New Dacia Duster Review: The KING of Small SUVs

Change your car with Carwow: This is the all-new Dacia Duster! It’s one of the cheapest SUVs money can buy, with the price starting from just 18, 000! The question is, even with such a low price tag, does it offer enough to compete with small SUV competitors like the Peugeot 2008 Well, when it comes to the design, the Duster has been heavily updated compared to the previous edition - and it looks fantastic! At the front, it looks so much more modern than the previous car, helping it look more desirable compared to some key competitors. Along the side there’s cladding around the wheel arches to give it a rugged look, and the roof bars and blacked-out windows only help improve the looks further. In conclusion, it’s fair to say that the Duster looks much better than you would expect an 18, 000 car to look! Step inside and the interior is pretty well laid out. The infotainment screen display may not be the best, but it offers all the functionality you need, including the ability to use Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. There are physical buttons for the climate control, and everything is pretty well laid out throughout the cabin. Unfortunately, though, the visibility to the outside isn’t as good as the previous edition, although it’s still more than liveable. One key difference when it comes to the engines is the removal of the diesel option. As a result, there are now two petrol options - a 1. 2-litre turbo that produces 130hp, and a 1. 6-litre self-charging hybrid that can produce 140hp. So is the Duster still the best budget SUV around Or should you look elsewhere instead Stick with Mat to see for yourself! Test drove one 2 weeks ago, the one with the 1, 2motor, 4x4. It was the first duster I ever drove. Let's say I was very happy to get back into my Golf6. Did not like it at all, it's very noisy, small side windows, and that dash, don't get me started on that dash, it's so small, you barely see the rev counter. They should have stayed with analog dials. When you look at it when the car is off you think it's a decent sized digital dash, but then you start up the car and the information is displayed on 40% of that.

Alco-lock soon standard on all Stasi vehicles from Euro-land. Personally I won't rest until Euro-governments install a government camera in every car so that a government agent in a government building somewhere can spy on you and decide - if for example, provided you vote correctly - to let you start the car. Meanwhile, people in free countries can just. start the car they own. Crazy talk!

5: 45 what they mean is that the piece has the same colour throughout its volume, its not just a coat of paint applied over some grey basic plastic. You still see scratches if you go up close because of teh sctual deformation, but you won't see any coloured scratches
6: 15 from my knowledge the hybrid gets discs on the front and back, the other motorisations get drums in the back

Don't like the slap-on screen. Make it look like it came with the car. They spend zillions on everything else, labor over fender curves, headlight glitter, grill shapes, chrome wheels, integrating all of it into a sleek look. then get to the screen and it's like one of their grandchildren got an idea to glue his toy computer to the dash.

The 4x4 version the hybrid engine has been proven with just offroad tires to be very capable offroad. They compared it to a buggy and it didn't struggle at all. But unlike the buggy you have AC, you don't get wet and you get a boot. Only problem was on descents, because of the engine size you didn't get any engine break.

4: 00 basically the reason new cars all suck
and all the regulations from the EU
edit: made from 20% recycled plastic. Okay, so it is just 20%. Secondly, the whole car, the engine, the battery, the used petrol, the oil, etc. etc. will easily make up for the 20% recycled plastic BS. FCK THIS WORLD AND THE SOCIETY!

The only thing making the plastics scratchy are reviewers purposely running finger nails across them. No car buyer gets in their car and runs their finger nails along the interior, they don't even touch things other than the door handles, buttons and steering wheel. It's such a pointless thing to even mention

I was in a Renault dealership yesterday as I have a Clio on order. The new ones are much improved in build quality, but just try the door shut test and you soon discover how they still skimp on many points including build. It may seem a trivial thing, but I do like to hear a positive thunk.

Sorry a car that uses stickers for its name badge and no manual tells me all i need to know. Buy a 2 year old Landrover or any other decent branded SUV than this. Nearly as bad as the BIGSTER, dear god! And the 1. 5dci is probably one of the best diesel engines ever, pity its gone.
reply

In my country it will mainly sell with LPG engines. Too bad there's no dci anymore, that was the best engine for that car. Sure, maybe the hybrid is 'smoother', but it cost too much, and it won't last anywhere near as long as the diesel, and it is much more complicated and prone to failure.

What the heck is the point of that vehicle Fill it up with people (adults) and luggage and you'll never get up that hill on the highway to whatever your destination is. Who did they make this for Not anyone who actually wants to use an SUV for what SUV are supposed to be used for.

Am I the only one who thinks that Carwow needs a new fresh, humble, charismatic and funny personality. I vote for. either Matt does race or reviews but not both. Sorry if im being controversial but Matt is a bit long in a tooth. sorry

I've just swapped my Jaguar xe for a Dacia Jogger and I'm very, very happy with it. Whilst it, obviously, isn't a Duster, it goes to show that Dacia deserves the status of 'the new Skoda'. They're definitely maturing with age!
reply

Good luck with the hybrid versions, there are videos in Romania with the car at 3000km with it breaking down because of the gearbox. its the Renault hybrid gearbox with the huge problems from clio and the other hybrid models

Absolutely hate it when someone reviews a car, tells you the price for the absolute base model then drives the highest spec you can get. the car you drove wasn't the budget friendly one you pretended it was MAt
reply

I don't like the design of this, I preferred the original. I liked the simplistic style, this one looks feminine to me and I loathe all the tech crap, it's just more crap to break on, more crap, more bills.
reply

Lets hope they dont do a skoda and let prices climb. Im keeping my diesel 4x4 mk2 for the forseeable as i can fix it myself. The new ones add a lot of complexity, and no uk diesel.

I've had my eyes on one of these to convert into and off-road camper, roof tent on top with everything I need inside for some cool roadtrips, would be a great second car!
reply

Miss when matt would say 'this is new car and its abit like a fish' etc also car companies are making cars super expensive so that the lease costs are high aswell
reply

More than happy with my Dacia Jogger. We are also having a new Duster. Absolutely nothing wrong with them. There are a lot of brand snobs out there though.
