 5. 3L and it never burns a drop of oil and I only change when the warning tells me to. I always have used Mobile One 5W30 full synthetic just like recommended by the manufacturer and it has never ever burned a drop of oil. If you have LSGM engines that use a lot of oil you had better be checking the cam shafts because both engines that have the active fuel management have a problem with lifters going bad and they will call an engine to burn oil. The next symptom you will hear loud ticking noise from the lifters going bad. That was not a Chevrolet thing that was US federal democratic government and the EPA.

Back in the 1970's GM redesigned their whole structure from just selling new vehicles to selling parts and service also.
This included in depth research into what parts sell the most and now only stock them but design their vehicles so that those parts were more likely to fail or be needed.
Case in point, GM found low end front left parts were used to repair vehicles involved in a low speed crash. So, they redesigned vehicles with more vulnerable parts and designs to maximize damage.
This was all to support their dealer network.

Ah yes arrays and their cells(block shaped) Funny how little respect many have for mechanics They need to understand so many different disciplines(hydraulics, fluid dynamics, computer science, material properties, etc, etc that in any sane world, there would be known as polymaths (at least any of them worth a dang)
Despite those facts and the fact they must be willing to work in dirty uncomfortable environments, they are often called thieves if they charge anywhere near the value of their knowledge

i have come across this same issue with the alcohol content being off though it was on a ford PIU (police interceptor utility) engine was runnin like crap reset the content and instant fix though we have also noticed an intermittent issue where the trans will shift hard normally i reset its learning and it works fine for a few months then it acts up again owner does not want to mess with it since its used just for driving in a parking lot on security patrols

Just a fact in the automotive world. General Motors has more vehicles on the road in the USA between 2004 to 2022 which makes it understandable that there worked on more hence you go to Japan and there the least worked on vehicle. That s for all you GM haters to get some fact to make logical comments about there reliability. Somebody s got to defend American vehicles being theres more of them on the road in America

You make me laugh Eric. If I can do it, you can do it? Really? Give yourself some credit. You're smarter than a lot of us and you got a ton of experience that you draw on every day. Most of us will never be able to do it like Eric. But if we wanna have a go at doin it I expect we all profit by watching you. A bit disappointed though when you when you misread lambda for percentage. What the christ is lambda?

You know you're hooked onto these videos when you yelling CHEVVY THUNDER! synchronizes perfectly with Eric's
Re oil burners: I know people like to hate on BMW, but my BMW (328 XI) has non measurable oil consumption at 90K. Ok, no dipstick, skeptics could claim the electronic oil level display is a lie, but I guess the dealer pull out nearly as much as they put every 7k.

I gotta say again, you are an excellent and entertaining teacher. Really enjoy the logical conclusions you arrive at and the excellent clarifications on how you got there. You take a case of complete befuddlement and when you are done explaining, I almost understand what I thought you were talking about. In other words, GREAT video! Keep it up, we're loving it!

Wow! I would have never guessed that some vehicles can be programmed for different types of fuel. I. e. -alcohol content. (To make efficiency of operation and fuel economy better) I wonder how many modern vehicles are like this? Thanks Eric! Decades of amateur wrenching, and working in family shops, I never heard of changeable computer settings for this before.
