I was working for Toyota when this car came out. In its day it was a good car, but the Toyota Crown had the same engine as well as a V12 and I feel was better. In New Zealand, we had a much larger Japanese car market than the USA, cars the USA would have never seen. we also had the Nissan's with there V8s at the same time. Doug do your homework, sometimes well most times your don't know enough to entertain the rest of the world, who had much more then you did. others your videos are ok.

My friend Doug, i understand and approved that some europeans cars from late '80s-early '90s was not so reliable. But in my situation, i'm in love with the first generation of the LS. For myself, i'm the owner of an pristine condition Mercedes-Benz 300se 1988 ( know as the w126 for the enthusiast ) and it's clearly one of the nicest, coolest, comfortable car i ever owned and the maintenance are so easy to do, plus it's not that expensive. Sure you have to know basics in mechanics and be comfy with the maintenance, but this car. yeah it's not sporty at all, but DAMN So precise, smooth, quiet and well build, it's like a brand new car but from 31 years ago. I'm the 3rd owner, the one before was the owner of the building where i lived in Montreal, Canada. So in love with this car, i have a couples things to do but nothings for the mechanics. car from this era was fantastic my friend.

I watch these reviews because nobody else really does what Doug does. Doug found a niche and I get to learn about vehicles I'd never see in person. I like the concept. That said, I find Doug to be condescending and narcissistic. The comments he assigns to automotive engineers and designers make them sound like apathetic buffoons. As for the Doug score, I pass every time. Naming it after himself is somewhat conceited and the standards he applies are impractical. It would be more meaningful to compare a vehicle against others of the same era and those in the same class. To viewers I ask why does it matter to you that Doug wears two shirts? Does anything he does warrant crude comments about his personal life?

When you said automatic seatbelt height adjusters I thought they somehow sensed your height from the angle of the seatbelt or something and adjusted themselves, and then you changed shot to a shot of the switch. And why are you comparing its features to the new LS? You may as well do a video comparing a 1999 Corolla to a 2019 Rolls Royce. Yeah the Corolla doesn't have the starry night sky displayed in the headliner, so it loses points for thatThis video is about the old LS. You already showed us the features of the new LS in the video about. The new LS.

I worked for a company that did customer satisfaction surveys for Mercedes when this car dropped. Parked next to an S Class Mercedes you could tell who Toyota looked at. Mercedes customers were taking notice, both in terms of reliability and costs. Side note, as an Infiniti driver Ive always considered it the Japanese BMW. As for Genesis, i think their misstep was not simply starting with Genesis as its own brand as opposed to a Hyundai model.

I remember going in the Toyota show room back then, and ask THE OWNER, when r u getting the Lexus. He didn't even know what that is and dismissed me completely I was 16 HE DIDN'T KNOW HIS BRAND. But he makes the money hihihihiiiii. He should be ashamed. Because of him i never expected much of Lexus. The very first LS400 in front of the Brickes was far most the most beautiful LS400. But i think i am the only one that still remember that picture.

I was a proud owner of one of the first ones. Paid 55k for it. And it was worth it. This car will easily reach 150mph if you're not checking the odometer and not feel it. BTW, under normal acceleration, the car is just smooth. But if the ECT button is pushed, it will become a monster. Brake, gas and steering fluids flow faster. Also on a side note, this car has built in oil sprinklers in the engine so it doesn't damage the motor in cold starts.

On the gauge cluster: I was working at GM Design staff and we got a hold of one of these when it came out. The cluster blew everyones mind. We couldn't believe how good it was. The new Lumina still used a rectangular speedometer. On the odometer: Chrysler had just been busted for odometer tampering. Digital gauges had been around for 5 years and were not known for reliability. Hence I think Toyota was playing it safe.

Theres the 1st Gen Acura Legend which came out in 86. Owned a clean 1989 sedan model in the early 2000s. Was not only loaded with options for it's time but was a fun car to drive. Being my first car I drove it like it was a race car it wasnt an NSX but prepared to most the cars on the road in 04 it would usually take them. Never drove an LS400 but did own a 96 SC400.
