One Year With an Aston Martin: Saying Goodbye

GO READ MY FAREWELL COLUMN I owned my 2007 Aston Martin V8 Vantage for a year, and now it's time to say goodbye. Here's what I thought of it after a year of ownership. Phil Odom: In August of 2016 I purchased a 2007 Aston Martin Vantage. I didn't purchase the bumper to bumper warranty, and ended up with 6, 000 in repairs. However since I paid under 40, 000 for this low mileage California Sage/Tan interior beauty I still came out ahead. I've driven it 10, 000 miles in the last 17 months without any problems. Every where I show up with the Aston it draws a crowd. I have also shown the Vantage at British car show, three times with 2 first place and 1 second place in class. It's the best driving and most comfortable car I have owned, having owned 24 muscle, luxury, and sport cars. I have 2 Jaguars in my garage also, but rarely drive my Jag sports car and use the sedan for grocery shopping. I have even taken the Aston onto a race track and look to spend some time on track days and doing autocross events. I highly recommend the Vantage as a keeper

Through bizarre circumstances I met a guy who designed software for Aston. He told they used subsystems from about 4 different other makes in one car (each with its own very expensive CPU to control them. So software management (fixing system faults) was quite a mess. He always drove a small BMW. I aplaud your decision to always sit in the back seats of cars (if they have them) to see how practical they really are. Watching you get in the back of an original Mini and then a Hummer was really informative.

Glad I bought my Aston Martin Vantage before I saw your videos or I may have decided against it. I have had it one and a half years and spent 1150 for 2 services and 65 for a new tow hook (which is required when you take it on the track and the original one was not there. I have only done about 3500 miles for a total of 34000 miles including a couple hundred miles on the track and that is the only money I had to spend on it other than insurance, tax etc. Am I lucky or are you unlucky?

If you own something you are worries to use you should not have bought it. Anyone remember home alone (was it number 2 in new York) and the roller blades metaphor for the whole movie. When I buy a new car I am buying something to be part of my life. That being said said, buy nice toys but they are toys not life style purchases (which you should still not be worries to park. Or change where you live.

I'm surprised you didn't miss that car Doug. You spent so much time with it, and it seemed like it was pretty fun to drive. I cried like a baby when I had to turn in my plates to my old 2012 Volvo S60 R-Design to the insurance company after I wrecked it. After spending so much time with it, it was like a member of my family. I STILL miss that car dearly.

where is the beef here? Entertaining but short on facts and figures. How much did it cost to maintain (regular maintenance born by you and otehr maintenance items covered under warranty, plus how much depreciation did you incur? Those facts would be more intereting than the touchy feely apporach you had on thsi video.

I had to put my Lancia Beta Coupe Volumex into storage. I think about it and miss it every day. People I know with Lancias and Alfas can't sell them. You will meet your perfect car, forgive its faults and won't be able to sell it. Your wife will leave you, of course, but it won't matter. Good luck with your search.

Doug I just bought a DB9 Volante V12 used with 50k mles from a dealer in cali sight unseen. .. ok. .. crazy. . Did you buy the warranty from the dealer? I have bought these warranties on many mercedes and jaguars. .. they pay for themselves if you keep them for just a few years. .. . any ideas?

I really like you acutally _driving_ your cars on a day-to-day basis. That is exactly what I do, too. Then again, I can do so more easily, as mine score better on the practicability score (but not on the value score. Well, I am an Audi guy. ;)Nevertheless I hate the Allroad just as much as you.
