The BMW Isetta Is the Strangest BMW of All Time

DAVID AT AUTOMOBILI LIMITED Of all the cars BMW has ever made, the BMW Isetta is the most ridiculous -- and the most unique. This video shows exactly why the Isetta is so crazy. Dennis Peterson: It is a shame that you had an Isetta in very poor condition. There is not a problem on hills. If you shift it properly, it will go just fine and keep up with traffic (up to 55mph. I have had three of these, first one new in 1957, and currently own one. My wife and I took a road trip from LA to Missouri, and also to southern Arizona. As to room, my wife, my father and I drove from Bakersfield to Downey in it. That included luggage. The lever opposite the turn signal is the dip switch.

If it was made of aluminum, and had a modern electric battery and motor, it would be a pretty neat around town car. You wouldn't want to go over 45 MPH in it because of the short wheelbase, but it would be quiet, reliable, and able to climb any hill.

That Isetta is not in the greatest condition. The engine badly needs servicing or maybe even a rebuild and probably a new clutch. The streering is worn out. The wiper motor needs re-lubing. Why would you take it for a test drive on such a busy road?

Tell the truth, - you were not in first gear on that hill, were you. I know, you had to add a little drama, right? The Isetta has the same transmission ratios as the R-25 motorcycle, and first gear in the 25 is a stump puller.

You may laugh at a bubble car, but cars like these gave the European working man the opportunity, after the war, to own a car in stead of a motorcycle. Families went on holiday with these cars, even vacations abroad

I'd love to see a bearded, 250 pound 6 foot gorilla drive around in that 'fridge'. I'll have to climb in sometime, have someone film it. Also, the choke. It has a choke. Ah. Good times.

you have windows that open, and you have a heating system. thats all you need. why is everyone so obsessed with climate control, AC, heated seats and other luxury stuff? :)

A little history lesson pre World War Two bmw was making cheap small cars. Post World War Two Germany was impoverished and lay in ruins the isetta was all they could afford.
