WTF is JD Power? WheelHouse Steve Doe: Nobody cares about quality because thats a term not visceral to the lay person. Some people make entire careers specializing in the quality industry. What most people want to know is if its a good fit for them. Most people are concerned about the financial impact, so one way to satisfy the market would be to collect the associated costs of ownership at different stages. Vehicle purchase average at various ages, total average maintenance expenses (parts, labor, planned, unplanned, consumables, replacements) at various ages, resell value at various ages. Ages might include new car, 3-year old, 5-year old, 7-year old and/or mileage such as 0-miles, 50, 000-miles, 100, 000-miles, 150, 000-miles. Data for planned maintenance would be more or less constant, except maybe pricing of time and material. Unplanned maintenance data would definitely offer more variables. Also would need to account for location, as acquiring parts in Europe for a VW vehicle costs very differently than acquiring same in USA. Repair facilities would need incentive to join the network, and this would be a logistical nightmare. but certainly not impossible. I was thinking of insurance companies and warranty companies, but these guys just get their data from repair facilities already, are looking at repairs only above a certain threshold, and the numbers they receive are usually inflated by the source (repair facilities claim book repair time, not actual repair time. If an independent third party could mine this data from a network of repair shops / mechanics, then I think the consumers would be better informed.

Fun story about JD Power. I used to work for an insurance company (lets just say they're one of the big ones. And one day I came through the front doors to a JD Power Award for Best Insurance Company to Work For. I never got a survey. No one I worked with ever got the survey. Found out that ol JD ranked our company really low, but the higher ups kicked them a few extra figures to take a closer look because the initial survey they sent out came back with pretty bad results. wink wink nudge nudge But these awards TOTALLY aren't paid for.

I almost believed you until you started to hock Consumer Report (CR. I have lost count of how many times my family got bitten because we bought what CR touted. CR is NOT reliable and I can give you 1 example (and I have many MANY other examples): microwave ovens. My parents were CR believers until they went through 3 microwave ovens in 12 years. I have an old Panasonic microwave oven that I bought in 1984 and still works as of this writing August 22, 2019. All of those 3 microwave ovens my parents bought were all highly rated by CR.

Consumer Reports told us that buying an LG refrigerator was a good purchase for our family home. Yesterday the compressor went out. Appliance technician said LG makes the worst appliances. Our fridge was the 3rd one that week he had condemned for compressor failure. Consumer reports, JD power. Its all a scam. Ask friends and family what they think of the products they buy. Dont trust these consumer protection companies that help you buy. All a scam.

Are we honestly going to ignore the whole thing about categories? You mention that there's a LOT of them, but you never mention why. Most of them exist because one of the manufacturers paid JD Power to add it to the list, and keep it narrow enough their vehicle only competes with 1 or 2 other cars in that category. JD Power is paid for advertising, it's just slightly more sneaky about it than you were looking for.

Chevy is digging their own grave and its hilarious. Jus rebrand yourself, make improvements in your production and work staff, and go through more quality testing. Do these few long term improvements and Im sure Chevy could compete again. But Im jus being honest, if you have 10k why tf would you go out and put it down on a CHEVY? Thats jus your fault

You missed probably two of the biggest points in the whole video. Surveys are useless because they do not get enough of a sample size (did they ask you about your new car? probably not. You also missed the fact that one JD Power IS a MARKETING company. JD Power probably sponsored this video lol

How many people even own a Lexus compared to all the other vehicles made by manufacturers? Lexus is a good brand but there might be fewer complaints because they have less owners. I mean if you have the money to afford one why not get one of the other expensive brands?

JD Power is a great service to societyWatch enough Chevy commercials and you'll quickly figure it out. Anything that wins a JD Power award, you must stay away from it. I don't know about you, but to me, that is a great service to society
