The downside of the Wrangler 392 is the fact you're really only getting the powertrain. Other Dodge and Jeep 392/SRT products have improved brakes, steering, and suspension, but you don't get them here. Everything else is from the parts bin. The 392 has the same brakes as the Rubicon 4Xe, the frame tweaks are from the Gladiator, the steering is the same in every other JL, and the suspension is merely a modified version of the Mopar lift kit to accommodate the added weight. It's still an impressive machine, but for the added cost, you're forced to get premium trim options such as painted fenders/tops and leather seats, things that should've been spared in favor of improved handling.

If I had the choice I think I'd always go for the factory engine. Reason being: usually the engine isn't the only thing that changes when you get a different one. Theres simple things like better brakes and different components near the engine that might get done in an aftermarket swap as well. Then theres bigger stuff like a different transmission and differential which should also be changed to accomodate the new power. And then there's stuff like variations to the body to account for the engine in a crash. That's stuff where I want manufacturer testing behind it because it's critical to safety.

Fun review, but I consider the 392 to be more of a novelty vehicle. I own a current Rubicon and adding that much power to a vehicle that sits that hight off the ground and lack of stopping power (even with the beefed up brakes) is dangerous especially around a curve. I love the sound but 12 MPG of premium gas is a big NO for me, for 90 grand I would spend more and get a G wagon much more refined with a big V8 and stellar resale too. But to those that buy the 392 congrats and be careful.

Part of the reason they limit it to 110 mph is because it has a 4. 56 rear end. That's a serious torque ratio, not a speed/economy ratio. Even with the eight speed trans, I'm guessing it would be revving pretty high at top speed.

I smile every time I mash on the accelerator of my 392! Especially when the exhaust bypass is on & the off-road+ is turned on! FYI. It's the sound that sets it apart from ALL other Wranglers! :)

The Jeep Wrangler is a perfect example that many Americans do NOT want new concepts in transportation. Many want reliable, stylish classic vehicles. Cadillac and Lincoln missed out.

Mr.
LOOKS like a real fun ride, what Jeep owners REALLY want is the cummings straight 6 or even a four cylinder diesel, could be a weight problem, I'm sure this will be very fun in any case.

Sadly the Jeep Wrangler gets the worst safety rating of any passenger vehicle sold in Australia. 3 stars. Only two other vehicles get such a bad rating, Jeep Gladiator & Ford Mustang.
