Check out Robert's YouTube channel here: The Trabant was built by Communists in East Germany from the 1960s until the late 1980s. They're rare in the United States - but I had the chance to drive one. Here are my thoughts

The Trabant and the East. 2 inseparable brothers. Only the Trabant has survived in the form of a relatively inexpensive piece of contemporary history. History that you can touch. History that you can put in the garage. And if you want, you get in and drive with 26 hp under the butt through the country. And with a little luck you can feel this tiny piece of freedom that could mean a Trabi - if you had one. Probably the Trabi is the most long-lived part of the history of the separation between East and West. You can buy one today. You can touch him. You can feel the breath of world history. At a simple car from East Germany. The video is pretty cool and I am amazed that there is Trabis in the United States. Today the things are collector's items. In the late 1980s, we could not stand the Trabants anymore. Insane.

Another Trabbi story. soldiers arriving in Berlin got a bus tour of East Berlin before being assigned to their units. While driving along a long, straight road completely lined with parked Trabbis. with the only difference being their somewhat pastel very faded colors. the sergeant giving the tour said can you imagine trying to find your car after you've been out drinking?

It was the first car I ever owned so I guess I am a bit sentimental. I loved it. Even though the heating was always on couldn't turn it off. Aside of that it was a fun car, the most expensive part maybe set me back a fiver. But I had a good stereo in it prob 10x more valuable then the car, and then off to cruising the city. Never let me down.

I was stationed in Berlin when the wall came down. Every now and then you'd see a soldier who owned a Trabbi. usually bought for pocket change. I remember a story in the Army Times with a big picture of a Trabbi in a dumpster. I guess it stopped running and the owner got a few buddies to help him get rid of it.

Many people already proved that you can go around the world with this car, it can take any punishment and you can repair everything pretty much by yourself if you're not a complete idiot. This car is so legendary it even has its own cult and many wouldn't trade it for a Ferrari, trust me.

To be fair, capitalists have made some pretty awful cars too. Ford Escort, Focus, Tempo, Pinto, Fairmont, Fiesta, Chevrolet Vega, Chevette, Corsica, Impala (early 2000s, Malibus (early 2000s, and everything made by Chrysler since 1973, except Dodge Caravan, and Jeep Wrangler.

I found this video because I am trying to find out what a Jalopy is. Over heard that word used all my life. I thought maybe there was a car called a Jalopy since I usually hear the word in reference with cars or broken down auotos. If anybody has any ideas, let me know

The weirdest thing about Trabant is. You had to wait more then a year to get it. In communism you did not produce and tried to sell. You asked who wants it and then you produced it, kinda like the crowd funding today. the communists were ahead after all. :)

What's up with the constant Communism bashing, I thought I was watching interesting tidbits about cars. Economical situation, Ressource constraints matter when looking at this car. I could have done with less dogma.

This one should be a must see video before any election, especially to millennial voters who are bringing back failed economic theories this car is how your damn life will look like a few years after the election
