I really enjoyed this video. It got me thinking about Rainman's problem on the easy out stuck in the block. I have an idea on a new tool to fix that. What if you had some sort of hollow tube that has teeth on the end that is just a bit bigger than the easy out. You put it on a tap or drill and insert it to remove just a small outer layer of the aluminum hole around the easy out. Then you have a aluminum plug that is hollow that is threaded on the outside and you thread the new hole and run the plug in. Then just run new threads on the inside and do a normal rethread procedure with the insert kit.

That was masterful! As a hacker, I'll have to say that the most difficult part for me is centering the drill in the old bolt. The fact that the last thread leaving the hole on one side makes the bolt look offset is no small part of the problem for me. If there is bolt sticking out, i can use a piece of tubing and the appropriate transfer punch, but let's face it - if there's any bolt sticking out, we're gonna be welding a nut on or wearing it out with vice grips. Fortunately, it doesn't happen much because I'm not in the rust belt.

That does suck, someone butchered the job before you, which obviously make's your job much harder? Been there, not fun? Make's you wish, you repaired it the first time, the right way, much smoother, too? Those are blind holes in the heads, so a bottoming tap, might be an option, to make threads down near the bottom, that are missing? Everyone will have a different way to get it done? Great job, and good luck.

Down in Alabama we say, It's harder to catch than a fart in a dip net. LOL. Good work, Eric. Too bad you're not closer and can straighten Ray out with his Subaru with a broke bolt so he doesn't worry. Still say you should move south away from the salt and that PRNY mess up there. What needs to be done if the hole is deeper than the heli coil do you put two in at that point or is there something else you are supposed to do? I came across this on a hemi head and I had to put two inserts in the same hole to fill the entire hole it worked but I don t know if that s the correct way or not and would like your opinion on it please

I was asking a shop costs of replacing my exhaust manifolds and they said because of the age of my truck they would charge an EXTRA 1/2 hour labor for every bolt that is broken. I mean an dishonest shop tech could just go POSTAL on all the bolts so they all break. seemed like a ridiculous charge to me

That is Excellent work! I SO appreciate the tutorial on helicoils by a master on the subject. Even included the nearly worst case scenario of a broken bolt remant drilled through, and still stick in the head. Removed safely, and work piece rescued. A real proffesional job!

I think patience can be an enemy a flat rate mechanics so they just rush through the job and not finish it properly just get it out of the way that's if you can get a flat rate to do it, well done my friend patience is a virtue can't wait for the other side

Excellent tutorial on heli-coils, AND, adapting and overcoming. (only tip I have, and it wouldn't have affected the outcome in any case, would have been to put a dab of grease on the mini-screwdriver to show us (all) the heli-coil tab)

I usually just drill it out and tap it for a slightly larger bolt-- and drill out the manifold for it to fit. Much cheaper and quicker than a helicoil. It's not like it's ever going to come off again before the truck dies.

It looks like maybe the same guy that worked on the exhaust leak the last time worked on the bumper and headlight assembly. Hey I'm not judging I'm just saying it maybe kinda sorta looks like the same quality of work

Skilled enough to use a thread chaser on a swivel socket attached to a wobble extension on an electric impact. I guess when half your holes are already messed up, what s the worst that can happen. Great video.
