Change your car with Carwow: We've brought together EVERY generation of VW Golf R, and we're about to put them head-to-head over the quarter-mile to see just how well VW's pocket rocket has evolved over the years! To start, let’s check out the stats. The Mk8 Golf R has a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine that makes 320hp and 420Nm of torque. That power goes to all four wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. This car weighs 1476kg and costs around 43, 000 when new. The Mk7 Golf R has a similar 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine that produces 300hp and 380Nm of torque. It comes with four-wheel drive, and the power is sent to the wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The car weighs in at 1, 500kg, and when new the Mk7 R costs around 32, 000. Moving onto the Mk6 Golf R. It's supposed to have 4-cylinder 2. 0L turbo engine that makes 270hp and 350nm of torque, however later in the video you'll see what it really has! It sends it power to all four wheels via a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, weighs 1546kg and would have cost around 31, 000 when new. The Mk5 was the last generation of golf R to have the mighty 3. 2l naturally aspirated VR6 engine. In this car it makes 250hp and 320nm of torque. Power goes to all four wheels via a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It weighs 1510kg and would have cost 24, 000 when new. Then finally we come to the original Golf R. This car has a 3. 2l naturally aspirated VR6 engine. It makes 241hp and 320nm of torque. That power goes to all four wheels via a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The car weighs 1477kg and would have cost just over 22, 000 when it was new all the way back in 2002! So the Mk8 Golf R is the newest car, surely it's got to be the fastest car here then right! There’s only one way to find out LET’S RACE! Thanks to for providing us with the Golf R!

Can CarWow push for an official statement from VW on why the right hand drive MK8 is so much slower than the left hand drive Seems like they are over-stating the performance figures. reminds me of some other figures that VW got wrong not so long ago. Can't believe that fuel is the only reason.

vw is just suck a boring car i know alot of people will not agree but i test drive brand new 2023 golf gti and gold r one of the worst sport cars i ever driven so i the end best cars where betwen hond typer R, hyundai i30 N, Toyota yaris GR, ford focus ST. much better cars then this shit golf

I think this thing of having patent companies is killing these competition, imagine how far Audi would be if it wasnt for the fact thst it cant be faster than Lambos even VWs they have to be slower than Audis.
They can share technology yes, but the performance should be a free ri

The mk8 golf r with blue side mirrors is the 20 year anniversary, it has 333bhp the standerd mk8 has 320 but it isnt the performance, mybe the performance would do abit better as it has the nurburgring mode, im surprised these car journalists dont know the difference!
reply

Mk8 w/ Blue rims. 20yr edition. 333hp. With standard overboost probably peaks at 345-350hp. But that mk5. even manual, still closer to 300 than 450hp (or engine/turbo is faulty. Star of the show is definatly Stefan: )

The Mk. 6 aka the Golf with apricot-colour upholstery is a monster rabbit with Porsche DNA, I love how it dusts the rest with a pride roar! Rothe motorsport has done a good job, they should make more Golfs this fast.
reply

That mkv was not making 450hp, its got the same hp and slightly less torque then the 6, has the same transmission, and both cars nearly weight the same, that car was struggling with something.
reply

It would be very interresting to have a dyno test of 1 car with different type of fuel like talked with the German engineer at the end to see the differences between 95, 98 and 102 fuels.

Matt is so skinny and almost weightless. It’s literally like adding horsepower to whatever car he sits in.
That’s what we thought until after the truth was traveled.

People who buy this types of cars, sometimes I wonder where they work, because I've been a doctor for more than 8 years and I have still not gotten my dream car.
reply

the golf 8Rs are the exact same, onoy difference is that exhaust makes the turbo more efficient and breathes better so it spools better hence its slightly quicker
reply

Weird how Mat didn't notice anything wrong with the MK6 given that it looks like the Base TSI model. Therefore he should rerun this race with all normal Golf R's
reply

It might be hard or near impossible but would you please do a Lamborghini Sesto elemento drag race It's been my dream car since the day they released it
reply

Theres something wrong with that mk4 as I had a mk4 gti 180bhp model and it did several runs at santapod run what you brang quarter of a mile in 15 seconds flat
reply

god Matt is such a shit liar, even at start when they did sound check it sounded not stock
You having a joke on me come on don’t be such a dick

reply

using lower octane fuel than the one the engine is tuned for will result in lower output, but there won't be much if any change if you use higher octane.
reply

But obviously you know you’re in a 20 year limited edition running 333bhp. Not sure why you’re saying they are both the same as they are clearly not!
reply

Golf 4 did ok considering the power would take the 5 tho. We all knew that sound test was illegal n why it won that test already hidden gems
reply

I knew when that mk6 pulled past the mk8 something was off. Its not even a golf r it doesnt have the right bumpers, rims, or exhaust location
reply

The one time you dont pan the engine bay whilst talking about the spec is the one time the engines are wrong How ironic.
If you say so.
