
Are electric cars really better for the environment?

Personally I believe that because of EV's the future of Motorsports is going to largely be endurance racing and long range races. While making a reliable electric motor equivalent to say 750hp is hard, it is not nearly as hard doing the same with a combustion engine. So instead of manufacturers fighting for every hp/kw advantage the rules will allow, efficiency will be brought more to the forefront as the way to gain the advantage over your opponent. And not just power efficiency of the motor but also of batteries and motor production to decrease weight. Because of this I feel like a lot of Motorsports that involve all out power, drag racing for example, will largely grow out of style when EV's take over professional Motorsport. As much as many of us don't want the rumble of top level combustion engine race cars to go, it will happen.

Well, I have a Tesla and I also have a 1984 Bluebird Wanderlodge. The Tesla gets about 125MPGe the bus gets 6 mpg. The bus has a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel engine and makes wonderful noises. Lots of noise. I love driving it through underpasses and such. The Tesla is so quiet I always have to remember pedestrians and bike riders might not know i am there. I love the way it snaps your head back when I push the go pedal down fast. Our average fuel economy has gone to 60. 5 mpg so I sure feel smug, :) But, I do not let the Tesla beep at me when it locks the doors and I do not crank the music in the amazing stereo system up too much because i too enjoy a little peace and quiet, so I assume others might too. I'll go with the quiet of the Tesla and will be selling the bus soon since I am gettin old.

Thanks for mentioning the local farmers who have less or no water because of pumping brine in the Atacama. I say no, because pumping brine lowers the water table beyond the reach of wells that were already expensive for the farmers. When or if battery recycling becomes available efficiently, maybe the environmental impact of the batteries will drop, too. I have my doubts California s grid can handle a very large number of electric cars, but most of the country should be fine with lots more electric cars. I also like ICE cars. You can fill them up in minutes, even if you have to drive several miles to find a gas station with working pumps. And last fall in California, I could give rides to neighbors with Tesla cars during blackouts that lasted the better part of a week.

Donut Media I don't think every avenue was covered in this video, Ethanol provides a compelling environmental positive for ICE powered vehicles. Running E85 to E98 can effectively make the vehicle carbon NEGATIVE over it's lifetime by putting more oxygen into the atmosphere than carbon dioxide that the vehicle emits. Brazil is a great example of this as a country that implemented a large scale ethanol pump fuel that fitted into their existing infrastructure. This should have been at least mentioned in this video if you were going for debunking all myths. Electric vehicles vs ICE powered by ethanol is still a very debatable environmental tossup in terms of total environmental footprint.

You forgot to mention nuclear energy which accounts for the 20% of US energy generation. One problem no one is talking about is the waste fuel and how uranium fuel only has a service life of about 7 years. Then they have to store it for about 20 years in cooling pools until they can store it into drums. The big issue comes from once it is in drums because we do not have a place to store these radiocative containers for the 250, 000 years they need to reach their half life. I'm not against EV's but you can not ignore the fact that 20% of our electricity comes from nuclear fuel which is much more harmful and much harder to store than co2

You didnt bust any myths. And green energy only accounts for 19% of the world's energy. Solar and wind are terrible energy sources only producing energy 30% of the time. Evs only account for 2% sales globally after a decade. Co2 isnt a pollutant. So using that as a pollution source is ridiculous. Humans emit 40000ppm in every breath and your crying about 400ppm in the atmosphere? And by the way after the global shut down co2 still went up 5ppm. Sp much for humans controlling co2 emissions. And all living matter is carbon and require co2 for life.

You forgot one HUGE key thing the battery packs on a EV have to be changed out every couple years. I know that the manufacturer claimed something like 80, 000 to 100, 000 per pack. It isn t true. According to my family member who is one of the few certified master mechanics for some EV s as well as many regular cars as well as exotic car, the true rate of change is about every three years. Sometimes as much as four year. The manufacturer ideal is to change the battery at LEAST twice during its life. So triple the EV battery foot print minimally.

Take also particles into account. Some of them will be from combustion, but over 90% is brakes and tires. Especially tires will go much quicker due to the quick torque and the heavy batteries. Brakes will be used less thanks to regeneration, but when they are used, they wear faster. That's just one extra thing. There are many more factors. We all know the earth is warming, but still there is no solid proof that CO2 is the cause. I'm not saying that we should do nothing, but more research is required to find the actual causes of global warming.
