I absolutely hate the whole electric car owners only need to go 30 or so miles a day argument. Your back handed commitment kinda addressed this. In a gas car, it goes 300-500 miles. Why? So I don't have to stop at a gas station every 5 seconds. I own a car not because I go to work or buy groceries. Yeah. Its a frequent use and sure. 30 miles is adequate for that. But thats not why I own one. The reason imo short trip buyers are buying electric vehicles is because the refueling infrastructure is absolutely terrible. Its not adequate. I'd be first in line to buy if recharging electric vehicles was as easy as gas powered ones. Sure. Most of my trips are 50 miles or less. But I don't own a car because of those. I own a car so I can take trips. Drive where I want with little concern I have 5 miles left on my range. If you cannot muster 300+ miles & less than 15 minute refueling time, then you have a hobbyists toy. Its designed to not be useful. Its designed to target niche customers. Not mainstream customers. Or customers who can afford multiple vehicles.

I like the MX-30, it is a very rational car with focus on what matters.
Now it is clearly not for Doug or really for the US, but in Europe and Asia it makes plenty of sense just like fx. the i3 which btw. did okay in European cities.
And that Mazda sells this with some days of access to their bigger cars included it fine, there is no sense in driving some big thing around when most days is just about a short commute to work.
Finally on performance, just exactly how many times do you even put your right foot on the floor in a modest car not to mention something fast. The MX-30 is plenty fast to keep up in traffic, it is just that car reviewers forget what everyday driving is like and same thing on the infotainment - it doesn't take many days with a car before you can use physical buttons without looking so having the wheel/knob thing is much better than the touch screen almost out of reach.

Range anxiety is blown out of proportion 100%, so I agree with Mazda there, but as someone who has been daily driving EVs for years, even driving less than 30 miles a day, 100 mile range will be anxiety inducing. My first electric car had like 110 miles I think IIRC, was pretty anxious about range even though that was plenty for the most part. My second electric car had like 170 miles range, way more than I need for daily driving but not long enough for those occasional longer trips and still a bit of range anxiety. My current EV has over 250 miles range and I have zero range anxiety, it's even long enough to do some of the longer occasional trips, and with slightly better charging infrastructure and a bit better range (both coming soon, it will be able to handle basically any trip. Last year I only drove my gas car a handful of times just to keep the battery good.

23: 58 I am the person who actually uses all of the capabilities of the vehicles I buy Though I understand that s an anomaly. I ve owned a number of interesting, capable, and polarizing cars often to be harassed about not needing it or just driving them for an image. I really resent that mentality.
I couldn t care less what people buy or what they do with it, I d like for others to give me the same courtesy.

It's funny that Mazda says this is the more exciting alternative to Hyundai Kona. I got a Kona and it's got 208hp, do 0-60 in 7. 8 seconds, and easily do burn-outs if you disable the traction control. All this while having 3 times the range of the Mazda. Seriously, if Mazda doesn't step up the game, I think they're going to struggle to survive.

I am absolutely baffled by this car I own a 2014 Mazda 3 and a 2017 Chevy Bolt. Both cars are insanely good at what they do, and are both excellent value propositions. This is NOT, especially outside of southern CA. Put a set of snow tires on this and drop it into the Midwest in January, and you ll be lucky to eek 60 miles out of a full charge.

It s almost as if they decided to do everything wrong on purpose this could be genius marketing tactic in a weird way if they meant to do it this way but think about the free marketing they ll get for people being outraged by the car. They ll receive lots of feedback and exposure and may have a really good EV package in the future maybe

Designing a car to work for both ICE/hybrid and all electric drivetrains is a bad idea. they ended up with free space in the wrong places. too much open space under the hood where the engine would've been, not enough space for batteries. result: a crappy electric vehicle that no one should buy.

A long time ago I owned an MX-6 and have happy memories of the MX-5 I'm very sad that my beloved MX moniker has been applied to this very slow not sporty crossover. This earns a CX or maybe they should invent an EX if they want to differentiate the electric side but this is just sad.

Yeah this car is weird af and not all that practical. However, they are only going to make 500 of these and they aren't that expensive. They will sell them all with a dealer mark up to hardcore Mazda fans and they will be beta test these for them. It would be a neat second or third car.
