Anyone who says the Trabant was an okay car because it was built under communism during the 80s needs to buy a brain. I have a friend who grew up in East Germany. His family had a Trabant. Of course he has fond nostalgic memories of it, but he was under no illusions that it literally did nothing well and was a 100% pos. It's a joke of engineering. I've seen them up close, it's barely a car, with barely a structure to hold it up. You'd be afraid to sit in one, much less roll at 15 mph. Luckily it didn't go much faster. I've seen cars built in the 1900s, as in before 1910, that had better engineered and safer chassis, and you had to wait 3-5 years on a waiting list for the privilege to receive one. The Trabant was practically THE real-time symbol of the failure of communism in Russia and its Eastern Bloc. I'm a lefty Democrat who according to some is half a step away from Maoism, but don't start making excuses for this garbage. They could have done better because the whole freaking rest of the world was for crying out loud. Cult followings now do not equate to justifying it during its original time or place.

The BMW Isetta was a breathtaking development at the time. Germany, mainly the big cities, industrial sites and factories were completely destroyed after WWII and it took until the 1960s for Germany to be rebuilt. In 1954, when the Isetta came on the market, 90% of Germans had hardly any money for a normal car. In Germany then, as it is today, petrol was much more expensive than anywhere else on earth. Some of the roads were still in a catastrophic condition almost two decades after the war. Back then, you just needed an inexpensive way to get to work every day in any weather. Back then, people saved money for years to buy a small, cheap car and the people were proud of their little car.

In fairness to the Tahoe Hybrid, it was never meant to be any good. It's exactly what GM intended it to be: a cynical cash-in on the hype (and the tax credits) of the early hybrid era. Of course, the fact that a vehicle was _supposed_ to be junk doesn't mitigate the fact that it _is_ junk, but at least there's a reason.
As far as the Isetta goes, I hope one of these days you get an opportunity to drive one of the various types of Messerschmitt _Kabinenroller. _ Same concept, better styling, plus you're driving a Messerschmitt, which I have to assume is inherently awesome.

I would say now that back up cameras are mandated in the US and the update the mirage is much better now then it was in the old video! . Umm yeah Mitsubishi still offers the mirage 15k car, 14k hatch, and I guess the higher hatch model 16k
But if you add options at all your talking like 20k new for the additions and you can get a very reliable Hyundai with like 20k miles on it only a few years old for like 13, 000! I mean there are prolly hundreds of cars under this price point gently used that would be better handling and all the features.

The trabant was updated in 1990 with a 1. 1l VW engine, which makes him a little faster. But with the end of the GDR an the availabilty of western cars only a few people want to buy the Eins-Eins animore and so his fate was sealed.

As much as it s funny to say, I think the Trabant will be one of the only cars still running 100 years after it rolled off the factory line. It s like the Model T, it is so simple that there isn t rlly a lot that could go wrong.

The Trabant was a bad car even in the 70's. VW Beetle was way way better. So was Fiat 600 not to mention 126. Only the universal/wagon werison made some sense but still. no. Having said that I smile every time I see one.
