Regarding the s2k
Just sold my pre-facelift for 12. 5k here in the UK (much much cleaner than the one in this video) with similar mileage and I don't regret it one bit. but let me get into it in a moment!
Before that, pre-facelift cars tend to sell for less, because a few known problems that were revised with later cars. The two notorious being a higher oil consumption and weaker valve retainers. Personally, I always check the oil levels regularly and I had the valve retainers upgraded anyway so that didn't put me off, but you'd be surprise how lazy and not mechanically inclined the average car enthusiasts can be. so there you have it.
Back to the s2k, loads of amazing stuff about it that everyone on the net bangs about, and you've all heard and read a million times over. HOWEVER what you don't get to hear is this (and that's because 2/3 of the people that write about how amazing this car is never actually owned one.
The usable power band is between 6 and 8. 3 thousands rpm, anything after (yeah 9000, VTEC YO etc etc) you actually not squeezing any extra power, just more noise from the engine, and anything below. well there isn't much below that as you can see from the video.
BUT MORE IMPORTANLTY these 2. 3k of power you getting, you are getting it out of the engine so quickly, it can be very difficult to stay in the power band. It's nothing, nothing, nothing and BANG! you are now overrevving it (happens to Mat as well in the video. In a straight line isn't a big deal, but around the twisties. can become seriously tedious.
Anyway, that's just my humble opinion, from an ex-owner point of view, and a classic example of never meet your hearos. Even the VTEC (yo) kick, the 9k rpm and a look that stood the test of time, wasn't enough to compensate for a lack of driving enjoyability.
A car too serious and focused for public roads, and nowhere near fast enough for the track. Hard pass for me!
Cheers

Next do the value retention test. I have a 2008 S2K and would not consider trading it for either of these 2, obviously. They are quite fun for the $ with the mods but not in the same league as a legend. The old boy did well in stock form but it did seem to be missing a beat or 2 - still wasn't going to beat these 2 though. Thanks for the video, good fun!

One of the first production cars to rev to 9000rpm and 120bhp per litre for a NA car is pretty impressive for 1999. the latest 4 litre Porsche GT3 only has circa 125bhp per litre, the F20 in the Honda S2000 was and is a masterpiece of an engine. Still one, if not the best, car I've owned.

That’s wasn’t a fair comparison in my opinion. S2000 was clearly bone stock Doesn’t even make 240 whp factory that’s crank. Other cars were boosted so obviously it’s going to win along with it being tuned. If the s2k was tuned NA or boosted other 2 cars would get smacked so hard.

To be fair to the S2000, it's missing 20-40bhp and a LOT of torque, 80-100nm, compared to the MX-5 and GT86 so I think it actually did ok.
Fair play to Jack; either he knows how to launch a car or knows how to drive his car hard. Loved the banter between everyone as well.

How can u compare a n/a car to those. Add a supercharger to the s2000 and lets see what happens. The s2000 is the most powerful NA 2l engine ever. At the time it was build bmw engines turbocharged where producing 241bhp.

It’s it’s not raining and you have wet ground get kitty litter damnit, put it down and sweep it up for 10ft then you’ll have dry even launches. Tired of seeing this so wanted to atleast put this down.

I personally would still take the AP1 S2000 over the other 2. I just know not to attempt to race any supercharged Miatas or supercharged GT86s. Honda NA 4 cylinder engines are not known for having torque.

FOR THE HONDA being stock, not bad. Close enough that if modified too would be very competitive.
Hands down my first pick for reliable daily driver would be the S2000. Can't beat Honda reliability.

Bro really just said high-performance Japanese Sports car and pointed at a Miata, and S2000, and a GT86.
Where is the performance
Edit: OMG, they're not even 13 second cars in 2024. Bruuuuh.

These can be tricky cars to launch perfect, I think the MX5 had a bit of an unfair advantage being driven by it's owner.
Great cars all of them, wouldn't mind any of them in my garage.

honda is by far the coolest car but, it will be more expensive to buy and maintain. S2000 -best affordable sports car ever. I assume. this one is probably a bit down on power

S2K rightfully lost. Just like the way it lost to the first generation Z4 and the Porsche Boxster at the Top Gear track. S2K is the most overhyped car in automotive history!

I have an all-original S2K AP1, great car, drives like a go-kart and the engine sounds wonderful. We also have a 718 Spyder 6-spd, and the S2K is still fun to drive against that!

Yeah, well. guess it's a surprise. not These drag races are getting terrible. To get more entertaining, how about a 1920 model T Ford against an F1 car I'll go for the Ford.

Had a S2000 a few years ago, loved it. Would still choose it over the other two. Bare in mind that car is a lot older and still produced 240bhp in the late 90’s

All three are great cars! And nothing beats weight with hp. These are so much more fun than any of the new 5000 lbs, 1000 hp, $ 100k. I am old school and I love it!

More like this one please! The supercar ones are fun but unobtainable; the one-make ones are interesting but not really practical; this one was great: )
